Sawtell Scorpions Celebrate 50 Years of the Round Ball

September 4th, 2018

While most football teams are concentrating on finals and end of season festivities, it’s all hands to the pumps at the Sawtell Scorpions as they prepare to celebrate their 50th birthday.  With the theme for the evenings celebrations planned around “The Past -The Present – The Future” It will be a unique opportunity to have some fun and catch up with old and new friends.

Club President Adrian Blythe said the club has had a colorful history. Way back in 1968 a handful of local football enthusiasts met to form the Sawtell and District Soccer Club. Minutes from that inaugural meeting show that the “Annual registration fee be $1 or 10 cents per week until paid out” and that “The club purchases a number of balls to the value of $10.”

Since those halcyon days the club has been through good times and bad times but nowadays they proudly boast being the biggest club in the North Coast Football region, and one of the biggest clubs in rural Australia, with over 500 registered players turning out to put the boot in every week.

Club stalwart Helen Urquhart has spent the past three months trawling thorough thousands of old photos, match programs, committee minutes and untold documents containing the history of the Club.

All this history will be on display on Sunday 30th September at the Sawtell RSL Club along with a two-course meal, guest speakers, entertainment and a band. The club still has tickets available but they are selling fast. The Scorpions are still very keen to hear from anyone who has been involved with the club over the past 50 years, especially past players, club officials and supporters.

Mrs Urquhart went on to say, “A big night is expected with players coming from interstate and even some from overseas.  With three ex-international players in our ranks it is sure to be a night like no other.

Anyone wanting to buy tickets will need to phone the club on 0411582513.
