Keeping up with the MiniRoos

#20: Double the Games – Double the FUN with Mayfield United JSFC & Kahibah FC!

December 2nd, 2019

There were plenty of excited young MiniRoos last Saturday as we welcomed them to McDonald Jones Stadium to watch what would be two, action packed games of football. This week we were lucky enough to be joined by 32 young stars from Mayfield United JSFC and Kahibah FC.

The day started with Kahibah FC getting the opportunity to walk out some of the best female football talent in the country, being mascots for Canberra United. Our friends from Mayfield were a guard of honour, waving flags and welcoming both the Newcastle Jets and Canberra United to the field. After a jam packed first half leaving the score tied 2 all, our keen MiniRoos took to the field to play their own small sided games. Goals and smiles flowed for the players as parents and coaches gleamed from the stands as they watched their children play on the incredible pitch of McDonald Jones Stadium. The second half saw Canberra United edge out in front to seal a 3-2 Victory, however fans were not discouraged as the night wasn’t over!

Still on the move and buzzing with excitement, we headed back downstairs to participate in mascot and guard of honour duties for the A-League. This time Mayfield had the responsibility of walking out with Western Sydney while Kahibah were a guard of honour, getting high fives and plenty of smiles from players on their way past. A highlight from one of our young Kahibah stars was that he got to high-five Dimi Petratos – so cool!

As we returned to the stands to watch the game we knew that the Jets would have to play hard to get the advantage on a strong Western Sydney team. Squadrons from both clubs were creating a presence, singing and jumping in the stands. A competitive first half held the game to nil all at halftime. It was then again time for our MiniRoos to take the spotlight, playing more small-sided games on the field. Goals, celebrations and some fantastic demonstrations of team work impressed those watching from the stands.

The time then came for us to leave the field and return to the stands, to witness an exciting second half that saw the Jets net 2 goals, winning the game and get those ever-sought after 3 points.

A big thank you to Laura Ranger from Mayfield United JSFC and Mat Moncrieff for their assistance working with us to organise such a successful day. Big thank you to the coaches that helped us on the day, Laura and Luke (MUJSFC) and Alison and Mel (Kahibah FC).
