Congratulations to the girls on a successful weekend in the NTC Challenge with securing the top spot in the tournament which resulted in them facing the FFA ‘Select Team’ in one final test before they headed home.
The girls claimed a 2-2 draw against the FFA Select team which is an extraordinary effort! A special mention to NNSW goalkeeper Annie Grove who was named keeper of the tournament as well as named in the FFA Select team along with teammates Ashley Brodigan and Hannah Bourke.
Emerging Jets Coach Ash Wilson was ecstatic over the girls’ performance over the tournament with how they came together and played across the five days.
“The way the girls came together and played for one another was outstanding throughout the tournament. It was a great opportunity for them to compete against high quality players around the country in their age groups,” Wilson said.
When talking about the significance of the tournament Wilson said it was very important platform for the girls.
“The tournament itself was important, as it was a platform of identifying young Matildas as well as in the under 17 Australian squad. There were national youth coaches and national team coaches [Matilda’s Coach Alen Stajcic] and all of the Technical Directors from the various states watching them play.”
“On the second day the girls had a really inspiring talk from Heather Garriock and Alen Stajcic which they were motivated by. They used their motivation and drive and team spirit from it to put on a great performance in the tournament that they should be proud of,” Wilson concluded.
Emerging Jets Head Coach Ryan Campbell was very proud of the girl’s efforts across the NTC Challenge that took place at the AIS in Canberra.
“Overall the girls throughout the weekend put on a great performance every single time they went on the field. They gave 100% and represented the program with pride and honour,” Campbell said.
“There were number of good performances by individuals and the overall team, which allowed the girls to finish the tournament as overall winners.”
“It gave the coaches a good opportunity to evaluate the team and more importantly the individual players against a number of high quality players throughout the country,” Campbell concluded.
Both coaches believed that there will still need to be lots of work to be done and that the coaching staff will now aim to further develop the players to continue to give them the best chance possible to ultimately fulfil their goals as players and in representing the Matildas.
