Edgeworth Eagles Qualify For The Westfield FFA Cup Round Of 32

Edgeworth FC have joined Broadmeadow Magic and qualified to represent Northern NSW in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 for the 3rd year straight after defeating fellow NNSW PS4 NPL outfit, Maitland FC, one goal to nil at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility.

Damien Zane named an unchanged starting line up from the one which dispatched of the Lambton Jaffas in Saturday’s Round 6 clash, whilst Phil Dando three changes, including the starting of former A-League championship winner, Matt Thompson, who was forced to play in headgear due to stitches in his head.

Despite only having 2 days’ rest from their respective Round 6 clashes, both teams showed little signs of fatigue as the game ebbed and flowed from one end to the other. Edgeworth would however start to take control midway through the half and were took the deserved lead in the 28th minute when Keiran Sanders attracted four defenders in the box before cutting back to Adam Cawley who managed to slide his shot past Trott into the bottom right hand corner.

Maitland’s best chance of the half would come in the 35th minute when Edgeworth keeper, Nate Cavaliere, was adjudged to have stepped outside of his area when clearing the ball from his hands, however Matt Thompson’s powerful freekick just went over the bar.

After regrouping at half time, Maitland came out for the second half firing, creating three quick chances but were only denied the equaliser thanks to some outstanding saves from Cavaliere.

Edgeworth failed to extend their lead, leaving the door ajar for Maitland to level the match, including being reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Ayden Brice was shown a straight red after lashing out at Maitland’s James Tassel in back play.

Despite the advantage, Maitland failed to fashion a meaningful opportunity in the final minutes against an uncharacteristic Edgeworth Eagles.

In spite of the disappointing second half Damien Zane was pleased with his side’s ability to grind out the result.

“The second half was disappointing, but at the end of the day football is about winning and losing”, Zane told Bar TV Sport.

“I thought we were unlike ourselves and made basic errors”, he continued.

Zane said his side hoped to draw a big name in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32. “We want to draw a Hyundai A-League team and take it out to Edgy (sic) and introduce them to Jack McLaughlan Oval”.

The Westfield FFA Cup provides PS4 NPL Northern NSW clubs and Northern NSW Club teams the opportunity to progress to the Round of 32 and the chance to play off against Preliminary Round club-based winners from fellow states, as well as Hyundai A-League Clubs
