Female Football Week 2017

March 8th, 2017

With the continual success and growth of the women’s game across Australia, Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) is proud to announce that Female Football Week will be held again in 2017. The week will start on Wednesday 8th of March running through until Sunday the 19th of March.

Female Football Week is a national initiative which gives the football community the chance to celebrate the immense growth of the women’s game and acknowledge existing players, coaches, referees and administrators in football.

NNSWF, Member Zones and Clubs will be holding several events during Female Football Week across the State.

These events include, skill sessions for females aged between 9-13, female only Coaching and Match Official courses, Female Football Seminars and Girls only ALDI MiniRoos Gala days.

A number of Newcastle Jets Westfield W-League players will be attending events throughout Female Football Week. Liana Danaskos will be travelling to Coffs Harbour for a Girls Only skills session, Jets Captain Gema Simon and Sophie Nendovic will attend events based in Newcastle and Ashlee Brodigan will be visiting Greta-Branxton Football Club.

NNSWF’s Premier competitions will see hosting clubs in Round 2 hold a Women In Football Round that will coincide with the conclusion of Female Football Week on the weekend of the 18th and 19th March. Premier clubs will be encouraged to walk out with females that have influenced their footballing career and hold ladies days.

If you are yet to plan an activity for Female Football Week there is still time; NNSWF encourages all members of the football family to get involved! If you require any assistance in planning an activity, please contact NNSWF Female Participation Officer, Nyssa Suchanow.

Guest Speaker: Professor Phil Morgan –  The University of Newcastle

Girls face a number of barriers to participation in football at school, home and in the community. Innovative approaches are needed to engage girls and optimise their football skills, confidence and self-esteem. This presentation will highlight key findings and novel examples from a number of highly successful school- and community-based programs to improve girls’ outcomes in football. Examples will be drawn from the award-winning ‘Dads And Daughters Exercising and Empowered’ (DADEE) program and Phil’s extensive coaching experiences. The presentation will explain how damaging the ‘pinkification’ of girls can be and how this can be addressed. Evidence-based recommendations will be presented for parents, coaches, administrators and stakeholders who are interested in engaging and improving the experience of girls in football.

Professor Morgan is co-director of the University of Newcastle Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition and physical education lecturer in the School of Education. His research program is focused on the impact of school- and community- based interventions to promote physical activity and sports skills proficiency in youth. His work in teaching, research and the community has been recognised with national and international awards including 12 university teaching excellence awards and 11 research excellence awards.

Phil has a passion for promoting female physical activity and sporting opportunities.

Phil has been a lead investigator on DADEE (Dads And Daughters Exercising and Empowered), a world-first lifestyle program that is delivered in Newcastle targeting fathers as the agents of change to improve their daughters’ physical activity levels, sports skills and social-emotional wellbeing. Phil also coaches numerous junior sports teams including touch football, basketball and football. Notably, he is coach of the legendary Cooks Hills Lionesses!
