Reigning premiers Lambton will host Maitland in the opening round of the 2022 NPL Men’s NNSW competition.
Shane Pryce’s side, who were awarded the premiership last season having been top of the table when COVID-19 restrictions saw the remainder of the competition cancelled, welcome the Magpies to Arthur Edden Oval on Friday 4 March.
The match will be a stand-alone fixture to open the season, kicking off at 7pm, with reserve grade and under-18s to be played the following day.
Maitland were second, one point behind Lambton, when the 2021 season was halted. The Magpies were also due to play the Jaffas in the final regular season round.
Elsewhere, Newcastle Olympic will welcome Weston Workers FC to Darling Street Oval for a late Saturday afternoon kick-off on 5 March, while Michael Bridges’ Edgeworth host Valentine FC at Jack McLaughlan Oval on Saturday night.
Cooks Hill United will make their debut in the top tier when they host Adamstown Rosebud at No.2 Sportsground on Sunday 6 March, while Damian Zane’s new-look Broadmeadow Magic travel to Macquarie Field to take on Lake Macquarie City.
Charlestown Azzurri have the first bye of the season.
Northern NSW Football General Manager Football Operations Liam Bentley said the 2022 NPL Men’s NNSW competition promised to be thrilling.
“Obviously the way the 2021 season ended was disappointing. But we’re so excited for 2022,” Bentley said.
“We have the introduction of an 11th team with Cooks Hill United joining the competition this season which is much deserved for them.
“With an extra team we get a longer season and more matches for fans to enjoy which is always a good thing.
“There are some outstanding matches in the opening round. We can’t wait for kick-off and we wish the 11 teams all the best for 2022.”
NNSWF Premier Competitions will also contain a number of feature rounds in 2022 including Respect Round (18-19 June) and Heritage Round (6-7 August) as well as the commemoration of ANZAC Day (23-25 April) and celebration of Female Football Week (6-15 May) and NAIDOC Week (4-10 July).
