This week, Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility played host to 68 of Northern NSW Football’s (NNSWF) finest Under 13 and 14 players at the annual Telstra Boys Identification (ID) Camp.
An essential component to NNSWF’s Talented Player Pathway, the Telstra Boys ID Camp assists to monitor talented players’ progress and identify players for possible selection into NNSWF representative teams including the upcoming FFA National Youth Championships (NYC) to be held in Coffs Harbour in late September.
From 2018 NNSWF will have one team in each age group at the NYC; these teams will be comprised of both Talent Support Program (TSP) players and also boys from the Country Zones, consequently, there were players from all NNSWF Zones as well as players from the National Premier League (NPL) NNSW clubs in attendance at the camp.
Overseen by NNSWF Technical Director Michael Browne and NNSWF Technical Advisor Leo Bertos the Telstra Boys ID Camp puts young players through their paces over the three days.
The camp consisted of a variety of coaching sessions, small sided games and concluded with an 11 v 11 game.
NNSWF Technical Director Michael Browne, emphasises that such camps focus on both identifying individual players and also on selecting the squad that will represent NNSW.
“When selecting the squad it is important to not only select players who may be effective now but also players who might have the potential to develop into promising players over the next few years,” Browne said.
The next Telstra Boys ID Camp is scheduled for the July school holidays Monday 9 until Wednesday 12 July. This will be the final camp where the squad will be determined for the September FFA National Youth Championships for Boys.
