Premier Youth players take part in the 2020 session.

Premier Youth Players invited to experience the other side of the whistle

January 6th, 2021

Northern NSW Football will host an exclusive half-day Match Official Education Session to enable Premier Youth players to have a better understanding of the Laws of the Game and help improve as footballers.

The 2021 Education Session will be held at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on the morning of Thursday, 21 January and will be followed by a Level 4 Referee Course in the afternoon.

More than 40 young players from the three NNSWF Premier Competitions attended the inaugural event at the start of last year, with the vast majority staying to complete the Level 4 Referee Course to become Match Officials.

Northern NSW Football Head of Football Development Peter Haynes said the session was a unique and effective way for budding professional players to get an insight into the challenges facing match officials and the importance of maintaining respectful working relationships between players and officials.

“As a player, we often forget how difficult a job match officials have when we are in the heat of a match,” Haynes said.

“In addition to a better understanding of the laws and challenges of officiating, the session will provide details on the benefits of becoming a match official and the pathway to officiating elite football.

“The day is also a great opportunity for young players to take advantage of the New Referee Starter Pack which is designed to help get young match officials out on the park.”

There is no cost for youth players to attend the morning Education Session. For those wanting to become a match official, they can take advantage of the New Referee Starter Pack for $140 which includes:

  • Level 4 Referee Course
  • Laws of the Game book
  • Whistle
  • Flag
  • Set of Red and Yellow Cards
  • Notebook

Upon passing the course and registering as a match official on PlayFootball with NNSWF or one of its member zones, each new referee will receive:

  • Referee Shirt (Black)
  • Referee Shorts (Black)
  • Referee Socks (Black)
  • Full match official registration fee for first season

Spaces are limited and participants must register here prior to 14 January 2021 using their FFA Number.

For those who opt to become a Match Official an invoice will be sent and payment required prior to the day.

Players who choose to become a match official must complete the FFA Laws of the Game course and exam online prior to the day and bring a printed copy of their Statement of Completion Certificate to the session.
