Mid North Coast and NNSWF Newcastle SAP win the First Touch Football Supplies State SAP Championships

An outstanding championship performance has seen the 11 Years Northern NSW (NNSW) Newcastle SAP squad and the 12 Years Mid North Coast squad take home the winning title of the First Touch Football Supplies (FTFS) State SAP Championships.

The three (3) day tournament was played over the long weekend at the multi-million dollar upgraded C.ex International Stadium, Coffs Harbour.

With the winning teams based off points, the final day of matches had the crowds on edge as tournament leaders played off for top position on the ladder.

Leading the table from the previous day, the 12 Years Mid North Coast team kicked off the first game, championing the NNSWF Select SAP squad 6 nil.

The squad remained undeterred by its competition playing the final match of the day, facing off against Macquarie with a winning result of 3 nil.

An extremely tight game played between 11 Years NNSWF Select SAP and NNSWF Newcastle SAP saw the latter secure a victory of 1 nil.

Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) Technical Advisor, Leo Bertos stressed the importance of providing young, talented players the opportunity to attend this tournament and similar events.

“It is vital for the development of NNSW’s talented football players to be afforded opportunities to compete at events such as the First Touch Football Supplies State SAP Championships, and we need to think of more ways we can increase these opportunities,”

“The NNSWF technical group and I found it very interesting to see how players performed during the tournament while managing an added pressure that the usual SAP environment does not have”,

“I witnessed a lot of talented players struggle to perform at their expected level due to not being able to handle this pressure,”

“Players we identified performed no matter the situation and this is a good characteristic of top-level players we look out for,” Bertos said.NNSWF Senior Officer – Match Official Administration and Development, Brad Carlin commended the performance of the selected referees over the tournament, who were undertaking the Talented Official Program (TOP) Camp.

Carlin along with his assessors, named Layton Farley, from NNSWF Referees as the 11 Years Match Official Champion and Joseph Morris, from NNSWF as the 12 Years Match Official Champion.

Coffs Harbour hosts Northern NSW’s emerging youth football talent

Day One of the First Touch Football Supplies (FTFS) State SAP Championships begins with the most talented 11 and 12 years boys squads competing at the C.ex International Stadium, Coffs Harbour.

Northern NSW Football’s (NNSWF) technical group will be keeping a watchful eye on the stand out performances over the weekend to identify players for future opportunities including the upcoming National Championships or the Newcastle Jets Academy teams.

NNSWF Technical Advisor, Leo Bertos says the tournament is off to a good start with a lot of close competition between teams but he would like to see players taking some more risk to showcase their skills.

“This is the biggest weakness of football in Australia, and I would encourage players to express themselves and display their individual and creative skills,” Bertos said.

The standout performances of the day that caught the interest of the technical group included the 12 Years match between NNSWF Select SAP v Macquarie and the 11 Years Emerging Jets v 12 Years Macquarie.

“These teams played very well technically with equally controlled possession in tight affairs.”

Overall Bertos was pleased to see the style of play implemented by the majority of the teams with controlling the ball and playing good football.

The next two days of competition will prove interesting with more talent to be watched as the weekend unravels.

Day two (2) of the tournament commences Sunday 9 June, with first kick off at 8:30am.

Northern NSW’s most talented 11 and 12-year-old male footballers are set to compete in the annual First Touch Football Supplies (FTFS) State SAP Championships in Coffs Harbour.

FTFS are proud to be announced as the new naming rights sponsor for the prestigious event which will be held on Saturday 8th, Sunday 9th and Monday 10th over the June long weekend.

The competition will take place at the newly renovated C.ex International Stadium currently undergoing a $13-million upgrade, where fifteen (15) teams made up from NNSWF’s seven (7) Member Zones will compete for the winning title.

NNSWF Head of Football Development Peter Haynes said the competition is vital in underpinning the development of young players through the implementation of Licensed Skill Acquisition Programs (SAP’s).

“These championships also provide us with the opportunity to identify potential players for future representative squads for Northern NSW Football at upcoming National Championships as well as monitor potential players for future Newcastle Emerging Jets Academy teams,” Haynes said.

NNSWF Technical Advisor Leo Bertos, who will be monitoring the players, is looking forward to witnessing the best players in the region compete across the three-day competition at the fantastic new stadium in Coffs Harbour.

“This is a fantastic weekend of football for both players and spectators involved competing in a different environment to the SAP gala days and weekend games, where players and teams are playing for points, ultimately to try to be the best team in the NNSWF region,” Bertos said.

“I would like to wish everyone the best of luck and I am confident we will see some great matches,” Leo concluded.
