On the weekend, Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility (LMRFF) and Macquarie Field hosted Round 1 of the Westfield FFA Cup Southern Pool for Northern NSW.
The magic of the cup brought together 20 games in total, with 120 goals scored and 5 penalty shoot outs across the two days.
Saturday got underway with a local derby between Kotara South FC and Garden Suburb FC, with Kotara South securing the win in the tough contest 4 goals to 3.
The morning also revealed the first major upset with the newly formed Zone League team, Hamilton Azzurri defeating former Zone Premier League team Barnsley United 3 goals to 2.
Big winners on day one included Wallsend FC, Hunter Simba FC and Thornton Redbacks FC, whilst Muswellbrook FC, Mayfield United Senior FC, Beresfield FC also prevailed in tight contests.
At Macquarie Field, Raymond Terrace SC upset their more fancied opponents Westlakes Wildcats 4 – 1. Meanwhile, NEWFM 1st Division clubs South Cardiff FC and Cessnock City FC could not be separated at full time, resulting in South Cardiff defeating Cessnock in a penalty shootout.
The last game saw Lake Macquarie City FC put on a dominant display at their home ground to defeat Cardiff City FC, 8 goals to 1.
Day two of the Westfield FFA Cup started with a drama filled morning for Cooks Hills United FC and Dudley Redhead United Senior FC.
Dudley put on a strong performance securing the lead just prior to full time with a curling shot to the top corner by Sam Lavis before NEWFM club Cooks Hill’s Emerson Augey equalised seconds later. Dudley then triumphed in a penalty shoot-out.
This was the first of four penalty shoot outs on the day, with other winners being, West Wallsend SFC, Medowie FC and Beresfield United SFC.
Other winners from matches on day two at LMRFF included New Lambton FC, Morrisset United FC and Kahibah FC.
At Macquarie Field NEWFM 1st Division clubs, Singleton FC and Belmont Swansea United FC were the big winners of the day.
