2024 Champion of Champions Day Five: Battle for finals heats up amongst rain, hail and shine

Coffs Coast Synthetics saw all four seasons on Saturday as it showcased another day of the best youth community football teams from across NNSWF’s seven member zones challenging for the title of the Champion of Champions.

There were 28 matches contested during the second day of the girls tournament, with teams battling for improvement and results.

The teams will now all play one last pool game on Sunday morning ahead of finals before the champions are crowned and a thrilling week of football comes to a close. The under-12s will move straight to semi-finals on Sunday before the play-off 

Under-12s Girls:

Northern Storm kicked off their second day of the tournament with a bang after a dominant 7-0 win over Tumbulgum Rangers. Valla Parsons netted a hat-trick and two goals from Saffi Wendt contributed to Storm’s second win of their campaign.

Port Saints Rabbits also kept their winning streak alive after a 2-0 win over Coffs Coast Tigers, with goals from Kayla Button and Isa Balkin.

Tumbulgum turned things around in the afternoon to secure their first win of the tournament after a 3-0 victory over Coffs City with goals from Cloe Wise and Grace Wise.

Northern Storm continued their undefeated run with a 4-0 victory over Port Saints Rabbits.

All four of the under-12s teams will play-off in the semi-finals on Sunday for a spot in the grand final. Coffs City will take on Northern Storm, while the Rabbits will face Tumbulgum.

Under-13s Girls:

Northern Storm continued their undefeated streak into the second day of competition after a 1-0 win over Kahibah FC with the match winner from Reef Winkler.

Alstonville started the day with a 2-0 win against Tilligerry United, with goals from Georgia Wilks and Lara Regan. Bellingen FC went down 2-0 to Lismore Thistles.

Bellingen bounced back to defeat Tilligerry 3-0 with goals from Tilda Duerinckx, Ruby Dowling and Ayla Devine.

Port United was victorious over Lismore after a tight tussle for the full 40 minutes. Pippa Wade went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and sliced the ball into the back of the net to secure the 1-0 win for her side.

Kahibah went down to Alstonville 3-0 after Emelia Lovejoy netted a double and Zali Nott scored in the final minutes of the game.

Lismore was unable to end Northern Storm's hot streak as they went down 3-1 in their final match of the day.

Kahibah picked up their second win of their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Bellingen. Cally Drain scored the match-winner early in the first half.

Port United secured a 1-0 win against Tilligerry as Ruby Holmes hit the back of the net just before half-time to round out the day for the division. 

Under-14s Girls:

Boambee FC secured their first win of the campaign after a 2-0 win over North United after Olivia Purnell scored twice.

Stockton Sharks surged to the top of the table after they defeated Woolgoolga FC 3-1. The score was locked up at 1-1 until the final minutes of the match when Kaitlin Smith and Xanthe Shields each hit the back of the net to seal the win.

Coffs City United and Port United had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Port United took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break after Millahni Moore hit the back of the net but Coffs City got themselves back into the contest and equalised through Willow Budd early in the second half to secure themselves a point from the match.

Stockton remained undefeated after they drew 2-2 with second-placed Boambee in a tight tussle.

As the rain poured down, North United defeated Port United 2-0 with two first-half goals from Kenlyn Thraves and Alyssa Hammond.

Northern Storm secured their first win of the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Coffs City to wrap up the under-14s division for the day. 

Under-15/16s Girls:

Garden Suburb and Sawtell FC secured their first point of the tournament after they settled for a toughly fought 1-1 draw. Imogen Bilsborough opened the scoring in the first minutes of the game for Sawtell to give her side the lead into the half-time break. But a late goal for Garden Suburb from Rachel Watson saw the final score locked at 1-1.

Sawtell was then forced to share the points again after a 0-0 draw with Bellingen FC after neither side could find the back of the net. Garden Suburb also picked up another draw after an intense battle against Cooks Hill United to earn a 1-1 result.

Byron Bay opened their account for the day with a gritty 1-0 win over Maitland JFC after Alice Woods’ goal early in the second half did enough to get them over the line.

The sides could not be separated in the matches after lunch with three draws contested.

Cooks Hill and Sawtell settled for a 0-0 draw, while Garden Suburb and Bellingen also struggled to find the back of the net and the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 at full-time.

Maitland and Port United were forced to share the points after a dramatic 1-1 draw. The teams went into the half-time break locked up 0-0 before Harmony Clark looked to score the winner for Port United late in the game. But in the dying minutes of the match Maitland struck back through Addison McQueen to clinch a point for her side.

In the final time slot of the day, in the torrential rain Byron Bay defeated Port United 2-0 while Cooks Hill clinched a 1-0 win over Bellingen.
