Wests APIA v Broadmeadow Magic
Lambert Park, Saturday 3pm
Broadmeadow Magic coach Jim Cresnar believes his side has adapted to the intensity of the Australian Championship as they prepare for a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Wests APIA at Lambert Park on Saturday afternoon.
Magic have made an impressive start to their campaign, recording two wins, a draw and a bonus point across the opening three rounds. Their only stalemate came in a scoreless opening-round encounter against this weekend's opponents.
With just one point separating the sides, Saturday presents an opportunity for Broadmeadow to strengthen its position at the top of the table, but Cresnar believes his side has continued to improve as the competition has progressed.
"I think we've learned a lot from the first game to the last game. We've been a bit more aggressive in terms of attacking," Cresnar said.
"Defensively, we've been working as well, so I think our combinations are starting to get better and we're getting used to the level of intensity as well.
"Our key difference compared to the first game is our ability to adapt to the higher level of intensity."
Despite the significance of the fixture, Cresnar is refusing to place any additional pressure on his players, preferring to approach Saturday's encounter like any other game.
"I don't see it as a top-of-the-table clash. I treat it like any other game," Cresnar said.
"It's important that we get a good result and obviously that will carry us through going forward, but the reality is we're just happy to be in the Australian Championship."
But Broadmeadow's improvement has been matched by an APIA side that will enter the contest full of confidence after an impressive comeback victory in round three.
APIA overturned a 2-1 deficit to defeat Avondale FC 5-2, further highlighting the attacking threat they will pose on home soil.
With APIA posing a different challenge, Magic have been working to prepare for the way their opponents approach the game.
"We've had a pretty detailed analysis of them [Wests APIA] on Tuesday night. They like to do a lot of combination play and overload certain areas, so we worked on that a lot," Cresnar said.
"They're a very good team. The bottom line is they're well-structured and disciplined and it's going to be a battle in terms of that."
The challenge will be further complicated by APIA's home-ground advantage and the synthetic surface at Lambert Park, with Cresnar hoping his side's preparation will help them adjust to the conditions.
"They're going to be eager to win obviously being at their home ground. They are playing on synthetic as well, so the surface will make a huge difference," Cresnar said.
"I believe they're also going to wet the ground as well, so it will make it a bit trickier, hence why we're training at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility because we're trying to assimilate to what the potential facility will be as well."
Magic's performances throughout the opening rounds have attracted attention beyond northern NSW, putting both the club and the region's football community in the national spotlight.
While Cresnar is pleased with the recognition, he insists it has not translated into any additional pressure on his squad, who remain focused on the challenge immediately in front of them.
"I think that we've turned some heads which is good for Magic and the wider football community, but I don't feel so [that it's added any extra pressure]," Cresnar said.
"The players are just taking it game by game rather than worrying about where we are in terms of the table.
"They really focus on the game at hand and I'm sure if we get a good result there, we'll be in a very strong position."
After being unable to separate the sides in round one, Magic will be eager to show how far they've come and claim a valuable result that could strengthen their position at the top of the standings.
