As the Emerging Socceroos Championships entered its third day, marking the final round of group stage matches, the competition continued to showcase an impressive level of talent across all teams.
Northern NSW Football finished the day with one win and one loss.
Under-15s
NNSWF under-15s battled hard but ultimately went down 4-1 to Football NSW Sky in their final group match.
They started with high energy, pressing forward repeatedly and the early pressure paid off in the fourth minute.
As Marlon Ramirez drove into the 18-yard box, he was brought down by a Football NSW Sky defender, earning NNSWF a penalty.
Captain Thomas Donnelly stepped up and calmly converted from the spot.
Football NSW Sky pushed for an equaliser, but a strong defensive presence from goalkeeper Balyn Mottley, along with a crucial clearance from Zac Wolfenden, kept them at bay.
But Football NSW Sky broke through in the 19th and 27th minutes to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.
NNSWF entered the second half determined to respond, but another goal from Football NSW Sky in the 42nd minute made the task more difficult.
A resilient defensive effort across the pitch continued to limit further chances despite sustained pressure.
Raman Dalaf came close to pulling one back in the 53rd minute, but his effort narrowly missed, drifting past the post and over the byline.
In a last-ditch effort, Football NSW Sky added a fourth goal in the dying moments, sealing a 4-1 result.
The under-15s finished third in their group and will face Tasmania in the play-off quarter-final at 9am on Wednesday 22 April.
Under-16s
The under-16s made it three from three when they defeated Football NSW Sky 3-0 in their final group stage match.
They entered the game determined to go undefeated in the group stage and that intent was evident from the first whistle.
Payton Wheeler produced a fantastic block in the third minute to deny the opposition.
The match began end-to-end, but as play settled, Football NSW Sky started to maintain more possession.
But it did not deter NNSWF with Levi Van Haren, Riley Atherton, and Jake Colburt all having strong attempts on goal.
The breakthrough NNSWF had been searching for came in the closing moments of the first half, when they were awarded a penalty following a Football NSW Sky handball in the box.
Jack Middleby stepped up but was denied by the goalkeeper. Drey Rhule followed in and buried the rebound past the scrambling keeper to give NNSWF a 1-0 lead.
NSW Sky began the second half strongly, but NNSWF goalkeeper Reagan Spliet and defensive pressure from Kaiden Walshe, Wheeler, Tobi Man, and Van Haren denied them any chance of an equaliser.
Zac Zigic searched for his third goal of the tournament and found it in the 38th minute after Caiden Burns cut the ball back to him unmarked in the box, where he calmly slotted it into the bottom right corner.
Both sides continued to battle throughout the second half, with each team knowing that a win would secure a place in the quarter-finals.
But Zigic’s second goal in the 54th minute put the game beyond doubt, as NNSWF ran out 3-0 winners.
The victory saw NNSWF top Group C with maximum points, without conceding a single goal.
They will now face Tasmania in the quarter-final at 10.40am on Wednesday 22 April.
NNSWF Talent Development Officer Brett Angell praised the under-16s’ consistently high standards while acknowledging valuable lessons for the under-15s following a challenging contest.
“The under-16s have been absolutely magnificent so far, and their performance again today was consistently of a very high standard,” Angell said.
“It was a solid 3-0 victory, and that sets us up well for the quarter-final. If they maintain those standards, they really can go all the way based on what we’ve seen.
“It was a tough game for the under-15s. Football NSW Sky looked like a very strong side. Overall, we probably came off second best, but there are plenty of learnings for the group in recognising the level of the opposition, and you have to give them credit.
“They were a very good unit and made it difficult for us. We spent too much time defending, but I thought the goalkeeper [Balyn Mottley] made a number of important saves that helped keep the score down.
“We go again tomorrow and I wish both teams the best of luck.”
