For Barnsley FC, building a strong future starts with giving young players the opportunity to take the next step.
The club’s under-17s squad has played a key role in the 2026 season, with several young players earning opportunities to train and compete alongside the senior squads in Zone League football.
With six under-17s players stepping up into first and reserve grades throughout the season, Barnsley FC is showing its commitment to creating a pathway for local players to progress through the club’s ranks.
Team Operations Coordinator Josh Boote said the opportunity for the younger players to be involved at senior level has been a rewarding part of the season.
“We have had six boys from the under-17s come up and play Zone League, with one making his debut in goals in first grade. We have also had one even scoring a goal in third grade,” Boote said.
For Barnsley FC head coach Jacob Avellis, the connection between the junior and senior squads has been a major focus as the club looks to build a strong foundation for years to come.
“The under-17s have been a part of our season all season. We support them, they support us,” Avellis said.
“They are all keen to get up in Zone League and be a part of the squad. The potential within those teams is unreal.”
That pathway was highlighted recently when young midfielder Oliver Cousin was handed the reserve grade captain’s armband in the closing stages of a match. A moment the club described as a reward for his commitment, maturity and hard work.
The milestone represented more than just a personal achievement for Oliver, with Barnsley FC recognising it as another example of the opportunities available for young players within the club.
As Barnsley FC continues to strengthen its connection between junior and senior football, Avellis believes the club’s community spirit will play an important role in its future success.
“We have got a massive amount of support throughout the whole community. Barnsley is unreal from juniors all the way up to seniors,” Avellis said.
“This year we are hoping to set the foundation for the next few years to come.”
With a focus on developing players, creating opportunities and keeping local talent within the club, Barnsley FC is building more than just teams, it is building a future pathway for the next generation of footballers.
