Copa Toreros Prima Vera Tournament wraps up for three northern NSW teams

The prestigious Copa Toreros Prima Vera Tournament came to a close in Japan on Monday after three hard-fought days of competition.

Three Northern NSW Football representative teams travelled to play at Tokino Sumika Usagijima Ground in Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture, near the base of Mount Fuji.

Set against a picturesque backdrop, an under-12 boys metro team, under-12 boys regional team and under-13 girls team all took to the field, gaining valuable experience against international opposition in a tournament to remember.

The event featured 30 teams including several leading Japanese youth academies such as Yokohama F.Marinos, Yokohama FC, Urawa Red Diamonds, Kashima Antlers, Kashiwa Reysol and RB Omiya Ardija.

The tour marked a significant milestone for NNSWF, fielding a dedicated regional team at an international tournament for the first time. It also signalled another important step forward, with a NNSWF girls team competing in Japan for the first time.

As the first NNSWF girls squad to compete in Japan, the under-13s showcased their bravery throughout the tournament, with the side earning praise from leading Japanese coaches for their determination across all matches.

While players gained invaluable experience on the field, the cultural experience off the field was just as impactful.

Players from across northern NSW embraced the culture and created lasting memories with their opposition.

NNSWF Regional Talent Development Officer Larry Budgen was grateful for the opportunity to showcase northern NSW talent on the international stage.

“It was a world class tournament for our squads to take part in and I’m incredibly proud of the efforts from all the players,” Budgen said.

“The experience the players gained on and off the field is something they will remember forever.

“There was a really emotional moment after one match when a Japanese parent was brought to tears seeing the players embrace. It’s moments like this that show how much football can bring people together.

“It was a fantastic experience overall and we’re grateful for the amazing opportunity.”
