Match of the Round
Kahibah FC 2-0 Belmont Swansea United
A Curtis Baggs goal in the 85th minute secured a 2-0 victory for Kahibah over Belmont Swansea United at Kahibah Oval on Sunday.
The precious three points resulted in Kahibah leapfrogging BelSwans into fourth position as the table heats up in HIT106.9 Northern League One.
The victory puts Kahibah into touching distance of the front runners one point behind South Cardiff, two points behind Singleton and four points behind league leaders Toronto Awaba.
Kahibah coach Mat Moncrieff was delighted with the performances across both grades.
"In all my years at Kahibah that's as convincing as we have been against BelSwans in both grades," Moncrieff said.
"Never conceded a goal all day and should have won by more in both grades so a good day out for the club.
"Our spy went and watched them play last week and we came up with a game plan that to be honest worked perfectly and they really didn't threaten us much all game.
"Our boys will be in neck braces for the rest of the week after dealing with all their long ball. It's a shame they played that way as our pitch is as good and big as anyone's in the comp at the moment.
"They are a good squad of players playing some very ugly football when I don't think they really need to.
"We competed better across the park today our defensive group were awesome.”
Matt Lee, Jake Kepreotes and Jenson Hunt dominated the middle of the park for Kahibah.
"Tyson Masters and Curtis Baggs both scored great goals, we also played with 10 men for 20 minutes,” Moncrieff said.
"We were missing eight players across the two grades today and get most of them back next week so competition for spots is really hotting up.
"Hopefully we can put another similar display on next week.”
Singleton Strikers 1-2 Cessnock City Hornets
A Kyle Gillis brace sealed the points for the Cessnock City to help the Hornets fly up to the business end of the table.
Hornets coach Brad Miles provided insights from a tight clash at Howe Park on Saturday.
"We started slow, went down 1-0 after about 10 minutes after we played a poor pass in our back third which Singleton pounced on and scored," Miles said.
"Our second half was a much better effort all over the park which you need against a good team like Singleton.
"Kyle Gillis scored twice to give us a well-deserved win.
"It wasn't pretty but I'm happy with the attitude and commitment we showed in the second half which put us in a position to get the three points.”
West Wallsend SFC v Toronto Awaba FC
Match postponed due to unplayable pitch at Johnston Park caused by wet weather.
South Cardiff FC 4-0 Thornton Redbacks FC
South Cardiff took the sting out of the Thornton Redbacks with an impressive 4-0 victory at Ulinga Oval on Sunday.
The three points cement their position in third place only one point behind Singleton in second place and three points adrift of leaders Toronto Awaba.
South Cardiff's Perry Mellon provided a coach's insights from the dugout.
"Boys had a great week at training and I know Wandy [Thornton coach Gary Wand] would have Thornton ready after their round one performance," Mellon said.
"Very even first 20 minutes before Justin [Banek] neatly finished inside the box off a corner.
"A couple of crucial saves from Izaac [Terry] and desperate defending kept us in it at half-time.
"Second half we were very dominant, Justin scored with Tom Walker and Alex finishing the job off. Juma with three assists in midfield was superb.
"Looking forward to the week off with a big couple games after the bye.”
