Match of the Round
Singleton Strikers v Cessnock City Hornets
Howe Park, Saturday 2pm
Singleton Strikers head coach Jason Brewer is preparing his squad for a wet and slippery Howe Park this Saturday afternoon against Cessnock City Hornets, viewing the next few games as a defining stretch of their season.
The Strikers enter this weekend's fixture looking to back up their recent away draw with a win on home turf.
Singleton earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Dudley Redhead United last weekend, a performance that Brewer noted as a much-improved display from his side.
"It was a much-improved performance from us, especially in the midfield," Brewer said.
“The guys really put in, and I think it was a pretty fair result in the end."
While the Strikers started the campaign strongly, a dip in form has seen them collect just one win from their last five outings.
Reflecting on the midway point of the season, Brewer remains optimistic about his side's ability heading into the second half of the year.
"We are still playing good football, and we haven't been far out of it; things just haven't gone our way in games," Brewer said.
"The next three matches are going to be pretty important to where we end our season.
“If we get some good results, I'm confident we can push for the top four.
“After last weekend's display, it showed we are on the way up."
Cessnock City Hornets travel to Howe Park determined to stop their inconsistent run of form and push back towards the top four.
The Hornets started the season firing near the top of the table but have since endured a difficult run of results, managing just one point from their last five fixtures.
The visitors will be particularly frustrated by their recent defensive lapses, having dropped a winning position in two consecutive 3-2 losses.
While Cessnock can find confidence in their 2-0 victory over Singleton back in round one, head coach Josh Maguire expects a vastly different challenge on a heavy away surface.
"We get a few players back from injury, which is going to be a lift, but it’s likely to be wet weather football," Maguire said.
"It’ll be tough conditions, so if we do get on, we can't muck around with too many passes in the final third.
“They are quite strong in the air, so we have to be mindful of set pieces and corners.
“It’s a game where not a lot of great football will be played in the wet, so we need to focus on the one-percenters and avoid giving away silly fouls."
Despite their recent run of results, Maguire remains confident his side can return to winning ways, noting that their overall performances have not dropped off significantly.
"It's not like we're losing three or four nil,” Maguire said.
“We're only losing by a goal, so there isn't too much to change, but obviously the results have to start coming sooner rather than later because we're into the second half of the season now.
“We are still scoring goals, but we have to tighten things up at the back so we don't need to rely on scoring four to win."
A victory at Howe Park would help Cessnock halt their recent slide down the table, validate their full-squad depth, and push them right back into the top-four conversation.
For Singleton, taking all three points would not only see them overtake their opponents but help distance themselves from the relegation spot while starting their push toward the promotion play-off positions.
Dudley Redhead United v Toronto Awaba FC
Lydon Oval, Sunday 1pm
Dudley Redhead United head coach Mark Wilson is focused on getting his side to capitalise their chances in the final third ahead of Sunday's fixture against Toronto Awaba FC at Lydon Oval.
The hosts enter the fixture determined to defend their position in the top four and recapture the form they displayed early in the campaign.
Dudley currently sits in fourth place but will be disappointed to have secured only a 1-1 draw against Singleton Strikers FC last weekend, despite leading at the interval.
Wilson felt his side did enough to claim all three points but let themselves down with their execution in the final third.
"We were up 1-0 at half-time, and we created enough chances in the second half to win the game," Wilson said.
"We just didn't execute well enough in the front third.
“We got the ball into really good areas and just couldn't finish.
“The point felt like a bit of a loss to be honest, because of what we created."
Despite dropping points in consecutive weeks, Wilson remains pleased with where the club stands at the midway point of the season, citing their loss of key players as the main reason for the minor dip in form recently.
"If you said to me at the start of the year that we would be where we are now, we would be happy with that, and we are as a club," Wilson said.
"The dip in form correlates, like a lot of clubs, with having a few out injured and a couple of guys away on leave.
“We're looking forward to getting those guys back in the next couple of weeks, and hopefully, that sets us up for a similar performance in the second half of the year."
Dudley will need to manage their squad losses again this weekend as they work through their current availability issues.
Captain Damien Cox remains sidelined for another few weeks with an injury sustained against Cessnock City Hornets.
While they defeated Toronto 2-1 in the opening round, Wilson expects another difficult encounter against a side whose ladder position does not tell the full story in his eyes.
"Toronto are a really good side and where they are sitting on the table is not reflective of the quality they've got," Wilson said.
"We beat them 2-1, but it was a tight game in the first round, so we're expecting a similar tight contest.
“We need to improve in the front third in terms of taking our chances, but they've got some dangerous guys up top too, so we need to be concentrated and switched on at the back."
Toronto Awaba FC travels to Lydon Oval with fresher legs after their round nine fixture against Lake Macquarie City FC was postponed due to the wet weather.
The Stags enter the weekend tied on points with bottom-placed South Cardiff FC and in urgent need of a result to distance themselves from the automatic relegation spot.
The visitors will look to build on the momentum of their round eight victory over Singleton to help make up for a difficult start to the season.
Securing three points on the road would not only kick-start a move up the standings for Toronto but also prove they can match it with the competition's leaders.
A win for Dudley, however, would help maintain their top-four status and extend their advantage over the surrounding chasing pack.
Lake Macquarie City FC v West Wallsend SFC
Macquarie Field, Saturday 4.30pm
Lake Macquarie City FC hosts West Wallsend SFC at Macquarie Field this Saturday afternoon, with both sides returning fresh from a weekend off due to the wet weather.
This fixture features two of the competition's most in-form teams looking to maintain their strong momentum as the season intensifies.
The game will be a major opportunity for Lake Macquarie, who enter the weekend sitting near the summit of the standings.
A victory on home soil could potentially see the Roosters climb into first place, depending on whether other results go their way.
The hosts will take huge confidence from the reverse fixture in round one, where a dominant attacking display earned them a resounding 9-2 victory over the Bluebells.
While Lake Macquarie will look to repeat that dominant performance, they will be fully aware that their opponents have transformed significantly since that opening-round meeting.
West Wallsend travels to Macquarie Field as a much more formidable unit than the side that was beaten heavily in week one.
After a slow start to the year, the Bluebells have undergone a resurgence, collecting 10 points from their last five outings to climb away from the lower end of the table.
The visitors will be highly motivated to rectify that heavy round-one defeat and prove how much their defensive structure has improved.
But they will still carry lingering frustration from their last match, a dramatic 3-2 derby loss to Wallsend FC, in which they failed to hold on to a 2-1 lead despite having a one-man advantage in the second half.
Securing three points for both clubs would help clarify their ambitions for the season.
For West Wallsend, a win would further distance them from the relegation threat and keep them within striking distance of the top four.
Meanwhile, capturing points at Lake Macquarie would help them maintain the pressure on the league leaders and sustain their push for promotion to the NPL NNSW.
South Cardiff FC v Newcastle Croatia
Ulinga Oval, Saturday 6pm
South Cardiff FC welcomes Newcastle Croatia to Ulinga Oval on Saturday night, with both squads returning to action after their respective matches were postponed due to the heavy rain last weekend.
The match features two teams with different objectives, pairing a struggling home side against a high-scoring opposition.
This fixture marks a critical point for South Cardiff’s season, who find themselves at the foot of the standings at the midway phase of the campaign.
In their most recent outing, the Gunners suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat at the hands of Lake Macquarie City FC, a surprising blowout result given the side’s competitiveness in prior weeks.
This competitiveness was evident in their opening-round meeting with Croatia, which was a tight contest that could have gone either way.
Despite a narrow loss in that fixture, the Gunners must replicate that work rate and go one step better to secure a vital victory and move away from the bottom of the table.
Newcastle Croatia arrives at Ulinga Oval determined to prove their credentials as genuine top-four contenders.
Earning a reputation as the competition's entertainers, the visitors have developed a knack for edge-of-the-seat results, a trend highlighted in their last fixture in round eight, when they fought back from behind to edge out Cessnock City Hornets in a 3-2 thriller.
Croatia has specialised in narrow, single-goal victories this year, including that tight opening-day win over the Gunners.
Croatia will be targeting a more comfortable performance this time around to prove they can consistently dispatch sides below them on the table while maintaining their recent trajectory on the table.
Three points for Newcastle Croatia would keep them within arm's reach of the promotion play-off spots and signal to the rest of the competition that they are a force to be feared.
For South Cardiff, a win would provide a needed lifeline and provide the perfect platform to rebuild their season and climb off the bottom of the league.
Wallsend FC v New Lambton FC
Ladbrokes Gardens, Sunday 3pm
League leaders Wallsend FC host second-place New Lambton FC at Ladbrokes Gardens on Sunday afternoon in one of the competition's most anticipated games thus far.
Wallsend enters the match well-rested after their fixture was washed out last weekend.
The Red Devils currently hold the top spot on the ladder and will be keen to replicate the grit they showed in their dramatic round eight derby win over West Wallsend SFC.
This weekend represents a big opportunity for the hosts; a victory would allow Wallsend to extend their lead over New Lambton at the top while still maintaining a valuable game in hand.
The league leaders will have to navigate this task without Bailey Newton, who serves a suspension following a straight red card in the derby.
New Lambton makes the trip to Ladbrokes Gardens carrying momentum after securing a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Cessnock City Hornets last Saturday.
That result put the Eagles into second place on the table, capping off a strong run of form that has provided three wins from their last five outings.
Known for their commitment to playing expansive, attractive football, the visitors face one of their biggest challenges this weekend.
New Lambton's fluid game in possession will be tested by Wallsend's off-ball work rate and physicality, especially if wet weather creates a heavy playing surface.
The outcome of this top-of-the-table battle could have huge ramifications for the race for promotion into the NPL NNSW.
For New Lambton, taking three points away from home would see them go into top spot and prove their promotion credentials.
For Wallsend, a disciplined performance on home turf would help them keep their status as the team to beat and put them in a commanding position at the top of the league.
