HIT106.9 Northern League One Round 11 Preview: Title race heats up as Wallsend face Lake Macquarie, while Croatia eyes top four

Match of the Round
Wallsend FC v Lake Macquarie City FC
Ladbrokes Gardens, Sunday 11am

Wallsend FC head coach Chris Gallagher says his players understand the battle ahead as they prepare to host Lake Macquarie City FC at Ladbroke Gardens in a huge game on Sunday that could have massive ramifications in the promotion hunt.

The Red Devils enter the weekend in superb form, maintaining their position at the summit of the table following a victory over Newcastle Croatia in their round nine catch-up fixture, as well as a 5-2 win over New Lambton FC in their round 10 catch-up fixture on Wednesday night.

Wallsend has established itself as the team to beat this season, driven by a dangerous frontline and a crop of local talent.

The hosts will also draw confidence from the reverse fixture in round two, where they secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Roosters.

But Gallagher expects a completely different challenge this time around.

"Every club in the competition has improved since then," Gallagher said.

"Everyone's feet are sharper, they're a little bit more into the grind of the season, and we just need to keep getting points so we can keep putting a distance between us and the teams chasing that top four."

With depth and squad recovery being important during a heavily congested scheduling block, Gallagher believes his squad possesses the maturity to handle the occasion without extra motivation.

"I don't think I have to tell the players if they're big games," Gallagher said.

"In seasons gone by, we had to drive home that intensity, whereas this year the boys already know where they need to maintain.

“That's purely through some of the individuals we brought in and the other boys who have been around for multiple seasons now. We've got to do the business."

Lake Macquarie City FC travels to Ladbroke Gardens, also riding a wave of momentum after putting together a four-game winning streak following their 3-0 win over Toronto Awaba FC in their round nine catch-up game on Wednesday night.

The Roosters currently have one of the most prolific attacks in the competition, fronted by Carter Smith, who currently leads the golden boot race.

While their frontline has consistently produced over the last two seasons, their climb up the table has been driven by an impressive defensive turnaround that has seen them concede just a single goal in four games, which came from a penalty.

Head coach Michael Body attributes this defensive stability to a moment earlier in the campaign when their mentality shifted.

"The Newcastle Croatia game, where we lost it at the death, was a point where we sat down as a group and discussed what we wanted to achieve," Body said.

"We came to the conclusion that if we're going to concede so many goals, we're not going to achieve our goal.

“Since then, we've continued our attacking results but with a much more solid approach to managing matches.

“If you want to get promoted, that's the type of defensive performance you need."

Body remains confident that his young backline has further matured since their early-season defeat to Wallsend, where they were caught out on the counter-attack.

"Our defence has definitely improved, and our management of games has certainly improved too," Body said.

"Reflecting back on that first game, we made some decisions to try and win by going all-out attack, and we got punished by it.

“Going away to the Gardens this weekend, we’ve just got to be better prepared in the sense that it's a 90-minute match, and nothing is a rush anymore."

For Lake Macquarie, securing three points on the road would mark one of their most memorable results of the season, closing the gap on Wallsend at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, a victory on home turf for Wallsend would continue their strong run of form and extend their points advantage at the top of the standings.

Newcastle Croatia v Toronto Awaba FC
Lale Macquarie Regional Football Facility - 3, Saturday 2pm

Newcastle Croatia head coach Joshua Popescu says his side is focused on minimising errors as they prepare to host Toronto Awaba FC at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Saturday.

Croatia enters the fixture following a 4-2 defeat to Wallsend FC in their round nine catch-up match but rebounded quickly with a 3-1 victory over South Cardiff FC on Wednesday night.

Despite recent squad disruptions, the hosts have found a more settled run of form, turning around a slow start to the campaign and moving into top-four contention.

While defensive vulnerabilities remain a challenge, Croatia’s expansive attack has been a deciding factor, allowing them to outscore opponents and secure vital points.

Popescu emphasised that adapting to the division's speed and technical standards requires maintaining concentration throughout the match.

"What I'm learning every week is just how much quality this competition actually has to offer," Popescu said.

"You honestly cannot afford to make one mistake.

“The moment you make a mistake, you're punished.

“You have to play that full 90 minutes without making a single error, but it's hard to be perfect."

Croatia will navigate this week's fixture congestion with a depleted squad due to a string of key absences.

"It's coming at a bad time for us, and we've got a lot of midfielders away," Popescu said.

“I'm looking at the depth from the bench to come on and do a job.

“It's going to be a battle, just like every other game, but you just have to believe in the boys you put out there."

Toronto Awaba FC travels to Speers Point looking to escape the relegation spot, following a round 10 loss to Dudley Redhead United SFC and a subsequent catch-up defeat against Lake Macquarie City FC on Wednesday night.

While struggling to find consistency, the visitors can draw confidence from the reverse fixture at the start of the season, however, where they defeated Croatia 2-1.

Though they face a much-improved opponent this time around, the Stags will view this fixture as a crucial game that could start to revitalise their season.

For Toronto, claiming three points on the road would help pull ahead of South Cardiff FC and move above the relegation zone.

Securing a win on home soil for Croatia would help push them directly into the promotion play-off conversation and firmly away from the bottom of the table.

Singleton Strikers v New Lambton FC
Howe Park, Saturday 2pm

Singleton Strikers FC hosts New Lambton FC at Howe Park on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking to build on recent form.

New Lambton enters the fixture having won three of their last five matches.

Picking up three points on Saturday would not only help them keep their place in the top four but also strengthen their push for the league title.

On Wednesday night, however, New Lambton missed an opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Wallsend FC after suffering a 5-2 defeat in their round 10 catch-up fixture.

It was an uncharacteristic defensive display from the Golden Eagles, who had conceded just 10 goals all season prior to that match.

They will look to rebound quickly and secure all three points this time around, especially after being held to a 1-1 draw by Singleton back in round two.

While New Lambton has improved since that initial meeting, Singleton will still draw confidence from that previous performance, especially now that they are playing on home turf.

The Strikers enter the match following a sharp turnaround in form, highlighted by a positive 1-1 draw against Dudley Redhead United in round nine.

They backed that performance up on Tuesday night, capitalising on a 10-man Cessnock City Hornets to secure a dominant 5-1 victory in their round 10 catch-up fixture.

While things still remain tight at the lower end of the table, Tuesday night's victory saw them climb up the standings and put themselves back in the fight for a top-four position.

Another victory for Singleton would provide further breathing room from the lower end of the table and close the gap between them and the promotion play-off spaces.

For New Lambton, taking three points on the road would show their intent as a title contender and keep pressure on the frontrunners.

West Wallsend SFC v Dudley Redhead United
Johnston Park, Saturday 2pm

West Wallsend SFC welcomes Dudley Redhead United to Johnston Park on Saturday afternoon, with the hosts looking to carry over the positive momentum of their recent performances.

The Bluebells approach this match having lost just once in their last five outings, a run that highlights a significant turnaround from their opening weeks of the season.

Despite this upturn in form, they will be disappointed by last weekend's 2-2 draw against South Cardiff FC in their round nine catch-up fixture, where dropping two points stalled their opportunity to close the gap on the promotion-hunting pack.

They will look to put this aside and also make amends for their previous encounter with Dudley, which resulted in a heavy 5-1 defeat.

West Wallsend has improved significantly since those opening weeks; however, meaning the visitors face a much tougher assignment this time around.

The Bluebells will be without Jarrod Purcell as he serves a one match suspension after picking up a second yellow card against South Cardiff.

Dudley will need to be sharp from the opening whistle to break down a much-improved Bluebells defensive unit on their own patch.

Dudley enters the contest after getting back on track with a decisive 3-0 win against Toronto Awaba FC in round 10.

They were also the only team in the league without any catch-up fixtures on their schedule.

This gives them the benefit of a complete rest during last weekend's washout fixtures, allowing them to travel to Johnston Park with fresh legs.

Dudley will be forced to reshape their lineup without Jared Dickinson, who is suspended after picking up a second yellow card against Toronto Awaba FC.

For Dudley, a victory will preserve their standing inside the top four and protect their position in the promotion play-off places, as surrounding teams continue to hold games in hand.

As for West Wallsend, securing a positive result on home soil is key to drawing closer to the top four while building a safer distance from the lower end of the standings.

Cessnock City Hornets v South Cardiff FC
Turner Park, Sunday 11am

Cessnock City Hornets hosts South Cardiff FC at Turner Park on Sunday afternoon, with both sides looking to improve on recent form.

The Hornets return to action after consecutive weekends on the sidelines due to a washout and the long weekend.

They did, however, return to the field on Tuesday night, suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat against Singleton Strikers in their round 10 midweek catch-up match.

Cessnock’s task was made considerably harder early in the second half when Zac Kronholm was sent off, having earlier netted the opening goal to put his side 1-0 up.

The red card leaves their leading goalscorer suspended for seven matches, essentially ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

It is a massive blow for the hosts, who are desperate to end a six-game winless slump.

After a strong start to the campaign, Cessnock now finds themselves sitting outside the top four, a position that will be made harder to fix with their top goalscorer sidelined until their last fixture in round 18.

Aiming to get back on track with a victory, the Hornets can, however, draw confidence from their 3-0 win over South Cardiff back in round two, though the Gunners played the majority of that match with 10 men.

South Cardiff travels to Turner Park after a more positive draw to West Wallsend SFC in their round 9 catch-up match last weekend.

Despite losing to Newcastle Croatia FC 3-1 midweek in their round 10 catch-up game, the Gunners have climbed above Toronto Awaba FC, keeping them above the relegation zone for now.

While they hold just a one-point advantage over the Stags, another positive result would build momentum and help them pull away from the bottom of the table.

They will also have to manage the squad without Jemila Oko, who is suspended after receiving a red card in their last fixture against West Wallsend.

Securing a positive result on the road would help them break away from Toronto, yet a loss could potentially see them claw back in the relegation spot.

For Cessnock, claiming all three points on home turf would not only snap their winless streak but help them push back toward the promotion play-off positions.
