HIT106.9 Northern League One Round 12 Preview: Survival on the line as Stags face Gunners in relegation battle, while Bluebells need 90-minute effort against Strikers

Match of the Round
Toronto Awaba FC v South Cardiff FC
Lyall Peacock Oval, Saturday 2pm

Toronto Awaba FC’s director of football and acting head coach, Ricki Metcalfe, believes his squad must focus on maintaining their effort and desire as they host South Cardiff FC in a high-stakes relegation battle at Lyall Peacock Oval on Saturday.

Metcalfe, who is stepping into the role while head coach Jarrad Hiles is temporarily away, will focus on addressing the defensive struggles that occurred during their high-scoring 5-4 defeat to Newcastle Croatia last weekend.

Despite scoring four goals and showing fighting spirit to launch a late comeback, Toronto was undone by a brief collapse early in the second half.

Sitting four points below South Cardiff at the bottom of the table, the hosts know that securing a victory this weekend would be crucial in their fight to avoid relegation.

Metcalfe noted that lapses in concentration have proved costly for his side, but he remains confident in the squad's attitude and ability.

"We controlled the game for large periods, but we went to sleep for about 10 minutes and conceded four quick goals," Metcalfe said.

"It is about maintaining our concentration for the whole 90 minutes and not giving opposition teams easy opportunities."

Despite the recent string of results, Metcalfe highlighted that the team morale remains high as they look to turn things around.

“The boys are still quietly confident that they can get back to winning ways, and we've shown the last couple of years that that's certainly what they can do," Metcalfe said.

"We are focusing entirely on what we can control, being disciplined in our structure, and staying positive and relentless from the opening whistle."

South Cardiff FC arrives at Lyall Peacock Oval with a confidence boost after securing a gritty 2-0 victory over Cessnock City Hornets last Sunday.

The visitors lifted their performance after a scoreless first half, breaking the deadlock early in the second period before converting a penalty to double their lead.

Head coach Keelan Hamilton attributes the result to his side's half-time adjustments and defensive performance under pressure, especially after they went down to 10-men.

"It was great to get back into the winner's circle. We managed the game well, and got ourselves ahead so we could control the tempo," Hamilton said.

"The send-off made the final 20 minutes tough, but the boys dug in exceptionally well and did not give away any clear-cut chances.”

Despite focusing on their own game, Hamilton admits that the stakes are very high for both clubs heading into the weekend.

“We know this weekend is highly consequential for the bottom of the table, and Toronto will be hungry, so we are expecting a tight and well-contested match," Hamilton said.

"They've got some highly experienced and talented players in their squad, so we'll be expecting nothing but their best."

With both clubs fighting to keep their status in the division, expect a physical, tense encounter in which avoiding mistakes at the back will be key.

Toronto are expecting a few returns to the squad, while South Cardiff will be without Daniel Keelan due to suspension.

A victory for Toronto would close the gap at the bottom of the table between them and the Gunners to just one point.

For South Cardiff, a win on the road would stretch their buffer over the hosts to seven points, creating further breathing room from the relegation spot.

Singleton Strikers v West Wallsend SFC
Howe Park, Sunday 1pm

West Wallsend SFC head coach Bailey Cox says his side must maintain their standard of performance for the full 90 minutes as they travel to Howe Park to take on a wounded Singleton Strikers this Sunday.

The Bluebells enter the fixture following a hard-fought 0-0 draw against league leaders Dudley Redhead United, a result Cox believes proved his squad has resolved their early-season defensive issues.

"Since our first three losses of the year, we've been piecing it together pretty well and have really locked it up at the back," Cox said.

"On the weekend, it was nice to see us get back to what we are capable of.

“We had a couple of good chances to probably pinch a 1-0 win at the end, but Dudley are a well-structured side, and it was a close game."

After a slow start to the campaign, in which they struggled to secure clean sheets, West Wallsend has significantly tightened its defensive structure.

Reflecting on the campaign thus far, Cox emphasised that consistency remains the main focus for his team moving into the back end of the season.

"The main thing for us is just showing up for the full 90 minutes," Cox said.

"If we can keep putting it together as we did on the weekend, it gives us a lot of hope that we'll be right there challenging at the end of the year."

Singleton Strikers return to Howe Park reeling from a heavy 8-0 loss against New Lambton FC last weekend.

The Strikers have hit a recent downturn in form, winning just one of their last five matches.

They will also be forced to make a change in between the sticks, with starting goalkeeper Stuart Plant suspended following his red card last week.

Despite Singleton's recent performance, Cox insisted his side is not underestimating the trip away, noting that they have historically found it difficult to secure a result on Singleton's home turf.

“We’ve always found it tough out there," Cox said.

"I know they are coming off a heavy defeat, but from what I’ve seen, a lot of those goals came late after the send-off.

“It will definitely be a tough battle for us, and we have to treat it like a big game to get the three points."

A victory for the visitors would put them three points clear of Singleton on the table, and help bring the Bluebells into the top-four conversation.

For Singleton, they will be looking for a strong home performance to snap their recent dry spell, stabilise their mid-table position, and avoid slipping into the relegation battle.

New Lambton FC v Newcastle Croatia
Alder Park, Saturday 4.30pm

New Lambton FC hosts Newcastle Croatia at Alder Park on Saturday afternoon, in a massive game that would strengthen their positions in the top-four race.

New Lambton enters the fixture with confidence following a dominant 8-0 victory over Singleton Strikers last weekend.

The result drastically improved the Golden Eagles goal difference and put their campaign back on track after a midweek loss to Wallsend FC.

The hosts know that securing another three points on home turf is essential to maintain pressure on the league leaders, Wallsend.

They will look to repeat the outcome of the previous meeting between these two teams, where they secured a tight 4-3 victory.

Tensions rose during that previous encounter, and no doubt this weekend's reverse fixture will be the same fiery, high-stakes affair.

Newcastle Croatia travels to Alder Park following a high-scoring 5-4 win over Toronto Awaba FC.

While the visitors continue to deal with defensive vulnerabilities, their attacking depth remains a major strength, highlighted by a four-goal blitz in just eight minutes last week.

Croatia is further boosted by the return of key midfield players to full fitness in recent weeks, coming at a critical point in the season.

A victory on Saturday would allow the visitors to jump New Lambton on the table and break directly into the top four.

As for New Lambton, a win would consolidate their place near the top of the table and keep their title challenge within reach.

Lake Macquarie City FC v Cessnock City Hornets
Macquarie Field, Saturday 4.30pm

Lake Macquarie City FC welcome Cessnock City Hornets to Macquarie Field on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking to rebound from last weekend's results.

Lake Macquarie enters the fixture looking to recover after their four-game winning streak was snapped in a 3-0 defeat to league leaders Wallsend FC.

Despite the loss, the Roosters remain in a strong position on the table and currently hold an important game in hand over the three teams above them.

The hosts will view this home fixture as the perfect opportunity to remain in strong form and keep pace with the very top of the table.

A successful performance on Saturday could see the Roosters climb as high as second place in the standings, and more importantly, close the gap between them and Wallsend.

Cessnock travels to Macquarie Field, facing an important stretch of their campaign after going winless in their last seven outings.

The Hornets will be frustrated by last weekend's 2-0 defeat to South Cardiff, where they failed to break down the visitors, even when they went down to 10 men.

This form has seen their top-four ambitions slip away, leaving them eight points adrift of the promotion play-off spots and just five points clear of the relegation zone.

The visitors must find an immediate fix in front of the goal if they want to breach a Roosters backline that has been defensively solid this season.

The Hornets can, however, draw confidence from their previous meeting this season, where they managed a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Roosters.

A repeat of that positive result for Cessnock would provide much-needed breathing room from the bottom of the table and help them avoid entering a relegation battle.

For Lake Macquarie, a win would reignite their winning form and keep them within touching distance of the league leaders.

Dudley Redhead United v Wallsend FC
Lydon Oval, Sunday 3pm

Wallsend FC travel to Lydon Oval on Sunday afternoon to take on Dudley Redhead United, with both sides looking for a crucial three points to strengthen their respective positions towards the top of the table.

Dudley enters the fixture following a tight 0-0 draw away to West Wallsend last weekend, securing their second consecutive clean sheet.

While the hosts remain in the top four, a surging Newcastle Croatia side sits just two points behind them, meaning they cannot afford to start dropping further points.

A victory on Sunday would be a massive statement for Dudley, potentially lifting them into second place while reducing the gap to the league leaders to just three points.

More importantly, however, three points would help them maintain a buffer against the tight chasing pack directly underneath them.

Wallsend will look to replicate their performance from the first meeting between the two teams this season, where they secured a 3-1 win.

The Red Devils showed great fight to navigate a recent three-game weekly schedule, capping it off with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Lake Macquarie in the last round.

Backed by a full week of recovery, Wallsend will rely on its high defensive work rate to target another win on the road.

Sitting six points clear at the top of the competition, the visitors know that three points on Sunday would move them one step closer to automatic promotion.

For Dudley, a victory would keep their place secure in the top four and could see them climb as high as second on the  table.
