Match of the Round
Singleton Strikers v South Cardiff FC
Howe Park, Saturday 2pm
Singleton Strikers FC head coach Jason Brewer says his side are treating this weekend's clash with South Cardiff FC as a must-win, as both sides look to avoid being dragged into the relegation spot at Howe Park on Saturday afternoon.
Singleton enter the fixture having lost their round 13 fixture against Wallsend FC 4-1, a result that continued a difficult stretch in which they have failed to score in three consecutive matches and conceded 16 goals across that same period.
It is an uncharacteristic run for a side that had built their season on defensive organisation, and Brewer acknowledged that rediscovering their form in front of goal will be key to turning results around.
"We just couldn't take our opportunities, and that's been really changing games for us lately," Brewer said.
"The boys are still playing good football, but the lack of finishing has been the real difference."
Despite the recent form, Brewer is adamant his side will approach Saturday with the right mentality.
"We're treating this as a grand final game, because we don't want to get into a tug of war at the end of the season," Brewer said.
"This is a must-win game for us, and as far as our attitude goes, we just need to get our confidence back and be more clinical in front of goal."
South Cardiff arrive at Howe Park having also lost their round 13 fixture against New Lambton FC 1-0, a result head coach Keelan Hamilton felt was harsh on his side.
"We were extremely competitive again, and it was a pretty even game," Hamilton said.
"There were a few errors on our behalf, and we had a really good chance late on that we didn't take, so we feel like we should’ve left with at least a point there."
Hamilton acknowledged the pattern has become a recurring theme this season, with South Cardiff's inability to convert chances proving costly time and again.
"We're not scoring enough goals, which makes it difficult," Hamilton said.
"To the credit of our lads, they've shown great spirit and togetherness all season.”
Hamilton is expecting a tightly contested affair, similar to the first meeting between the sides, which Singleton won 1-0.
"It's going to be a tight affair. Both teams will know there's a fair bit riding on it," Hamilton said.
“Going away to Singleton is always going to be a tough and competitive fixture.
“Motivation isn't a factor for us, but we know this is a consequential game, and if we can get on the right side of it, that's going to be really important for us."
With just two points separating the sides on the table and Toronto Awaba FC closely behind, the result could have significant implications at the bottom end of the table.
Both sides will know that a loss here, combined with a positive result for Toronto, could see them drop to the foot of the table, making this one of the most important fixtures for both sides' season.
A win for South Cardiff would provide vital breathing room from the relegation zone and ease their fight for survival.
For Singleton, three points would extend the gap between themselves and the bottom of the table and help them avoid being dragged into the relegation battle.
West Wallsend SFC v New Lambton FC
Johnston Park, Sunday 3pm
New Lambton FC head coach John Bennis says his side is expecting another tough, physical contest when they travel to Johnston Park to face West Wallsend SFC on Sunday afternoon in a match that could have a major impact on the promotion play-off race.
New Lambton enter the fixture having bounced back from their round 12 4-1 defeat to Newcastle Croatia, with a hard-fought 1-0 win over South Cardiff FC last Saturday night.
Bennis acknowledged it was far from an easy performance, but at this stage of the season, the three points were all that mattered.
"Even from my playing days, South Cardiff was always a tough place to go," Bennis said.
"The pitch was a little slippery with the weather, and it was very combative.
“I thought we fought well, and we were thrilled to walk away with all three points."
Reflecting on the upcoming fixture, Bennis noted that both sides have come a long way since their first encounter, which ended in a tight 0-0 draw in round five.
With West Wallsend pulling some strong results in recent weeks to put themselves into the promotion conversation, Bennis knows the Bluebells' improved form gives him a clear indication of what to expect on Sunday.
"At that point in the season [round five] they weren't having a great run, but now they've got some momentum and strung some wins together," Bennis said.
"This competition, every game is a tough game, and we're expecting another physical and tough environment to go and play in."
West Wallsend arrive at Johnston Park having produced one of their best performances of the season last round, defeating Newcastle Croatia 2-1 to move within three points of the top four.
It has been a rollercoaster campaign for the Bluebells, with heavy defeats offset by strong performances, but their recent form suggests they have turned a corner and are genuine contenders for a promotion play-off place.
Another win here would not only close the gap to the top four but send a clear message to the rest of the competition that they are well and truly in the promotion race.
With Croatia, Dudley United Redhead and West Wallsend all within touching distance of New Lambton, there are few bigger fixtures left in the season for either side, with a positive result here potentially proving decisive in the fight for a top-four place.
A win for West Wallsend would close the gap to the top four to just one point and show their promotion credentials.
For New Lambton, victory would consolidate their position in the top four and keep the chasing pack at a healthier distance.
Cessnock City Hornets v Dudley Redhead United
Turner Park, Saturday 2pm
Cessnock City Hornets host Dudley Redhead United at Turner Park on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking to build on contrasting fortunes from round 13.
Cessnock heads into the match on the back of a 2-0 win over Toronto Awaba FC, ending an eight-game winless run.
The result gave the Hornets some breathing room at the bottom of the table, but they know every remaining match carries significant importance given how tightly contested the relegation battle remains.
A loss this weekend could pull Cessnock straight back into the fight to avoid the drop, making another positive result crucial.
Dudley heads into the match looking to respond after an uncharacteristic 7-2 defeat to Lake Macquarie City FC in round 13, a result that stunned the league given the side's defensive consistency throughout the season.
The loss was particularly damaging after Dudley held Lake Macquarie at 2-2 with 40 minutes remaining before conceding five unanswered goals.
Both sides return from a weekend break, with Dudley eager to put that result behind them after it saw them slip from the top four into fifth place.
With the surrounding teams tightly bunched on points, Dudley know that any further slip-ups risk leaving them falling behind the pack in the top four, making a strong response here essential with so few rounds remaining.
A win for Dudley would help steady the ship and keep their top-four ambitions back on track.
For Cessnock, victory would extend their breathing room from the bottom of the table and continue their push away from the relegation zone.
Newcastle Croatia v Lake Macquarie City FC
Macquarie Field, Saturday 3pm
Newcastle Croatia take on Lake Macquarie City FC at Macquarie Field on Saturday afternoon, in a fixture expected to be an entertaining encounter if their first meeting this season is anything to go by.
Croatia enter the match disappointed not to have taken anything from their round 13 clash with West Wallsend SFC, a missed opportunity given victory would have pushed them into the top four.
Despite that setback, Croatia have been one of the most in-form sides in the competition, and they know a win this weekend, while a tough ask, would send a clear message to the rest of the league that they are genuine promotion contenders.
They will also take confidence from their earlier meeting with Lake Macquarie, a thrilling 4-3 win that ranked among the standout matches of the season, and one that proved they have the attacking quality to trouble the league's best.
Lake Macquarie arrive in red-hot form, having put seven past Dudley United Redhead and West Wallsend in their last two outings, a run that has turned heads and shown that they are strong contenders for the title this season.
Sitting just below league leaders Wallsend FC, the Roosters know they will need to keep collecting points week after week if they want to overtake them at the top.
Containing one of the league's strongest defences and attacks, Lake Macquarie are aware from their first meeting with Croatia that this fixture will be one of their toughest tests yet.
Having won four of their last five matches, they will go into the contest believing they can extend their winning run and pile further pressure on Wallsend at the summit.
For Newcastle Croatia, victory would be a major statement of intent in their push for a place in the top four.
Toronto Awaba FC v Wallsend FC
Lyall Peacock Oval, Sunday 1pm
Toronto Awaba FC host Wallsend FC at Lyall Peacock Oval on Sunday afternoon, with both sides chasing points for very different reasons at opposite ends of the table.
Toronto will view every remaining fixture this season as a must-win as they look to climb away from the bottom of the table.
The Stags enter the contest off the back of a tight but disappointing 2-0 loss to Cessnock City Hornets in round 13, a particularly costly result given a win would have lifted them out of last place for the first time this season.
But the Red Devils will not take Toronto lightly, and will be well aware of just how competitive the Stags can be on their day.
The visitors will draw confidence from their 6-3 win in the reverse fixture earlier this season, though that scoreline also served as a reminder of the threat Toronto possess going forward when given the space to attack.
Wallsend arrive in good form, having beaten Singleton Strikers FC 4-1 in their round 13 catch-up fixture, and they remain unbeaten in their last eight matches, a run that underlines just how strong their season has been.
That consistency has been built on a balance of defensive discipline and being clinical in front of goal, qualities that have kept the chasing pack at bay for much of the campaign.
With Lake Macquarie City FC keeping the pressure behind them on the table, Wallsend know they cannot afford to drop points and will be aiming to maintain their grip at the top of the table.
Toronto, by contrast, will need a near-perfect performance at both ends of the pitch if they are to cause an upset against the league's current top side.
Coming away from this fixture with any points would be a huge step towards climbing out of the bottom of the table and avoiding relegation.
A win for Wallsend would extend their unbeaten run and keep Lake Macquarie at arm's length in the title race.
