Singleton Strikers head coach Jason Brewer praised his side's desire as the Strikers secured a vital 1-0 victory over South Cardiff FC at Howe Park on Saturday afternoon.
The result was one of Singleton's most important wins of the season, as they opened up a five-point buffer between themselves and bottom-placed Toronto Awaba FC.
Singleton started the brighter of the two sides, and their early pressure was rewarded in the 12th minute when Isaac Collins slotted home after a neat passage of play into the box.
From there, South Cardiff controlled much of the tempo, particularly in the second half, but were unable to find a way through a well-organised Singleton defensive unit.
The Gunners created two clear one-on-one opportunities that presented their best chances of finding an equaliser.
On both occasions, however, they failed to convert, leaving them to rue another afternoon where quality in the final third proved the difference.
Singleton held firm defensively despite those chances, claiming all three points.
Brewer said his side showed exactly the right mentality for a game of this importance.
"I think our boys just wanted it more today, they played it like it was a grand final and got the result," Brewer said.
"We pressed early, got a couple of good chances, and ended up hitting one in, but then it became a bit of a dogfight towards the end, and the boys showed some real character to hold on."
Brewer also pointed to the clean sheet as a major positive, having conceded freely in recent weeks.
"We want to be hard to score against, and we haven't done that lately, so that was really pleasing," Brewer said.
"As I said to the boys, they showed their character at the end there, really digging in and making sure we didn't concede."
For South Cardiff, the result continues a season-long pattern that head coach Keelan Hamilton has spoken about on several occasions.
Hamilton said the first goal proved to be the defining moment of the contest.
"The first goal in those sorts of games is very important, and unfortunately we weren't able to get that," Hamilton said.
"From our point of view, it was too easy to play through us in that moment, so we didn't get our defensive block set well enough in the first half."
Hamilton acknowledged his side improved after the break but admitted the lack of composure in front of goal has become a persistent issue.
"We created two really good chances but we just didn't execute them," Hamilton said.
"We're not scoring enough goals, and that can flow into a confidence thing as well. The lads are trying and will keep chipping away, but it's been frustrating to keep letting opportunities slip."
Despite the result, Hamilton said the spirit within the group remains strong as they head into the final rounds of the season.
"We've just got to be a little bit more courageous in terms of taking the game on," Hamilton said.
"The spirit is still high and the effort is still there, so we're in a good space in that respect. We just need to take it one week at a time."
With Toronto below South Cardiff on the table on goal difference, every point from here to the end of the season will prove critical for the Gunners.
South Cardiff face a tough test at home against league leaders Wallsend FC in round 15, a fixture that will require one of their best performances of the season.
