Match of the Round
Dudley Redhead United v Newcastle Croatia
Lydon Oval, Sunday 3pm
Dudley Redhead United head coach Mark Wilson says there’s no hiding from the importance of Sunday's game with Newcastle Croatia at Lydon Oval, with the result likely to play a decisive role in shaping the top-four picture.
Dudley enter the fixture having moved out of the top four, with just two points collected from their last four matches, a run Wilson acknowledged has fallen short of expectations.
"There's no hiding from it this weekend. Two points from a possible 12 hasn't been good enough," Wilson said.
"We're equal on points with Croatia so it's a huge game that could dictate who makes the top four."
Wilson said while he will address the significance of the fixture through the week, he expects the table to do much of the talking.
"I would hope the table speaks for itself and the players have got their own motivation, because it doesn't get much bigger than Sunday's match," Wilson said.
Dudley will take some confidence from their 3-2 victory over Croatia in their first meeting this season, though Wilson knows just how tight that game was heading into the rematch.
"It was a closely contested game. We scored off a couple of set pieces, and it was a very tight affair, so I don't think you can take too much from it," Wilson said.
"You look at Croatia's side and their starting eleven, they've got quality all over the park. It's going to be a tough game."
Newcastle Croatia arrive at Lydon Oval sitting fourth on the table, having narrowly lost 2-1 to Lake Macquarie FC last weekend in a performance head coach Joshua Popescu felt could have gone either way.
Popescu said the second half showing against Lake Macquarie gave his squad plenty of confidence heading into the weekend.
"Lake Macquarie have been putting big scorelines on teams, so coming away with a two-one loss, and confidently thinking we should have won it in the second half, the boys take a lot out of that," Popescu said.
"That's last week though. We now need to turn our focus to this one."
Popescu was passionate about what is at stake for Croatia, describing the importance of the fixture for his side.
"The boys are buzzing, they know what's at stake. A win puts us three points clear of Dudley with four games left," Popescu said.
"It's still our first year in this league. If you'd asked me at the start of the season if I'd be sitting where we are now, I probably would have said no.
“It shows how far we’ve come, but there are four games to go; anything can happen."
Reflecting on the first meeting between the sides, Popescu is determined his side will leave nothing to chance this time around.
"It was a pretty fiery contest on and off the pitch, and I thought we were a little unlucky to come away with nothing," Popescu said.
"We're just going to focus on what we do best and let our Football do the talking."
With both sides level on points and goal difference the only thing separating them, Sunday's result is as crucial as they come.
A win for Croatia would put them three points clear of Dudley and in the box seat for a top-four finish.
For Dudley, victory would see them reclaim their spot in the top four and keep their promotion hopes alive.
Lake Macquarie City FC v Singleton Strikers
Macquarie Field, Saturday 2pm
Lake Macquarie City FC welcome Singleton Strikers to Macquarie Field on Saturday afternoon, with the home side looking to extend their winning run and maintain their grip at the top of the table.
Lake Macquarie enter the fixture in first place following four consecutive wins, the most recent a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle Croatia that moved them ahead of Wallsend on goal difference.
It has been a season-defining stretch for the Roosters, who have combined one of the league's most threatening attacks with a significantly improved defensive record to become the competition's most consistent side in recent weeks.
Their defensive solidity in particular has been the cornerstone of their run, and they will look to maintain that standard against a Singleton side that will arrive with renewed confidence.
Singleton travel to Macquarie Field off the back of a crucial 1-0 win over South Cardiff FC last weekend, a result that moved them five points clear of bottom-placed Toronto Awaba FC and eased their relegation concerns significantly.
The victory gave the Strikers a timely confidence boost, but they will be under no illusions about the scale of the challenge ahead against the league's current pacesetters.
Despite that, Singleton will be aware of Toronto and South Cardiff’s position just behind them, and anything less than a competitive performance risks dragging them back into the relegation conversation.
A win for Singleton would further distance them from the relegation zone and prove that they can compete with the league’s best.
For Lake Macquarie, three points would extend their winning streak to five matches and strengthen their position at the top of the table ahead of a crucial final run of fixtures.
Cessnock City Hornets v West Wallsend SFC
Turner Park, Saturday 4.30pm
Cessnock City Hornets host West Wallsend SFC at Turner Park on Saturday afternoon, with both sides eyeing a result that could have major implications further up the table.
Cessnock arrive in good form, having claimed back-to-back wins, most recently a stunning 2-1 victory over Dudley United Redhead despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the match.
The result has moved them away from the relegation fight and towards mid-table, and another win here would be a big statement, potentially reigniting a late charge into the top four.
If Cessnock can reproduce the defensive performance they have shown in recent weeks, it would further signal that the side which started the season firing is beginning to find its form again.
They will be without Callum Bower through suspension following his red card last weekend.
West Wallsend head into the fixture after their round 14 fixture with New Lambton FC was postponed due to wet weather, giving them an extra weekend off.
The break came at a positive time for the Bluebells, with results elsewhere going in their favour, leaving them just three points behind the top four with a game in hand.
A win at Turner Park would push them firmly into the promotion conversation, though they know Cessnock will be a tough proposition given their recent form.
West Wallsend will take some confidence from their 1-0 victory over the Hornets in round six, though that tight contest serves as a reminder that little will separate the two sides on Saturday.
A win for West Wallsend would push them to within touching distance of the top four and keep their promotion hopes alive.
For Cessnock, victory would be their third consecutive win and could see them enter the top-four conversation themselves.
South Cardiff FC v Wallsend FC
Ulinga Oval, Sunday 1pm
South Cardiff FC host Wallsend FC at Ulinga Oval on Sunday afternoon, with the home side facing a fixture that could not be more significant in their battle to avoid relegation.
South Cardiff enter the contest having suffered a 1-0 defeat to Singleton Strikers last weekend, a result that was a major missed opportunity to climb away from the danger zone.
Sitting just above Toronto Awaba FC on goal difference, the Gunners know that every remaining fixture from here carries enormous weight, and that points on the board are running out fast.
While facing the competition's second-placed side is a daunting task on paper, South Cardiff will draw confidence from their 2-1 victory over Wallsend earlier in the season, one of their strongest performances of the campaign.
They know they will need to replicate that level of display if they are to take anything from this contest.
Wallsend arrive at Ulinga Oval stinging from a 2-2 draw with bottom-placed Toronto last weekend, a result that saw them slip to second on the table with Lake Macquarie moving ahead on goal difference.
Despite the disappointment, Wallsend have not lost since round six, a remarkable run that underlines their consistency throughout the season.
They will be wary of the threat South Cardiff possess, particularly given what happened in their first meeting, and will know that another slip-up here could prove costly in the title race.
A win for Wallsend could see them reclaim top spot and put the pressure back on Lake Macquarie City FC ahead of the final rounds.
For South Cardiff, victory would be another big upset and provide a much-needed lifeline in their fight for survival.
New Lambton FC v Toronto Awaba FC
Alder Park, Sunday 3pm
New Lambton FC host Toronto Awaba FC at Alder Park on Sunday afternoon, with both sides entering the fixture for contrasting reasons at opposite ends of the table.
New Lambton's round 14 fixture against West Wallsend SFC was postponed due to wet weather, but the weekend still delivered positive news, with both Newcastle Croatia and Dudley Redhead United losing their respective matches to leave the Golden Eagles two points clear of both sides with a game in hand.
The round 14 results mean New Lambton head into this fixture with a great opportunity to keep their place in the top four.
They have shown mixed performances in recent weeks and will be eager to rediscover the consistency that has defined their best results this season.
Toronto arrives at Alder Park after earning a hard-fought 2-2 draw against then-league leaders Wallsend FC last Sunday, a result that moved them level on points with South Cardiff FC above them.
It was one of the Stags' most impressive performances of the season and a reminder of the quality they possess on their day.
Another positive result here would carry enormous weight in their fight for survival, potentially lifting them above South Cardiff and out of the relegation spot for one of the first times this season.
A win for Toronto would be a huge step in their fight for survival, with the possibility of climbing out of the relegation zone for one of the first times this season.
For New Lambton, three points would consolidate their top-four position and keep the chasing pack at a safer distance heading into the final rounds of the season.
