Match of the Round
Wallsend FC v Thornton Redbacks

Toronto Awaba FC v Lake Macquarie City FC
Match postponed due to wet weather.
Cessnock City Hornets 0-1 Kahibah FC
Kahibah took advantage of the chance to play on a soggy weekend across the region, climbing to second place on the table thanks to a 1-0 victory over Cessnock City on Saturday.
While all other round nine HIT106.9 Northern League One matches were postponed due to wet weather, Kahibah’s match with struggling Cessnock City was able to go ahead at Turner Park.
The Hornets were looking to avoid a fifth defeat in a row having missed the chance to remove themselves from the logjam at the foot of the table when they went down 2-0 to Dudley Redhead United in their rescheduled round six match on Wednesday night.
The loss was the Hornets’ fourth in a row and second in four days after they slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Thornton last Sunday.
Kahibah were looking to bounce back after being held to a 1-1 draw by Singleton last weekend. Blair Newham’s side knew a win would take them up to second place, just four points behind leaders Toronto Awaba.
And it was Kahibah that started the stronger with Riley Ferguson making it two goals in as many weeks to give the visitors the lead 10 minutes before half-time. Ferguson had also put Kahibah in front against Singleton last weekend, with the goal against Cessnock his third in five appearances in the top grade this season.
Cessnock’s poor form in front of goal continued, with the Hornets unable to secure an equaliser. Josh Maguire’s side have now scored just eight goals in nine matches this season, with the competition’s leading scorer Zac Kronholm having scored seven of them.
The defeat saw Cessnock remain in eighth place on seven points, only above Thornton and last-placed Wallsend FC on goal difference. Though the Hornets have now played two matches more than Wallsend and one game more than Thornton.
Kahibah are now second, four points behind Toronto Awaba, as they attempt to chase down automatic promotion.
Kahibah will look to keep their momentum going when they host Wallsend on Sunday.
Cessnock will be desperate for a change in fortune when they travel to Singleton to take on the Strikers on Saturday.
