Match of the Round
New Lambton FC v Dudley Redhead United
Alder Park, Saturday 4.30pm
New Lambton FC head coach John Bennis believes his side must maintain focus for the full 90 minutes as they host league leaders Dudley Redhead United SFC at Alder Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles enter the fixture looking to recover from a 2-0 defeat to Lake Macquarie City FC last weekend.
Despite the scoreline, Bennis was satisfied with most of the performance, noting that the game was decided by a brief lapse in concentration in the closing stages.
"I thought we were really good for 80 minutes and probably just switched off for a moment," Bennis said.
"To Lake's credit, they took advantage of that.
“We created a few opportunities before that which we didn't finish, so that’s something we’ll have to tidy up."
Defensive organisation has been a strength for New Lambton this season, with the side currently leading the league in clean sheets.
Bennis emphasised that maintaining this discipline will be key against a well-drilled Dudley outfit.
"In any game, if you don't concede, you don't drop points," Bennis said.
“It's crucial we try to keep clean sheets as often as possible.
“Dudley will be tough to break down, and they have their threats going forward as well, so it’ll be another great challenge for our group."
Dudley Redhead United arrives at Alder Park, sitting in first place for the first time in the Hit106.9 Northern League One.
The visitors have secured three consecutive victories, including a dramatic 2-1 win over South Cardiff FC last weekend, where they converted a late penalty.
Head coach Mark Wilson attributes their recent climb up the table to the squad's mental toughness and ability to secure results in tight contests.
"They're a very resolute and mentally tough bunch of boys," Wilson said.
"They always work hard and keep fighting right to the end. I thought we were good value [last week] and I'm really proud they didn't give up."
Despite their position at the top of the table, Wilson is keeping his squad grounded, acknowledging the quality of New Lambton, a side that has proven difficult to beat at home.
"We're definitely not getting ahead of ourselves," Wilson said.
“It’s good to be on top, but you drop one or two matches, and you could be out of the top four.
"I've been to watch New Lambton play a couple of times; they are set up really well and play a good style of football.
“We're expecting a really tough game."
With both sides showing great promise in the competition, expect a high-intensity encounter that could go a long way towards shaping the top-four landscape as we enter the middle of the season.
Dudley will be hoping to welcome back a few key players after managing many absences across their grades last weekend.
A victory on the road for Dudley would maintain their lead at the top and reinforce their stronghold in the top four.
For New Lambton, three points would rectify last week's loss and could see them climb back into the promotion/relegation play-off positions.
West Wallsend SFC v Wallsend FC
Johnston Park, Sunday 3pm
Wallsend FC head coach Chris Gallagher says his side is focused on rediscovering the hard work that defined their early-season form as they prepare for a high stakes derby against West Wallsend SFC at Johnston Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils enter the fixture looking to turn a slight dip in form after dropping points in consecutive weeks, most recently a 2-2 draw with Cessnock City Hornets FC.
After leading 2-0, Wallsend allowed the Hornets back into the contest; a result Gallagher attributes to lapses in concentration.
"It was a tough day at Cessnock, which you always expect, but we didn't do ourselves many favours," Gallagher said.
“We’ve had some wasted opportunities and mistakes in key moments.
"What got us to where we were was hard work, and that’s what will get us back there.”
The Red Devils expect to see the return of several key players this weekend, reaching full strength for the first time this season.
"We’ll be back to full strength," Gallagher said.
"We've had a few players that haven't even played a game this season because of injury, and they’re starting to come good now."
Looking ahead to the Wallsend derby, Gallagher is aware of the intensity and historical significance of one of the oldest rivalries in Australian football.
"There’s a little bit of an extra feeling of importance because it’s one of the oldest derbies in Australia," Gallagher noted.
“It holds real significance for both clubs.
"We want to stay as high up as we possibly can, but if you don't do the right things, Westy will punish you.
“They've got some quality players with lots of experience, and we have to make sure we match the intensity they bring."
West Wallsend SFC arrives at Johnston Park as one of the competition's most in-form teams, having collected 10 points from their last four matches.
The Bluebells have significantly improved since their sluggish start to the season, after struggling to find the net and conceding regularly in the opening rounds.
Head coach Bailey Cox will be delighted with the form his side has discovered.
The Bluebells' front line enters the derby with confidence, particularly Jarrod Purcell, who is fresh off a hat-trick last round.
This fixture holds massive weight for both sides beyond the historic rivalry and local bragging rights.
For the Bluebells, a victory would confirm their status as genuine promotion contenders and continue their climb up the table towards the promotion play-off positions.
For Wallsend, three points would help them stay in the top four and keep pace with league leaders Dudley Redhead United.
Toronto Awaba FC v Singleton Strikers
Lyall Peacock Oval, Saturday 2pm
Toronto Awaba FC hosts Singleton Strikers at Lyall Peacock Oval on Saturday, with both sides looking to stop their recent slumps in form.
The Stags are currently enduring a five-game losing streak, a run that has seen them occupy the bottom spot, conceding an average of three goals per match.
Following a 5-2 defeat to West Wallsend SFC, in which head coach Jarrad Hiles questioned the side's competitive desire, Toronto's priority is a shift in mentality.
With the pressure mounting, the hosts must find a way to redeem themselves and secure their first points in over a month to avoid being cut adrift in the relegation zone.
Singleton Strikers travel to Toronto looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats that have stalled their top-four ambitions.
The Strikers will be particularly frustrated following their 3-2 loss to Newcastle Croatia, a match they led 2-0 at half-time before suffering a second-half collapse.
While Singleton is generally recognised as difficult to break down, they have lacked consistency recently and will see this fixture as an opportunity to prove they are top four contenders.
Facing a Toronto side that has struggled defensively, the Strikers will be keen to sharpen their efforts in front of goal and rediscover their early-season form.
This fixture serves as a test of character for both sides; Toronto must tighten its defensive structure to remain competitive, while Singleton needs to ensure they can maintain a strong performance across the full 90 minutes.
A win for Toronto is vital to restore confidence and begin their climb away from the foot of the table.
For Singleton, three points will help them stay within touching distance of the top four and ensure their recent dip in form does not derail their season.
South Cardiff FC v Lake Macquarie City FC
Ulinga Oval, Saturday 3pm
South Cardiff FC hosts Lake Macquarie City FC at Ulinga Oval on Saturday afternoon, with both sides looking for points to meet very different objectives at opposite ends of the table.
Lake Macquarie City enters the contest in formidable form, having paired its league-leading attack with newfound defensive qualities.
The Roosters have recorded back-to-back clean sheets, following their 2-0 victory over New Lambton FC last weekend.
This consistency marks a defensive turnaround for a side that failed to secure a single clean sheet throughout the 2025 season.
Now sitting in third place, the visitors have the opportunity to hold their position in the promotion/relegation play-off spots and prove that their recent defensive performances are permanent.
South Cardiff will be frustrated to have left their previous match empty-handed after a strong 90-minute performance against league leaders Dudley United Redhead.
The Gunners have proven they can compete with the league's heavyweights, following up their upset win over Wallsend FC with a strong showing against Dudley last weekend.
Despite these performances, they remain just three points clear of the relegation zone.
For the hosts, the priority is converting competitive displays into points on the board to create a much-needed buffer from the looming relegation spot.
If South Cardiff can replicate the defensive discipline they showed against Dudley, they possess the quality to frustrate a Roosters side that is finally clicking at both ends of the park.
If Lake Macquarie can maintain their goal threat while keeping the backline secure, as they have in recent weeks, they will be difficult to stop.
Three points on the road for Lake Macquarie would maintain their momentum and keep them within touching distance of the top of the table as the promotion race intensifies.
A victory for South Cardiff would provide breathing room in their fight against the drop and potentially see them climb toward the mid-table.
Newcastle Croatia v Cessnock City Hornets FC
LMRFF 3, Sunday 1pm
Newcastle Croatia FC meets Cessnock City Hornets FC at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Sunday afternoon, with both teams looking to find a more consistent run of form.
Newcastle Croatia enters the fixture following a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Singleton Strikers, where they erased a two-goal half-time deficit to snatch the points in the final stages.
While the side has consistently found the back of the net this season, their ability to climb into the play-off positions may depend on tightening up a backline that has been prone to conceding.
Finding a better defensive balance remains the priority for the hosts if they are to become a threat to the top four and climb away from the bottom to mid-table.
A win on Sunday would be a significant step in that direction.
Croatia will be bolstered by the addition of Jake De Marigny as he returns to the club after a stint at Valentine FC in the NPL Men’s NNSW.
The Hornets travel to Speers Point, maintaining the league's best defensive record after conceding just five goals across seven matches.
Despite their stability at the back, the Hornets have experienced a recent dip, securing only one victory in their last five outings.
They will, however, take confidence from their comeback against Wallsend FC last week, where they fought back from 2-0 down to claim a point.
The match provides a test of whether Croatia’s expansive attacking style can expose Cessnock's system, which has proven difficult to break down all season.
Securing three points would see Croatia bridge the gap to the promotion-hunting pack and move them firmly away from the bottom end of the table.
For Cessnock, a victory is hugely important to end their current slump and keep their place within the promotion playoff spots.
