HIT106.9 Northern League One Round Eight Review: Golden Eagles outclass Dudley as Red Devils claim memorable derby win

Match of the Round
New Lambton FC 3-0 Dudley Redhead United

New Lambton FC head coach John Bennis praised his side's approach and application as the Golden Eagles secured a commanding 3-0 victory over then-league leaders Dudley Redhead United at Alder Park on Saturday afternoon.

The result moves New Lambton into the promotion/relegation play-off places, providing an immediate bounce-back from last weekend's defeat against Lake Macquarie City FC.

New Lambton established control from the opening whistle, breaking the deadlock when Angus McLeod struck it well from outside the box into the back of the net.

The hosts sustained that pressure throughout the first half, keeping a trailing Dudley side under defensive scrutiny.

Dudley improved after the interval, pressing high during the opening 15 minutes of the second half.

The visitors created a clear opportunity to draw level, but their potential equaliser was disallowed for offside.

New Lambton quickly wrestled back control of the tempo, doubling their advantage when McLeod turned provider, playing it into Raima Itabashi, who finished cleanly in the 65th minute.

Substitute Joel Caldwell rounded out the scoreline late in the contest, leaping highest to meet a corner delivery and powering home a header to secure the three points.

Bennis credited the entire squad effort and desire against a tough opponent.

"Dudley were very resilient and a tough opponent,” Bennis said.

“The whole playing group deserves credit for their performance.”

Bennis also highlighted the significance of the clean sheet, noting the defensive turnaround from previous campaigns.

"Clean sheets have been a big focus for the group having conceded 61 goals last season,” Bennis said.

“They have taken on a lot of information and applied themselves with so much effort and determination."

For Dudley, the defeat concluded their three-game winning streak and dropped them from the top spot.

Dudley head coach Mark Wilson offered an honest assessment of the 90 minutes, admitting his side was second best across the park.

"A three-nil scoreline was a fair result. We weren't in it," Wilson said.

"New Lambton were probably the best side we've played this year and were better than us in all facets.

“We got out-enthused and just weren't at the races.”

Having now lost to Wallsend FC, Lake Macquarie, and New Lambton, Wilson identified the squad's mental preparation as the primary area for improvement when facing other top-four contenders.

"I think it’s a mindset thing," Wilson said.

“We’ve got a young group, and it’s about turning up week in, week out, ready to go.

“You can't turn up like we did, otherwise you'll find yourself down.

“The good thing about football is you have the chance to put it behind you next week."

Despite the setback, Dudley will maintain confidence in their overall position on the table and will view the performance as a minor slip from their otherwise great form.

They will return home and aim to rectify this result when they host Singleton Strikers, looking to collect all three points.

New Lambton will focus on backing up their performance to secure another win next weekend when they travel to face Cessnock City Hornets.

West Wallsend SFC 2-3 Wallsend FC

Wallsend FC head coach Chris Gallagher praised the courage and high work rate of his side as the 10-man Red Devils secured a memorable and dramatic 3-2 derby victory over West Wallsend SFC at Johnston Park on Sunday afternoon.

The result sees Wallsend return to winning ways after a two-week drought, allowing them to capitalise on Dudley Redhead United’s loss and reclaim the top spot on the HIT106.9 Northern League One table.

West Wallsend started the derby well, opening the scoring in the 37th minute through Josh Williams.

Wallsend responded just before the interval when Mason King whipped in a corner delivery, allowing Bailey Newton to power home a front-post header to send the teams into the sheds locked at 1-1.

The match ignited just three minutes into the second half when Newton went from hero to villain, receiving a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident.

The Bluebells capitalised almost immediately on the man advantage, with Williams finding the net again in the 52nd minute to restore West Wallsend's lead.

Despite trailing by a goal and playing a man down, the Red Devils proved they were far from dead and buried.

Their effort paid off in the 74th minute when a bouncing ball inside the area was calmly slotted home by Cody Halpin to level the scoring at 2-2.

West Wallsend had a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead from the penalty spot shortly after, but Wallsend goalkeeper Kye Abrahams produced a crucial save to deny them.

Energised by the penalty save, the Red Devils immediately pushed down the other end of the field to alter the course of the match.

After making a tireless run into the attacking third, midfielder Zac Gallagher cut inside the 18-yard box and buried it into the bottom corner to secure a memorable derby victory.

Gallagher expressed immense pride in how his squad handled the adversity of the second-half red card.

"When we went down to 10, we actually started to play," Gallagher said.

"I've been asking them all preseason to be brave with their positioning and decision-making.

“Instead of sitting in a deep block and defending like we might have 12 months ago, we instead got at them.

“The boys were amazing today."

Gallagher emphasised the historical significance of the victory, both for its impact on the league standings and for local bragging rights.

"It’s a really good win in a derby and a great feeling for the boys because it means so much to both clubs,” Gallagher said.

“You write yourself into the history books of Wallsend and West Wallsend with a combined 270 years of history.

“Today, we got back to what we normally do. Confident forward runs and quality with and without the ball."

For West Wallsend, the defeat brings a disappointing end to their four-match unbeaten streak, particularly after failing to convert their chances while possessing a man advantage.

The result sees the Bluebells drop to seventh on the standings.

But their competitive showing against the league leaders confirms their recent turnaround in form is sustainable, leaving them four points clear of the relegation zone and four points adrift of the promotion play-off spots.

West Wallsend will travel away on Saturday to take on South Cardiff FC, aiming to rebound with a win and shorten the gap between them and the top four.

As for Wallsend, they will look to defend their position at the summit of the table when they return home to host Newcastle Croatia next round.

Toronto Awaba FC 3-0 Singleton Strikers

Toronto Awaba FC secured a vital three points and their first victory since round two with a 3-0 win over Singleton Strikers at Lyall Peacock Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The result is a major confidence booster for the Stags, who kept their first clean sheet of the campaign while moving ahead of South Cardiff at the bottom of the table.

Toronto opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Aiden Webster found the back of the net to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.

The Stags maintained their narrow lead into the half-time interval, keeping a goal-shy Singleton side at bay.

The complexion of the match shifted completely nine minutes into the second half when Singleton goalkeeper Stuart Plant was shown a straight red card.

Toronto capitalised almost immediately on the man advantage, with Nick Roberts doubling the lead in the 56th minute.

Webster then rounded out the scoring and secured his brace in the 80th minute, converting a penalty to seal the 3-0 victory.

The win provides a massive boost to Toronto’s hopes of revitalising their season as they look to build defensive consistency and climb away from the foot of the table.

For Singleton, a third consecutive defeat escalates their recent slump in form.

After a strong opening month to the competition, the Strikers have slid down the standings and now sit just two points above the drop zone.

They face another difficult assignment next round when they travel to take on Dudley Redhead United.

Toronto Awaba will look to carry this momentum into next weekend and keep out of the relegation spot when they travel to face Lake Macquarie City FC.

South Cardiff FC 1-6 Lake Macquarie City FC

Lake Macquarie City FC extended their winning streak to three matches with a dominant 6-1 victory over South Cardiff FC at Ulinga Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The result moves the Roosters' to second on the table as they once again showcase their threat in front of goal, averaging over three goals per game.

It couldn’t have started any better for the visitors, establishing control immediately and opening the scoring in just the second minute through Campbell Ross.

Lake Macquarie continued to apply pressure throughout the first half, doubling their advantage via Callum Stalling in the 39th minute before Samuel Walker added a third just before the interval.

The Roosters maintained their dominance in the second half, with Cade Thomson finding the net in the 51st minute to make it 4-0.

South Cardiff's defensive difficulties were made even more prominent when their goalkeeper crisis forced outfield player Jock Thompson to sub into goal in the 55th minute.

Despite the disadvantage, the Gunners managed a brief response in the 63rd minute when Aswin Gurung converted a penalty to make it 4-1.

But Lake Macquarie quickly nullified any threat of a comeback, as Thomson secured his brace in the 65th minute and Josh Frazer Whitten added a sixth in the 71st minute to round out a more than convincing scoreline.

The victory keeps the Roosters in formidable form as they balance their high-scoring attack with their newfound defensive consistency, conceding only once in three games.

For South Cardiff, the heavy defeat drops them to the bottom of the table, level on points with Toronto.

This marks the first time this season the Gunners have been blown out of a contest, having previously avoided conceding more than three goals in a match.

They will need to regroup defensively and find their threat in front of goal to begin climbing away from the danger zone.

South Cardiff will look to rebound on Saturday when they host West Wallsend SFC.

Lake Macquarie City FC will return home to host Toronto Awaba FC next round, looking to make it four wins from four.

Newcastle Croatia 3-2 Cessnock City Hornets

Newcastle Croatia solidified their reputation as the competition's entertainers with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Cessnock City Hornets on Sunday afternoon.

The result carries significant weight for the top-four race, allowing Croatia to leapfrog their opponents on the table.

They now sit just two points adrift of fourth place, while Cessnock falls three points behind the relegation/play-off places.

The Hornets led the scoring in the 16th minute when Samuel Buyers found the back of the net to give the visitors an early advantage.

Newcastle Croatia responded shortly after, drawing level in the 22nd minute through Ethan Gilmore before the teams went into the break locked at 1-1.

Croatia continued this momentum early in the second half as Jake McGuinness struck in the 57th minute to hand the hosts their first lead of the afternoon.

Cessnock refused to back down, finding an equaliser in the 71st minute via Zac Kronholm, whose ninth goal of the campaign moves him into second place on the league's golden boot tally.

But the celebrations were cut short when just two minutes lates the hosts secured the definitive breakthrough.

McGuinness capitalised to score his second of the match and seventh of the season in the 73rd minute, ultimately sealing the 3-2 win.

The victory gives Croatia a further confidence boost into their squad as they firmly enter the promotion/relegation play-off conversation.

For Cessnock, the defeat continues a difficult stretch that has produced just one victory from their last five outings.

While the Hornets remain within striking distance of the top four, their recent drop-off in defensive stability will be a concern to address.

They will look to return to winning ways next round when they host New Lambton FC.

Newcastle Croatia FC will instead look to make it three from three when they travel away next weekend to take on Wallsend FC.
