Match of the Round
Dudley Redhead United 1-0 Cessnock City Hornets
Dudley Redhead United head coach Mark Wilson hailed a huge three points as his side secured a disciplined 1-0 win over the previously unbeaten Cessnock City Hornets FC at Lydon Oval on Sunday.
The result marks Cessnock’s first defeat of the season and sees Dudley leapfrog into the top four, showing their fight as promotion contenders.
The hosts showed a higher level of intensity than an uncharacteristically flat Hornets side in the first half.
The match was interrupted early by injuries to both camps, with Cessnock losing Cooper Sargent inside the first 20 minutes before Dudley’s Damian Cox was also forced from the field shortly after.
Dudley’s pressure was rewarded late in the half when Luke Wilson was brought down in the box, earning a penalty in the 43rd minute.
Blayke Reeves stepped up to take the spot-kick, and while the goalkeeper managed to get a hand to the ball, the strike proved too powerful to keep out, giving the hosts a vital lead heading into the sheds.
Cessnock returned for the second half with renewed energy, showing improvement over their first-half performance as they searched for an equaliser.
Despite the Hornets’ improved movement with the ball, Dudley’s defensive structure remained compact and resolute.
The hosts held their shape effectively throughout the final 45 minutes, successfully limiting Cessnock’s attacking threats to secure the victory and claim their first clean sheet of the season.
Dudley head coach Mark Wilson was delighted with his side’s display, especially given the high stakes surrounding the fixture.
"I thought we were very good in the first half and deserved to be in front," Wilson said.
"It was a huge three points.
“I mentioned before the game that if we didn't get a result, we were two wins from five starts.
“Now we are three from five and pushing into the top four."
Wilson was particularly impressed with how his side navigated the second half, absorbing the Hornets pressure as they searched for a way back into the contest.
"They came out in the second half with a lot of energy trying to get back into it, but we defended really well," Wilson said.
"Most of the boys really stepped up today to get us over the line."
Cessnock City Hornets head coach Joshua Maguire was honest in his assessment, admitting his side fell short of the standards they had set during their unbeaten start to the season.
"I thought we were a little bit poor in our execution of the game plan," Maguire said.
"I just thought we were flat today.
“We have been really good in the last few weeks, but our players today didn't quite have that same impact.
“We had a decent chance early and didn't capitalise, and then conceding right before half-time hurts."
Maguire felt his side left their run too late, noting that while the early loss of Sargent disrupted their performance, the team failed to apply consistent pressure until the dying stages.
"Credit to Dudley, they did pretty well holding on once they had their goal," Maguire said.
"I’m disappointed we didn't knock on the door enough until the last 10 minutes.
“We have good depth on the bench, and if guys aren't pushing themselves to that certain level, we have players ready to step in."
Cessnock, while disappointed to lose their grip on top spot, remain in a strong position and will look to bounce back when they travel to Johnston Park to face West Wallsend SFC.
For Dudley, the victory sees them move into third place on the table, providing plenty of momentum ahead of their away trip to face Newcastle Croatia FC next weekend.
New Lambton FC 0-0 West Wallsend SFC
West Wallsend SFC head coach Bailey Cox credited his side's defensive shape on Saturday as the Bluebells secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against New Lambton FC at Alder Park.
While the scoreline remained deadlocked, both sides created enough opportunities to claim all three points in what proved to be a scrappy but high-intensity affair.
The result marks a well-needed defensive display for West Wallsend, who secured their first clean sheet of the season after a difficult opening month.
Cox noted that while the side is still waiting for things to click in the attacking third, their ability to grind out a result suggests they have put their early season struggles behind them.
"I reckon three weeks ago we would have lost that," Cox said.
"It’s our first clean sheet, so that’s a big positive for us.
“Tightening up the defence is 100% what we’ve been working on.
“We were leaking goals early on, but it’s gotten better and better each week."
Despite the lack of goals, the match was far from dull, with both goalkeepers called into action to keep their respective sides in the contest.
The game was characterised by missed chances in transition, as both outfits struggled to find the quality in front of goal required to settle the result.
"We had a couple of chances that we missed, but they also had some chances where we pulled off a couple of good saves," Cox said.
“They played some good football, but we battled well."
"Our attack is pretty good; we just have to start and put them in the back of the net.
The draw leaves New Lambton slightly frustrated, as three points would have provided a significant boost to their promotion/relegation play-off charge.
While the Golden Eagles controlled patches of play, they were unable to break through against a structured West Wallsend backline.
Looking ahead, Cox emphasised that capitalising on early opportunities will be the focus as they look to build on their defensive stability.
"I’d like to see us finish a few chances early next week," Cox said.
“We don’t want to be scrambling at the end searching for a goal or trying to hold on; we want to be in control."
West Wallsend SFC return home next Sunday to Johnston Park for a massive test against Cessnock City Hornets.
Meanwhile, New Lambton FC will look to bounce back and find their shooting boots in front of goal when they travel to Toronto Awaba FC next weekend.
Lake Macquarie City FC 3-4 Newcastle Croatia FC
Newcastle Croatia FC emerged winners in a seven-goal thriller at Macquarie Field on Saturday, fighting back from a two-goal deficit to secure a vital 4-3 win over Lake Macquarie City FC.
The result marks the second time this season Croatia has been involved in a 4-3 scoreline, showing the rest of the league that they are the competition’s entertainers while providing a massive boost to their position on the table.
The visitors opened the scoring early in the eighth minute through John Majurovski, but the lead was short-lived as Lake Macquarie’s Carter Smith took control of the first half.
Smith netted a remarkable 10-minute hat-trick, scoring in the 16th, 17th, and 25th minutes to put the Roosters in a 3-1 lead.
The three goals see Smith climb to the top of the league's goalscoring tally, marking his second hat-trick of the season.
But Croatia refused to fold and began its comeback just before the break.
Nicholas Cowburn found the back of the net in the 35th minute to reduce the margin to 3-2 heading into the sheds at half-time.
The momentum remained with the visitors after the restart, and they drew level in the 48th minute courtesy of Beau McDonald.
With the game locked at 3-3, both sides pushed for a winner in a tense final half-hour.
The decisive blow came in the 89th minute when Jake McGuinness found the back of the net late on, completing the comeback and ensuring Croatia left with all three points.
While defensive concerns remain for the visitors, the win helps ease the pressure near the bottom of the table and keeps them within reach of the promotion play-off spots.
For Lake Macquarie, the defeat is a step backwards despite positive results at the start of the season.
Despite Smith’s clinical display up front, the Roosters were undone by a leaky defence, marking their second loss of the season.
They will need to tighten up at the back when they travel to face an in-form Singleton Strikers next Saturday as they look to regain their position among the league's frontrunners.
Croatia will look to build on this win when they host Dudley Redhead United next weekend, in a fixture that could see them push toward the top four or slip back toward the relegation zone.
South Cardiff FC 0-1 Singleton Strikers
Singleton Strikers secured a professional 1-0 victory over South Cardiff FC at Ulinga Oval, with a second-half header proving the difference between the two sides.
The result moves the Strikers into fifth place, firmly within touching distance of the promotion play-off spots.
The opening half was a tight affair, with Singleton controlling large portions of possession but failing to convert their chances.
South Cardiff remained disciplined defensively, ensuring they headed into the sheds on level terms and well within the contest.
The deadlock was broken in the 59th minute through Jagger Wholert.
After a well-worked passage of play that utilised the wide areas, a cross was delivered towards the edge of the penalty area, where Wholert directed a great header into the top corner to give the visitors the lead.
Following the goal, South Cardiff looked to find more creativity in the final third as they pushed for an equaliser.
While the Gunners showed defensive credibility throughout the match, they struggled to carve out many opportunities against a solid Singleton backline.
As the match entered its final stages, Singleton maintained their shape and successfully managed South Cardiff’s late pressure to see out the result.
The defeat sees South Cardiff remain ninth on the table, just one position above the relegation zone.
They face a difficult task next weekend when they travel away to face the new league leaders, Wallsend FC.
Meanwhile, Singleton Strikers will look to carry their momentum against Lake Macquarie City FC at home as they aim to break into the top four.
Wallsend FC 6-3 Toronto Awaba FC
Wallsend FC soar to the top of the HIT106.9 Northern League One table following a high-scoring 6-3 victory over Toronto Awaba FC at The Gardens on Sunday.
In a match that defied defensive expectations, the Red Devils overcame an early scare to assert their dominance and secure the three points.
Toronto Awaba started the contest firing, finding the back of the net in the opening minute through Blake Arthur.
The early breakthrough provided the Stags with a perfect start, but Wallsend eventually settled into the contest and began to control the tempo.
The hosts found their equaliser in the 21st minute when Blake Carter converted a penalty, sparking a period of momentum that saw Cameron Davies put Wallsend 2-1 up.
A second penalty from Carter just before the break ensured the Red Devils headed into the sheds with a two-goal cushion.
Wallsend continued to press their advantage in the second half, with Bailey Ryan extending the lead to 4-1 shortly after the restart.
Toronto showed improvement in the start of the second half, highlighted by an Aiden Webster goal in the 67th minute and a Wallsend own goal late in the piece.
But their defensive struggles allowed the hosts to maintain a comfortable buffer throughout the second half.
Cody Halpin and Mason King added late goals to round out the scoring for Wallsend, ensuring the Red Devils capitalised on their impressive display in the final third.
The result is a significant one for both clubs; for Wallsend, the uncharacteristic defensive showing was overshadowed by their offensive output as they moved to the summit of the league.
For Toronto Awaba, the defeat leaves them at the foot of the table following a difficult start to the campaign.
While their ability to score early and find the net three times away from home is a positive sign, they will be looking to find greater defensive stability when they host New Lambton FC next weekend as they aim to climb out of the relegation spot.
Wallsend will look to maintain their spot at the top when they host South Cardiff FC next weekend to continue their strong start to the season.
