HIT106.9 Northern League One Round Four Review: Motivated Bluebells down Croatia, while Golden Eagles fly high over Gunners

Match of the Round
Newcastle Croatia 3-1 West Wallsend SFC

Newcastle Croatia head coach Joshua Popescu says his side was punished for poor game management as West Wallsend SFC secured their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility.

Despite creating more chances on goal, the hosts were unable to overcome a clinical Bluebells outfit that capitalised on Croatia’s defensive errors.

A scoreless first half saw both sides unable to capitalise on their chances, keeping the contest level until the 59th minute when West Wallsend’s Jarrod Purcell found the breakthrough.

The visitors doubled their lead shortly after when Joshua Williams found the net in the 66th minute, leaving Croatia with a two-goal deficit to chase.

Newcastle Croatia mounted a late comeback, however, opening their scoring in the 90th minute through substitute Ethan Gilmore.

Gilmore scored a spectacular bicycle kick that stands as an early contender for goal of the season.

The comeback appeared certain moments later when Croatia was awarded a penalty.

It was West Wallsends goalkeeper Jake Hamilton, however, who was to save the day, denying Croatia from the spot to ultimately end the hosts' hopes of a late recovery.

Left with no choice but to commit everyone forward in the final moments of stoppage time, Croatia were caught on the counter-attack as substitute Max Cavanagh sealed the result for West Wallsend, making it 3-1 on the night.

Popescu felt the result came down to a lack of discipline in key moments.

"It was a good first half, and I think both teams had chances,” Popescu said.

"But then another defensive error cost us a goal.

“We talked about playing out from the back, but at times we went for a long ball too often. They caught us on the counter at times, and that changed the game."

Popescu noted that while the statistics favoured his side, they failed to translate the chances into points.

"They took their chances, and we didn't.

“That was it, really.

“It’s just our game management.

“We know where we need to improve and we'll be raring again next week, don’t worry.”

West Wallsend will look to build on their first three points of the season when they travel to face New Lambton FC next weekend.

Newcastle Croatia will travel away to Lake Macquarie City FC as they look to correct their recent form.

New Lambton FC 2 - 0 South Cardiff FC

New Lambton FC head coach John Bennis praised the hard work and discipline of his squad as the Golden Eagles secured their second consecutive league victory with a professional 2-0 win over South Cardiff FC at Alder Park on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles' turn in form continued as they controlled large portions of the contest, securing a result that pushes them further up the HIT106.9 Northern League One standings.

The Eagles wasted no time asserting their dominance, opening the scoreline in just the third minute.

Following a well-executed passage of play that carved out an early opening, Chienglet Gum Chienglet saw his initial effort blocked before staying composed to slot home the rebound.

New Lambton continued to dictate the tempo for much of the first half, maintaining possession and limiting South Cardiff’s opportunities to transition into the final third.

South Cardiff responded well after the break, finding their rhythm in the second half and increasing the pressure on the Eagles' backline.

The Gunners created a notable opportunity to level the scores as they searched for an equaliser, making for a closely contested second period.

But the introduction of New Lambton’s substitutes eventually swung the momentum back in the hosts' favour.

The game was all but confirmed in the 77th minute through substitute Jeongbin Kim.

After creating a one-on-one opportunity at the top of the box, Kim cut inside and found the back of the net to put the result beyond doubt.

Bennis was pleased with the consistency shown by his players in managing the different phases of the match.

"It was a good hit out for both teams with some good passages from both sides," Bennis said.

"I thought we started the game really well and were very aggressive.

“South Cardiff came back into the game and made it very competitive, but our subs came on and made a difference to finish it off."

Bennis noted that the result was a testament to the effort the squad had put in during training to meet the competition's competitive nature.

"Every team in this competition is going to be tough, and if you don't turn up, then you probably get beaten," Bennis said.

"It’s a full focus on every match.

“The boys have worked really hard, and they deserve all the credit for the result they’ve produced."

While the defeat stalls South Cardiff’s attempt to build on their previous round’s win, the Gunners showed resilience to stay in the hunt until the closing stages.

They will hope to get points back on the board when they return to Ulinga Oval to face Singleton Strikers next Saturday afternoon.

New Lambton will look to carry the momentum of this win into next week’s home fixture against West Wallsend SFC, where they’ll be looking for their third consecutive league victory.

Cessnock City Hornets 3-0 Toronto Awaba FC

Cessnock City Hornets have moved to the top of the HIT106.9 Northern League One table following a 3-0 victory over Toronto Awaba FC at Turner Park on Saturday.

Despite their midweek exit from the Hahn Australia Cup to West Wallsend SFC, Cessnock’s decision to rotate their squad paid dividends as the Hornets returned to league action with a convincing performance.

The Hornets’ defensive discipline remains the benchmark of the competition, with the side securing another clean sheet.

Cessnock has conceded just once in the league so far this season, with their defensive stability allowing their attacking players to play with freedom and confidence.

This proved to be the case when the hosts took control of the contest through a moment of individual brilliance from Cooper Sargent in the 38th minute.

Striking from 25 yards out, Sargent found the back of the net with a fantastic effort to give Cessnock the lead.

Zac Kronholm then doubled the advantage just before the break with an unbelievable free-kick, a strike of the highest quality that left the keeper with no chance in the 45th minute.

Kronholm took centre stage again in the 63rd minute to put the game beyond reach, finding the net for a second time to extend the lead to 3-0 and finish the game off.

The brace takes his tally to seven goals for the season, moving him to the top of the golden boot race.

The match took a fiery turn mid-way through the second half as both sides were reduced to ten men.

Toronto’s Damon Green was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 66th minute, and just moments later, Cessnock’s Luke Davis was also shown a red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

The dismissals left plenty of space on the pitch for the final twenty minutes, though the scoreline remained unchanged.

While it remains early in the campaign, Toronto have struggled to find consistency in the league, having recorded one win from their opening four fixtures.

After finishing the previous season in second place, the Stags will be eager to rediscover the form that made them title contenders last year.

The road ahead doesn’t get any easier for Toronto, as they prepare to face second-placed Wallsend FC next week.

Cessnock City Hornets will look to defend their position at the summit when they travel away to face Dudley Redhead United next Sunday.

Singleton Strikers 1-1 Wallsend FC

Singleton Strikers and Wallsend FC played out a 1-1 draw at Howe Park on Saturday, with the hosts nearly upsetting the side that entered the round at the top of the table.

Both goals arrived in the final fifteen minutes of a physical contest that saw multiple cautions and a late dismissal.

After a scoreless opening hour, Singleton broke the deadlock in the 74th minute through Jagger Wholert.

Wholert’s free kick took a deflection off the Wallsend wall, wrong-footing the goalkeeper to give the Strikers a 1-0 lead.

The match intensified in the 80th minute when Wallsend substitute Ethan O’Brien was shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

A heavy foul sparked a scuffle between the two teams' sets of players, leaving the visitors a man short for the final ten minutes.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Wallsend continued to press for the equaliser.

They were rewarded in the 90th minute via Cody Halpin.

Receiving the ball outside the box, Halpin cut onto his left foot and struck a driven shot into the bottom corner to rescue a point for the visitors.

While Wallsend entered the fixture looking for all three points, the late equaliser and the attitude shown with 10 men mean they leave Howe Park in positive spirits, having rescued a point.

Singleton will be disappointed to have conceded late and have three points snatched away, but their recent performances have sent a clear message to the rest of the league.

Having lost only one game so far, the Strikers have demonstrated they are a side to be respected.

They are the only team to take points away from the Red Devils, thus far.

Singleton will look to build on their confidence as they shift their focus to next weekend's away fixture against South Cardiff FC at Ulinga Oval.

The Red Devils will prepare to host Toronto Awaba FC next weekend, hoping to continue their undefeated run.

Dudley Redhead United 1-3 Lake Macquarie City FC

Lake Macquarie City FC moved into third place on the HIT106.9 Northern League One table following a 3-1 victory over Dudley Redhead United at Lydon Oval on Saturday.

The Roosters established an early advantage and held firm against a second-half fightback to secure three vital points on the road.

The visitors started the contest firing, finding the back of the net twice within the first 20 minutes.

Defender Isaac Perez opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and Marcus Field doubled the lead shortly after, leaving the hosts trailing 2-0 as they headed into the sheds at half-time looking for answers.

Dudley Redhead responded well after the break and found a way back into the game in the 50th minute through Blayke Reeves.

With the score at 2-1, the hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but despite their increased pressure, they were unable to find a second breakthrough.

As Dudley committed numbers forward, Lake Macquarie took advantage of the space and found a third goal in the 81st minute via Cade Thomson.

The strike effectively ended the contest and ensured the Roosters left Lydon Oval with all three points.

The win sees Lake Macquarie City climb to third in the standings, providing a strong platform ahead of their home fixture against Newcastle Croatia FC next weekend.

Currently sitting in fifth, Dudley will be looking to regain their spot in the top four when they host league leaders Cessnock City Hornets FC.
