HIT106.9 Northern League One Round Nine Preview: Top four race heats up as New Lambton look to nullify the Hornets

Match of the Round

Cessnock City Hornets v New Lambton FC

Turner Park, Saturday 2pm

Cessnock City Hornets head coach Joshua Maguire is preparing his side to host New Lambton FC at Turner Park this Saturday afternoon, in a high-stakes match of the round that features two of the league’s best defences.

Both clubs have conceded just eight goals so far this season, setting up a tight battle between the league's two best defensive records.

The Hornets enter the fixture determined to turn a difficult run of form and break back into the top four.

Cessnock has collected only one win from their last five outings, a stretch compounded by a costly 3-2 defeat against Newcastle Croatia last weekend and a series of squad injuries.

Reflecting on last weekend's narrow loss to Croatia, Maguire felt his side created enough opportunities early on but ultimately paid the price for a late lapse in concentration.

"I thought we started really well in the first half an hour or so," Maguire said.

"We had two or three pretty good chances one-on-one and only converted one of them, so I'm a little bit disappointed with that.”

Returning home will come at a great time for the Hornets, who remain unbeaten at Turner Park so far this season.

Despite their recent dip in form, Maguire is focused on restoring the defensive ability that defined the club's strong start to the year.

"We want to go back to our ways, where we only conceded five goals in the first six games," Maguire said.

"We’re scoring, but we need to go back to that baseline where we only have to score one to win it.

“Our focus is to shore up the defence against a New Lambton side that is coming into form.”

New Lambton travels to Cessnock brimming with confidence following a convincing 3-0 victory over former league leaders Dudley Redhead United.

The Golden Eagles have recently found their footing since joining the Hit106.9 Northern League One, establishing themselves as a major threat in this year's promotion race.

New Lambton head coach John Bennis attributed his side's upward trajectory to gradual consistency rather than overnight success.

"I think it’s a gradual build-up," Bennis said.

"Consistency is key. We’ve had a lot of player turnover, so a lot of the boys haven't played together before.

“We are trying to get some fluency going forward, and we'll just keep building on that. It's a big change for us, and if we can keep building, that’s what we’ll aim to do."

Looking ahead to Saturday, Bennis acknowledged the threats the hosts possess in the front third as well as their home record at Turner Park.

"They've got a lot of mobility up front," Bennis noted.

"They’ve got a couple of handy boys up top that we will have to try and nullify. We’ll have to put in a big performance, especially away from home".

This game comes at an important juncture for both teams as the table starts to take shape at the mid-point of the season.

A victory for New Lambton would secure consecutive wins on the road, solidifying their position in the promotion play-off places while keeping them within touching distance of first place.

For Cessnock, a win would protect their unbeaten home status and draw them level on points with New Lambton inside the top four.

Lake Macquarie City FC v Toronto Awaba FC

Macquarie Field, Saturday 4.30pm

Lake Macquarie City FC welcomes Toronto Awaba FC to Macquarie Field this Saturday afternoon, pitting the league's highest-scoring attack against a visiting side fresh off a breakthrough win.

The Roosters enter the fixture in great form, hunting for their fourth consecutive victory after a dominant 6-1 win over South Cardiff FC.

Lake Macquarie currently possesses the most dangerous frontline in the competition, which was on show against the Gunners last round.

The key difference in their climb up the table, however, has been tightening up at the back, having conceded only one goal in their last three outings.

Another three points on Saturday could see the Roosters break away from the chasing promotion play-off pack and potentially jump to the top of the table.

Toronto Awaba will travel with a much-needed confidence boost after defeating Singleton Strikers 3-0 last weekend.

The result secured their second win of the season and their first clean sheet of the campaign, allowing the Stags to pull themselves out of the relegation spot.

Despite the win, Toronto remains heavily entangled in a tight battle at the bottom of the ladder, sitting level on points with last-placed South Cardiff and just two points behind Singleton.

This fixture will test whether Toronto can back up that performance against one of the league's toughest forward lines to handle.

Taking points from this fixture would show that Toronto can compete with the league's top teams this season and help them build a gap over the bottom of the table.

For Lake Macquarie, a victory keeps their push for promotion on track, maintaining their place in the top four and giving them the potential to climb to the top spot.

South Cardiff FC v West Wallsend SFC

Ulinga Oval, Saturday 6pm

South Cardiff FC hosts West Wallsend SFC at Ulinga Oval this Saturday, with both sides looking to separate themselves from the bottom end of the table following tough losses last weekend.

This is a vital fixture for South Cardiff, who dropped to the bottom of the table for the first time this season after a heavy 6-1 defeat to Lake Macquarie City FC.

Last weekend's blowout was an uncharacteristic result for the Gunners, who had previously avoided being completely played out of a contest this year.

South Cardiff's primary concern remains their efforts in the final third, having scored just six goals so far this season.

The hosts must find form in front of the goal if they are to trouble a dangerous West Wallsend side and begin their climb away from the foot of the table.

West Wallsend travels to Ulinga Oval determined to get back to winning ways after a heartbreaking late defeat in the Wallsend derby.

The Bluebells will be frustrated to have dropped all three points against Wallsend FC, having held a 2-1 lead against a 10-man opposition before letting the game slip in the final 30 minutes.

Despite the loss, West Wallsend has shown a massive upturn in form since losing their opening three games of the season.

Three points for West Wallsend would not only extend their gap over the relegation zone to seven points but also keep them within touching distance of the promotion play-off positions.

For South Cardiff, if they can solve their scoring woes and claim a win, it would help lift them off the canvas at the bottom of the table.

Wallsend FC v Newcastle Croatia

Ladbroke Gardens, Sunday 1pm

League leaders Wallsend FC welcome Newcastle Croatia to Ladbroke Gardens this Sunday, featuring two sides coming off the back of thrilling 3-2 victories.

The Red Devils enter the game full of confidence following their memorable derby performance against West Wallsend SFC.

Overcoming a one-goal deficit while down a man showcased the squad's character and adaptability.

The victory led Wallsend back to the top of the table, rewarding the consistency that has defined their strong start to the season.

The hosts will now prioritise maintaining their defensive discipline at home while channelling the same high energy that has made them a difficult opponent all season.

Bailey Newton will be out due to suspension after he received a straight red card in the derby.

Newcastle Croatia travels to Ladbroke Gardens as one of the competition's most in-form teams, searching for a third consecutive victory.

True to their reputation as the league's entertainers, Croatia’s style of play has produced high-scoring fixtures, with their last five matches alone containing 26 goals.

While tightening their backline remains a key focus to stop leaking goals, Croatia's attacking threat has been more than enough recently to get them over the line.

That attacking threat will face one of its biggest tests of the season, however, as they face the challenge of breaking down an organised title contender.

For Croatia, taking all three points from the league leaders would potentially push them into the promotion play-off spots for the first time this season.

A positive result for Wallsend would help build on their derby win and preserve their status at the top of the table.

Dudley Redhead United v Singleton Strikers

Lydon Oval, Sunday 3pm

Dudley Redhead United hosts Singleton Strikers at Lydon Oval this Sunday, with both teams keen to rebound from convincing 3-0 defeats last weekend.

The hosts will use this fixture to reset mentally after a tough shutout loss to New Lambton FC, which saw them drop from the top of the table.

Despite recent struggles against sides near the top of the table, Dudley has been consistently picking up points against teams in the lower half of the standings.

Returning home gives the squad an immediate chance to rediscover that form.

Securing a win would not only help Dudley protect their position inside the top four from the chasing pack but also potentially see them reclaim top spot if other results fall their way.

Singleton, however, travels to Lydon Oval needing to halt a mid-season decline.

The Strikers have lost their last three matches, a slump characterised by last Saturday's heavy defeat against a Toronto side that started the round at the foot of the table.

After a promising opening month to the campaign, this run of form has seen Singleton fall out of the promotion spots, leaving them just two points above the relegation zone.

They will need to deliver a disciplined 90-minute performance to upset a Dudley side that has proved to be one of the top teams this season.

Goalkeeper Stuart Plant will also be unavailable due to suspension, forcing Singleton to make a change in between the sticks.

Finding three points on the road would provide a bigger buffer from the bottom two, proving Singleton still possesses the quality to compete for a top-four position.

Meanwhile, for Dudley, a win would help restore their winning momentum and keep them in the top four, while pushing them within striking distance of reclaiming the top spot.
