Match of the Round
Toronto Awaba FC v West Wallsend SFC
Lyall Peacock Oval, Sunday 1pm
Toronto Awaba FC head coach Jarrad Hiles admits his side must find their character and resolve as they welcome West Wallsend SFC to Lyall Peacock Oval on Sunday.
The Stags enter the fixture looking to arrest a four-game losing streak, most recently falling 3-0 to New Lambton FC.
While the scoreline suggested a one-sided affair, Hiles noted that his side failed to capitalise on several key opportunities that could have altered the result.
"We had some real big moments in the first half where we just couldn't convert," Hiles said.
"We’re working on being better in front of goal when we create those goal-scoring chances.
“We haven’t performed well, but I don’t think the scorelines in our last two games have been a reflection of the performances."
Defensive stability has been the primary hurdle for Toronto, with the side conceding 12 goals across their last three outings.
Despite recent setbacks, Hiles believes his squad possesses the character needed to navigate their current situation, helped by the return of several core players this weekend.
"We’ve had a few players out with injuries and suspensions, but we just haven't been good enough," Hiles said.
"This week, we’ve got some key players back.
“It’s all about our character and desire now. When things aren't going your way, you have to dig yourself out of it."
While the Stags have shown glimpses of quality, the focus remains on turning those patches of play into a complete 90-minute performance.
"We play some good football in patches, but we just haven't put it together," Hiles said.
"Nothing is just presented to you; you have to go and earn it."
West Wallsend SFC arrives at Lyall Peacock Oval as one of the league's most in-form teams, having secured seven points from their last three matches.
The Bluebells continued to turn their season around last round with a massive 1-0 victory over Cessnock City FC, a result built on the foundation of back-to-back clean sheets.
Bluebells head coach Bailey Cox attributes the shift in form to the squad re-grouping and going back to basics after a difficult opening month.
"Everything is just starting to click," Cox said.
“We only had five or six players from last year's final [promotion/relegation play-off] starting this year, so it just took a little bit to get going."
Despite the disparity in both sides recent form, Cox expects a physical encounter against an opponent that has historically proven to be a difficult match-up for the Bluebells.
"Even though Toronto aren't their usual self at the moment, I’m not expecting it to be easy,” Cox said.
“It’s always a battle with them, and we have players now who played there for many years, so there’s an extra bit of spice in it."
West Wallsend competed in the Hahn Australia Cup on Wednesday night against NPL NNSW side Charlestown Azzurri, falling a respectable 2-0.
Despite the midweek cup defeat, Cox confirmed there are no fitness or fatigue concerns and intends to maintain squad consistency rather than rotate the lineup.
"The boys would rather play a game than train," Cox said.
"We’ve got plenty of time [to recover] before Sunday.
“We'll just do a lighter session than usual, but I’m not expecting [fatigue] to be an issue."
A victory for Toronto would see them narrow the gap on South Cardiff FC, who currently sit just above them in the table, and kick-start their move away from the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, three points for West Wallsend would provide a bigger buffer against Toronto on the table and would help them climb further towards the top four.
Singleton Strikers v Newcastle Croatia
Howe Park, Saturday 2pm
Newcastle Croatia head coach Joshua Popescu says his side is prepared to adopt a new style of play as they travel to Howe Park to face Singleton Strikers on Saturday.
Newcastle Croatia enters the fixture looking to bounce back from a narrow 3-2 defeat against Dudley Redhead United.
Despite the loss, Popescu’s side showed a fighting spirit to claw back from a three-goal deficit, nearly rescuing a point in the final stages of the match.
Reflecting on the performance, Popescu noted that while their attacking output remains high, defensive lapses and set-piece errors have hindered their ability to turn competitive displays into wins.
"We conceded off two set pieces, and it’s sort of been the story of our season; little errors are costing us games," Popescu said.
“We’ve been working on fixing these errors and improving our defensive structure for the past week and a half.”
Croatia has earned a reputation as the league’s entertainers, with their games averaging nearly five goals per game this season.
While their front third has proven effective, Popescu is prepared to shift the team's style to prioritise stability over entertainment.
“We’re going to come out with a new style of play against Singleton,” Popescu said.
“It’s a little bit more stable; we’re trying a different approach to what we’ve been doing.
“We’ve had a week off to reset and think about what we need to do, which I think has helped”
The shift comes at an important time as Croatia looks to pull further away from the relegation spot.
While focusing on their own game, Popescu expects a difficult challenge against a Strikers side that rarely gives anything away at the back.
"Singleton is very well defensively structured, and they haven't conceded many," Popescu noted.
"I’ve been doing a little bit of homework, and we’re going to have to try and break them down in different ways."
Singleton Strikers enters the contest seeking to maintain their position in the top-four hunt following a 1-0 loss to Lake Macquarie City FC.
The Strikers have typically featured in the league’s lowest-scoring affairs, averaging just two goals per match while maintaining one of the competition’s most resilient backlines.
Despite their strong defensive record, Singleton’s primary challenge remains their output in the final third, having only found the net five times across the opening six rounds.
This weekend serves as a test of whether their backline can once again withstand a high-quality attacking side, while becoming a threat at the other end of the park.
Securing three points at home will help Singelton stay within touching distance of the league leaders and potentially see them climb into the top four.
For Croatia, a result at Howe Park would provide the momentum needed to climb into the mid-table and away from the dreaded relegation spot.
Cessnock City Hornets v Wallsend FC
Turner Park, Saturday 4.30pm
Cessnock City Hornets host Wallsend FC at Turner Park this Saturday afternoon, with both sides wanting to prove their previous round defeats were only minor setbacks.
Cessnock City enters the fixture looking to bounce back from a recent dip in form after suffering two consecutive losses, most recently a 1-0 defeat away to West Wallsend SFC.
Despite the recent results, the Hornets still hold the league’s strongest defensive record, having conceded just five goals in six matches.
But their primary challenge will be rediscovering their scoring capabilities. After being held scoreless in back-to-back games, the hosts must find a way to break down a strong Wallsend outfit to maintain their position in the top four.
Wallsend visits Turner Park, determined to leave their 2-1 loss to South Cardiff FC behind them and protect their lead at the top of the table.
The league leaders will, however, take confidence from their midweek Hahn Australia Cup performance against NPL NNSW side Cooks Hill United last week.
Despite a final 3-0 scoreline, Wallsend held Cooks Hill to a 0-0 draw through 90 minutes, ultimately going down in extra time.
While their performance against NPL opposition is a positive indicator of their quality, Wallsend will face a fresher Cessnock side coming off a full two-week break.
With both teams eager to bounce back, this fixture between two of the competition's heavyweights will be both a physical and mental test.
For Cessnock, a win would reignite their promotion charge and prove they can compete with the league's best.
As for Wallsend, three points on the road would silence any doubts following their first loss of the season and reinforce their status as the team to beat in 2026.
Lake Macquarie City FC v New Lambton FC
Macquarie Field, Saturday 4.30pm
A high-stakes battle for the top-four spots takes place at Macquarie Field on Saturday as Lake Macquarie City FC hosts New Lambton FC.
With only a narrow margin separating the two sides, the result of this fixture will have early implications for the upper echelon of the ladder.
Lake Macquarie City enters the contest with added defensive confidence following their clean sheet and win against Singleton Strikers last weekend.
Known for possessing the league’s most high-scoring attack, the Roosters have often been hampered by leaking in too many goals.
Securing their first clean sheet of the season, however, shows a shift in their defensive maturity.
If the hosts can pair their natural scoring threat with this defensive discipline, they will have a great opportunity to leapfrog their opponents on the table.
New Lambton will travel to Macquarie Field in formidable form, having remained undefeated in their last five league outings.
The Eagles cemented their credentials as serious contenders with a clinical 4-0 victory over Toronto Awaba FC last round.
While Lake Macquarie has the league’s best attacking record, New Lambton counters with one of the competition's most successful defensive units.
Their ability to absorb pressure has been one of the major reasons they have continued to climb towards the top of the league since their first-round loss.
For New Lambton, if they can continue their defensive form and maintain a high-scoring Lake Macquarie side, they have every chance of securing the three points and staying within striking distance of the league leaders.
For Lake Macquarie, a victory would provide needed consistency and would establish them as an early promotion/relegation play-off contender.
Dudley Redhead United v South Cardiff FC
Lydon Oval, Sunday 3pm
South Cardiff FC travels to Lydon Oval to take on Dudley Redhead United on Sunday afternoon, riding a wave of momentum following their 2-1 upset over league leaders Wallsend FC.
The Gunners' attitude was on full display as they came from behind to secure the three points, proving their ability to compete with and defend against the competition's top-tier sides.
Despite their recent heroics, the visitors face a major challenge against a Dudley side that is deservedly in second place.
The Gunners will need to replicate their defensive discipline from last weekend if they are to stop a Dudley side that rarely fails to score.
This matchup proved difficult for South Cardiff last season; while they remained competitive in those meetings, they ultimately suffered narrow 2-1 defeats on both occasions.
Dudley enters the fixture following a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Newcastle Croatia, a result that showcased their threat from set-pieces and ability to grind out results in tight contests.
They will also have to manage a quick turnaround after competing in the Hahn Australia Cup midweek.
Facing NPL NNSW outfit Adamstown Rosebud FC on Wednesday night, Dudley ultimately fell 5-2 but showed glimpses of quality to remain competitive until the final whistle.
They will need to ensure fatigue doesn't play a factor against a high-energy South Cardiff side.
The stakes remain high for both clubs as the table starts to take shape, with points becoming an even greater luxury.
A win for South Cardiff would provide the needed breathing room from the relegation zone and earn them a reputation as one of the league's giant-killers.
For Dudley, a win would not only protect their top-four status but potentially see them leapfrog into first place should other results go their way.
