HIT106.9 Northern League One Round Seven Review: Bluebells put five past Stags, while Dudley moves to top spot

Match of the Round
Toronto Awaba FC 2-5 West Wallsend SFC

West Wallsend SFC head coach Bailey Cox was thrilled with his side's first-half performance that provided the basis for a commanding 5-2 victory over Toronto Awaba FC at Lyall Peacock Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The result continues a recent surge for the Bluebells, who have now collected 10 points from their last four fixtures.

Previously one of the league's lowest-scoring sides, West Wallsend found its form in front of goal to climb into sixth place and into the promotion play-off conversation.

The visitors wasted no time asserting themselves, opening the scoring in the third minute through Josh Williams.

The momentum stayed with West Wallsend as Jarrod Purcell doubled the lead in the 21st minute after being played through by Spencer Clarke.

Toronto managed to pull one back against the run of play in the 37th minute when Damon Green’s ball in behind the defence found Connor Fitzpatrick, who squared it for Luke Callen to finish.

But any hopes of a Stags comeback were immediately dampened when Bailey Stoimenoff drove from defence into the box, winning a penalty, which Purcell converted to make it 3-1 at the break.

The second half saw a more spirited effort from the hosts, and they moved within striking distance in the 69th minute when Aiden Webster headed home a Zane Winslade delivery.

But West Wallsend responded immediately to kill the contest. Substitute Jake Bower struck past the keeper to make it 4-2, before Purcell completed his hat-trick with a header from a well-worked set piece to seal the 5-2 victory.

Cox admitted that while the full 90 minutes weren't perfect, the opening 45 minutes were a season high for the squad.

"I wouldn't say it was a full 90-minute performance, but that first half was really good. Probably the best we've put together this year," Cox said.

"We probably missed a few chances to bury the game early, but we worked well together; everyone played well as a team.”

Cox noted that his side was fully aware of the challenge Toronto posed and the importance of maintaining their recent run of form.

"We knew we had to be up for it today because we knew they’d be hungry for a win," Cox said.

"We had to make sure we kept our own momentum going.

“We’ve been rolling lately, and we’re just getting better and better."

For Toronto Awaba, it was another afternoon to forget as the result marked their fifth consecutive defeat.

Head coach Jarrad Hiles did not mince words regarding his side's opening half, describing it as a lapse in their competitive desire.

"It was a tale of two halves,” Hiles said.

“That first half was embarrassing and not up to standard. There was a huge lack of effort and not wanting to compete.

"The main problem was just the attitude and the desire to work hard.

“We’ve built our game over the years on doing the dirty work and competing, but for whatever reason, we weren't ready to go and were very flat.

"We dominated large parts of the second half and felt like we were getting back into the game at 3-2, but then we conceded again.”

Hiles emphasised that a major shift in mentality is needed if the Stags are to salvage their season.

“There is a lot of work to be done,” Hiles said.

“If your head's not in the game and you aren't willing to put your body on the line, you aren't going to get very far.

“We need some soul searching and a few home truths told. We definitely will look for a reaction against Singleton [next round]."

The Stags must now address their defensive fragility, having conceded an average of three goals per game so far this season.

They will look for a much better performance when they host Singleton Strikers on Saturday.

For West Wallsend, they will take their red-hot form into a massive high-stakes derby against local rivals Wallsend FC on Sunday.

Singleton Strikers 2-3 Newcastle Croatia

Newcastle Croatia head coach Joshua Popescu was full of praise for his side’s ability to fight back into the game as they overcame a two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over Singleton Strikers at Howe Park on Saturday.

The result marks a significant shift in the race for the promotion/relegation play-off standings, with Croatia leapfrogging their opponents while once again living up to their reputation as the league’s entertainers.

Croatia struggled to find their rhythm early on, allowing Singleton to capitalise as the more settled side during the opening 45 minutes.

Singleton started the game firing, with Regan Fitzpatrick opening the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing off a well-worked team goal to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

Fitzpatrick doubled his tally in the 42nd minute, showing great composure to go around the keeper and dribble the ball into the net, sending the Strikers into the sheds with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.

But the second half saw a complete shift in momentum, as the visitors moved to a more aggressive attacking style.

Croatia began their fightback in the 62nd minute when a dangerous delivery into the box was met by Wesley Pryce, who touched it down nicely and volleyed it home to make it 2-1.

Just four minutes later, Croatia found their equaliser through Jake McGuinness, who tucked away another cross to level the scoring.

The dramatic conclusion arrived in the 89th minute when Beau McDonald found space out wide before driving a ball into the area for Cody Carroll, who finished off the play to secure the win.

"The second half, we just came out firing," Popescu said.

"We went back to playing what we know best.

“It’s a huge three points for us, and it pushes us away from that relegation zone and helps us look at the play-off spots."

Popescu was particularly impressed by the way his side broke down a Singleton backline that has been among the best in the competition.

"To score three goals in 45 minutes against one of the best defences in the league is a credit to the boys," Popescu said.

"The boys showed good character today.

“We’ve proved we can score goals, and since we’ve started at Croatia, we've always been a side that can come back from those positions."

The defeat will be a huge disappointment for Singleton, marking a rare occasion where they conceded three goals in a single fixture.

While their first-half performance was positive, their inability to manage the game in the final half-hour proved costly.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Popescu is eager for his side to maintain this intensity from the opening whistle.

"We want to bring that same energy to the first half next week and hopefully capitalise on that," Popescu said.

"We’ll be pushing until the 90th minute, that’s for sure."

Singleton Strikers will look to bounce back when they travel to face Toronto Awaba on Saturday.

Newcastle Croatia will return home on Sunday to host Cessnock City Hornets, looking to build on their newfound momentum.

Cessnock City Hornets 2-2 Wallsend FC

Cessnock City Hornets and Wallsend FC shared the points in a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Turner Park on Saturday afternoon.

While the result sees Wallsend slip into second place following a slight drop-off in form, the Hornets will view the comeback as a positive step toward stabilising their position within the top four.

Wallsend established an early stranglehold on the match, finding the back of the net in the 14th minute through Cody Halpin.

The visitors' momentum continued to build, polishing off their strong start when Blake Carter converted from the spot in the 30th minute to double the lead.

Despite the two-goal deficit, Cessnock responded quickly to keep themselves in the contest.

Callum Bower provided a crucial lifeline just five minutes later, pulling a goal back to ensure the Hornets went into half-time trailing by only one.

The hosts completed the recovery in the 58th minute through Zac Kronholm, marking his eighth goal of the campaign.

Both sides searched for a winner in the final half-hour, but they ultimately cancelled each other out defensively to ensure the spoils were shared.

Wallsend will be frustrated to have let a winning position slip, having now secured one point from their last two outings.

Nevertheless, they remain strong title contenders as they look to rediscover the consistency that defined their perfect start to the season.

For Cessnock, the draw stops their recent slump in form and ensures they remain in the promotion playoff places.

They will look to build on this result when they travel away to face Newcastle Croatia on Sunday.

Wallsend FC will begin preparing for a highly anticipated local derby against West Wallsend SFC on Sunday.

Lake Macquarie City FC 2-0 New Lambton FC

Lake Macquarie City FC continued their rise up the table with a statement 2-0 victory over New Lambton FC at Macquarie Field on Saturday afternoon.

The result sees the Roosters climb into third place, while New Lambton slips to fifth following their second defeat of the campaign.

The match remained a tense, scoreless deadlock for the majority of the afternoon as both sides struggled to find a breakthrough.

But Lake Macquarie eventually found a way through the visitors' defence, scoring two quick consecutive goals late in the second half to secure the points.

Carter Smith broke the stalemate in the 77th minute, finding the net to reach an impressive 10 goals in just seven games this season.

The Roosters doubled their advantage only two minutes later when substitute Callum Stalling struck in the 79th minute, effectively ending any chance of a New Lambton comeback.

A highlight for Lake Macquarie was securing their second consecutive clean sheet. A notable feat for a side that failed to record a single shutout during the previous season.

After struggling with defensive consistency in the opening rounds, the Roosters appear to have resolved their backline issues, providing a solid foundation for their current run of form.

For New Lambton, the loss marks a dip in what has otherwise been a strong start to the season.

While the result serves as a reminder of the league's competitive nature, New Lambton will look to regroup quickly to ensure this minor slump does not derail their promotion ambitions.

They will look to rectify this result when they return home on Saturday to host Dudley Redhead United in a vital encounter for both sides, with a place in the top four on the line.

For Lake Macquarie City, the focus now shifts to their away fixture against South Cardiff FC on Saturday, where they will aim to extend their defensive and two-game winning streak.

Dudley Redhead United 2-1 South Cardiff FC

Dudley Redhead United ascended to the top of the Hit106.9 Northern League One table for the first time in the club's history following a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Cardiff FC at Lydon Oval.

The hosts opened the scoring early, with Kye Mclean finding the net in the seventh minute to give Dudley the perfect start.

But South Cardiff proved they won't back down against the league’s top sides, echoing their performance against Wallsend FC last round.

The Gunners fought back to level the scoring in the 41st minute through Jemila Oko, ensuring the teams went into the break at 1-1.

The second half remained a tight affair as the Gunners produced a strong performance against their high-flying opponents.

The deadlock was finally broken in the dying stages when Blayke Reeves was brought down by the South Cardiff goalkeeper while through on goal.

Reeves composed himself to convert the resulting 90th-minute penalty, securing Dudley’s third consecutive win.

While the result keeps Dudley in peak form, South Cardiff will be frustrated to leave without a point after pushing one of the competition's heavyweights to the wire.

The defeat leaves the Gunners just three points clear of the relegation zone.

They will look to further distance themselves from the relegation zone on Saturday when they host Lake Macquarie City FC.

Dudley will face a significant test of their title credentials on Saturday when they travel to face New Lambton FC.
