Northern NSW Football will launch a new era of representative football in October with the inaugural Northern NSW Football All-Stars Challenge.
The annual event will see men's and women's Northern NSW representative teams take on an invited opponent each year, with Capital Football confirmed as the inaugural challengers.
The 2026 NNSWF All-Stars Challenge will take place at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Saturday 10 October.
The concept builds on the successful return of representative football to the region last season, when Northern NSW All-Stars teams faced the Newcastle Jets in front of strong community support.
Umbro Northern NSW Men’s and Cardiff Motor Group Northern NSW Women’s representative sides will also make the trip south to take on Capital Football representative teams in 2027 as part of a two-year reciprocal agreement.
NNSWF CEO Peter Haynes said the NNSWF All-Stars Challenge would become a marquee event on the football calendar.
"The return of representative football last year showed there is a genuine appetite for these matches from players, coaches and supporters," Haynes said.
"With the Newcastle Jets unavailable this year due to their pre-season schedule and upcoming AFC Champions League Elite campaign, the NNSWF All-Stars Challenge builds on the momentum from last year’s representative matches as we look to create an annual showcase for the best players in our region.
“We expect the NNSWF All-Stars Challenge concept will become a standout event for football in northern NSW. It also gives us the opportunity to strengthen relationships with other member federations through high-quality competition.
“We've developed an excellent relationship with Capital Football. We’re excited to welcome Capital Football as our inaugural opponents and look forward reciprocating with an away trip to the nation’s capital next year.”
NNSWF Technical Director Ryan Doidge said the concept would provide an important opportunity for the region's leading players.
"Representative football plays an important role in allowing our players the chance to showcase themselves and to test themselves against quality opposition," Doidge said.
"The NNSWF All-Stars Challenge recognises the talent within northern NSW while providing players and coaches with a meaningful representative experience.
“The key for us with this concept was to create meaningful, competitive representative football and we're looking forward to seeing the best players from our competitions represent our region with pride."
Capital Football CEO Samantha Farrow said the opportunity was an exciting addition to the representative football calendar and reflected the strong relationship between the two member federations.

Fans will also enjoy a curtain-raiser before the men’s and women’s representative matches between the HIT106.9 Northern League One All-Stars and the Zone Football League All-Stars.
As well as giving players from HIT106.9 Northern League One a chance to represent their clubs and their league for the first time, the match will also showcase the strength and depth of Hunter community football with the inclusion of an inaugural Zone Football League representative side.
Newcastle Football General Manager Chris Brain was excited by the inclusion of the HIT106.9 Northern League One All-Stars against the Zone Football League All-Stars match on the schedule and stoked the fires of friendly competition.
“The opportunity for a select Zone Football League All-Stars squad, representing all three divisions, to play in a competitive game against the best of HIT106.9 Northern League One is an attractive curtain raiser to the All-Stars Challenge calendar and a representative reward for players at community level,” Brain said.
“The long-held debate around the Zone Football League being better than HIT106.9 Northern League One finally has a chance to play out.”
