NNSWF Regional Super League Women’s Round Two Review: Urunga outclass Armidale, while Rangers decimate Port United

Match of the Round
Urunga FC 8-0 Armidale City Westside

Urunga FC coach Trevor Martin says he has no complaints after their 8-0 win over Armidale City Westside at Urunga Recreational Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

The home side was too strong for Armidale and dashed their hopes of securing back-to-back wins in the league.

Urunga opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Eibhlin Kealy-Banks whipped the ball at the edge of the penalty area into the back of the net.

Kealy-Banks doubled her side’s advantage two minutes later when Breanna Martin threaded the ball through Armidale’s defence for Kealy-Banks to slot the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

In the 17th minute, Kate Jandzio-Fry extended her side’s lead again after she brought the ball down inside the penalty area, turned and struck it past the reach of goalkeeper Abby Parker.

Urunga took the scoreline to 4-0 in the 39th minute after Jandizo-Fry broke through the line of defence and powered down the pitch towards goal but crossed the ball to Ella Meakins, who tapped the ball into the back of the net.

The home side took the comfortable lead into the sheds at the half-time break and kept their intensity up for the second 45 minutes.

Jandizo-Fry netted her second of the afternoon 16 seconds into the second half after she got in behind Armidale's defenders once again and sliced the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.

In the 55th minute, Kealy-Banks secured a hat-trick after she received a long cross unmarked in front of goal and smashed it hard and low into the goal.

Jandizo-Fry then secured her own hat-trick after a scrappy tap-in in the 70th minute before she put the cherry on top 10 minutes later when she found herself unmarked inside the penalty area and struck the ball into the back of the net to take the final score to 8-0.

Martin was thrilled with his side’s performance to secure a big three points.

“It was what we decided we wanted to do,” Martin said.

“No complaints, we were happy with the game and result.

“It was a good result for us.

“There were certain aspects of the game that we changed strategically. We had people in different positions.

“We were up for it. The girls were keen to prove a point.

“We went out there with a can-do attitude.

“The result helps with the confidence in moving forward.

“It was a nice day. The weather, the pitch and playing at home was nice it made it more special.”

Armidale’s captain and assistant coach Kathleen Fleming said despite the result, her side took a lot from playing against a high-quality football team.

“It was a really good game and we really enjoyed it,” Flemming said.

“We had a couple of things not go our way but Urunga were polished. It was a good learning experience.

“They [Urunga] controlled the game. We knew that we had to be at the top of our game and we weren’t.

“If we could play against them every week, we would do it for the experience.

“There some good things to take out of it.”

Armidale have slipped down to second on the table and will be eager to turn things around and cement their finals chances when they return home to Harris Park to take on Lake Cathie FC in round three on July 12.

The win has shot Urunga to the top of the table and will hope to maintain their league leader status position when they face Lake Cathie FC at home in their rescheduled round one fixture before they face Oxley Vale Attunga at Gipps Street Sporting Fields on July 12 in round three.
