Northern NSW Football will strengthen its youth boys' competition pathway in 2027 through an evolution of its Premier Youth League Boys playing structure and the expansion of its elite junior and youth competitions.
The changes will see a transition to a permanent three-division model for the PYL Boys competition while also welcoming three additional clubs into the premier boys' pathway.
NNSWF Technical Director Ryan Doidge said the changes reflected NNSWF’s commitment to creating the best possible development environments for players while supporting the continued growth of football across northern NSW.
“This is an evolution of our boys youth competitions rather than a rebuild. We’ve engaged in a considerable amount of consultation, listened to feedback and mapped that feedback against the competition’s purpose,” Doidge said.
"Our goal is to provide players with an environment that is challenging and enhances development opportunities.
"The new PYL Boys competition structure will increase the number of competitive matches throughout the season, which is a large component of player development.
"While also maintaining the promotion and relegation model during and at the conclusion of the season, it provides opportunities for clubs to move up and down the competition pyramid, which ensures more like v like matches across the entire season."
PYL BOYS STRUCTURAL CHANGES
The 2027 season will operate as a transition year to the new competition structure.
The competition will begin under the existing two-division format before splitting into three divisions at the halfway point. From that point, the competition will permanently transition to three divisions:
- PYL Boys 1
- PYL Boys 2
- PYL Boys 3
The three-division structure will become the permanent format for the competition from the start of the 2028 season.
Promotion and relegation will continue to be determined through Club Championship results.
At the halfway point of each season, one club will be promoted and one club relegated between PYL Boys 1 and PYL Boys 2, with the same movement occurring between PYL Boys 2 and PYL Boys 3.
At the end of each season, the same promotion/relegation process will occur again to determine the starting divisions for the following season.
The changes are a result of genuine and lengthy consultation with clubs and stakeholders.
PYL + JDL BOYS EXPANSION
NNSWF has also expanded its premier boys' competition pathway through the admission of three additional clubs as part of its annual premier competitions application process.
The NNSWF Board of Directors have endorsed a number of successful applications to grow its premier competitions, unlocking new geographical regions throughout, making sure this level of football is accessible to more regions.
South Maitland FC have been accepted to the Junior Development League Boys and Premier Youth League Boys competitions.
Maitland Junior FC have been accepted to the JDL Boys competition.
Newcastle Croatia have been accepted to the PYL Boys competition.
The expansion provides more players and coaches with access to northern NSW's premier boys development pathway while strengthening elite football opportunities across the region.
The competition restructure and club expansion reinforce NNSWF's commitment to delivering a competitive, sustainable and development-focused competition pathway for boys' football throughout northern NSW.
NNSWF Premier Competitions Lead Thom Kane said the new structure would improve the quality of competition across all divisions while creating a sustainable model for future growth.
“We have consulted our clubs and this is a result of us listening to feedback from a range of stakeholders,” Kane said.
"The evolution to a three division competition structure allows us to simplify the competition pathway while at the same time enhancing development environments and better aligning clubs of similar strength throughout the season, leading to more competitive matches and stronger development outcomes for players.
“We’ve also worked hard to find a more efficient approach to the length of the season, which will see PYL Boys clubs maintain the amount of competitive games across a shorter season length in 2027 and beyond.
"Importantly we have retained the promotion and relegation system that clubs value, providing a clear pathway for clubs to progress through the PYL divisions.
"Combined with the expansion of our premier competitions, these changes position the PYL Boys competition for long-term growth and success."
