NPL Men’s NNSW Round 11 Review: Jaffas fly seven past Rosebuds, while Cookers win in late comeback

Match of the Round
Edgeworth FC v Maitland FC

This match was postponed due to wet weather conditions.

Lambton Jaffas 7-0 Adamstown Rosebud

Lambton Jaffas coach David Tanchevski was really pleased for his side to continue their season undefeated after a dominant 7-0 victory over Adamstown Rosebud FC at Authur Edden Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The league leaders have achieved 19 straight wins and 21 games undefeated in the NPL Men’s NNSW competition.

Kale Bradbery opened the scoring in the 31st minute after James Oates flung the ball across the face of the goal for Bradbery to strike on the volley into the back of the net.

Jaffas doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time when they were awarded a penalty for a handball inside the penalty area. Bradbery stepped up to the spot and converted the kick.

Matthew Buettner and Benjamin Hay put their names on the scoresheet in the 53rd and 56th minutes to take the score to 4-0.

Substitute Scott Pettit hit the back of the net in the 63rd minute after he tapped in a cross to extend Jaffas’ lead again before Bradbery secured his hat-trick in the 80th minute.

Michael Kantarovski put the cherry on top for the Jaffas in the 87th minute to take the final score to 7-0.

Tanchevski was thrilled for his side to continue their winning streak and praised his side’s mentality to not get complacent.

“I was really happy with the win,” Tanchevski said.

“We started a little slow and I think it will happen against most teams that come out at a high intensity.

“I think our last two performances have been up to where I know we can be.

“We have had a pretty good run.

“I think the mentality is top class from our boys. It is hard to get up for games when you are at the top of the table.”

The squad has seen the return of multiple players from injury in recent weeks which has helped to further boost the side.

“I think having Matthew Cahill come into the front line has given us dimensions in our attack,” Tanchevski said.

“We will also get Samuel Webb and Shaun Pratt back into the group which makes it feel like we are more complete.

“It definitely helps to have players return from injury so that we can have more options, gives us more depth and rest players when needed.

“Everyone has talked about how we have such a deep squad but the truth we haven’t had that in the first round.”

Jaffas continue their rein at the top of the table and are six points clear of Broadmeadow Magic in second position. They will look to go again when they host Lake Macquarie City FC next weekend.

Adamstown continues to sit at the bottom of the table with two points. Daniel Dawkins will be desperate for his side to bounce back next week when they face Broadmeadow Magic.

Weston Workers FC 1-2 Cooks Hill United

Cooks Hill United coach Chris Zoricich was pleased with his side’s effort to launch a late comeback to secure three points against Weston Workers FC with a 2-1 win at Rockwell Automation Park on Sunday afternoon.

It was an even matchup between the two sides for 90-plus minutes, but Chris Zoricich’s side was able to fight back from going behind and come out on top.

The two teams created multiple opportunities in the first half but went into the sheds at the break still deadlocked at 0-0.

The Bears broke ahead minutes after the whistle blew to start the second half after they were awarded a penalty when Christopher Hatfield was brought down inside the penalty area by Alexander Hilton.

Hatfield stepped up to convert his own penalty, which he did with a powerful shot that sent goalkeeper Daniel Eisenhauer the wrong way.

But Cooks Hill was given the opportunity to equalise in the 78th minute after they were awarded a penalty.

Matthew Berrigan was brought down by Weston goalkeeper Gerard Roebuck after he came screaming off his line to clear the ball and collected Berrigan instead. Berrigan converted his own penalty which helped to shift momentum Cooks Hill’s way.

It looked like the points would be shared as the game went into stoppage time but Cooks Hill had other ideas.

The visitors stunned the home side as they went 2-1 ahead in the 91st minute with an excellent volleyed strike from Berrigan.

Things went from bad to worse for Weston when Angelo Calfo was given a red card for a late last-man tackle on Cody Nancarrow in the 93rd minute.

Zoricich was impressed with how his side came from behind to grind out a crucial result.

“I’m really happy to get the three points which was really needed,” Zoricich said.

“Really pleased with the boy's effort that they put in.

“It wasn’t the best that we have played recently but for them to dig in and get the results was great.

“We spoke about how we did not want to concede goals in the first half. We were in the game but unfortunately did go behind which was disappointing.

“I was most impressed with our ability to stay in the game and keep going until the last minute.”

The Bears remain in sixth position but will be desperate to find some consistency and return to the winners’ circle when they host Edgeworth FC next weekend.

Cooks Hill also have not moved positions on the table as they sit ninth but have extended the gap between them and the bottom three teams out to four points. They will hope to secure back-to-back victories when they travel to Darling Street Oval to face Newcastle Olympic

Broadmeadow Magic 5-1 New Lambton FC

Broadmeadow Magic made it two from two after a convincing 5-1 victory over New Lambton FC at Magic Park on Friday night.

Magic thought they had opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but the goal was ruled offside.

But they finally got on the scoreboard through Thomas Beecham in the 20th minute after he nudged the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick.

The Golden Eagles thought they had got themselves level but the goal was also ruled offside by the match officials.

Vice-captain Jayden Stewardson doubled Magic’s lead minutes before half time after Riley Smith saw him unmarked inside the penalty area and cut the ball across goal for the striker to slice the ball into the back of the goal.

Bailey Wells returned in style after his five-match suspension was suspended last week and got his name on the scoresheet in the 69th minute. He used his pace to break past his defenders and hit the ball low and hard into the back of the net.

William Ingram extended the scoreline to 4-0 in the 75th minute before Wells netted his second of the night.

New Lambton clawed one back in the 87th minute with an impressive strike from Josh Piddington but the damage was done and Magic secured all three points.

Magic’s men continue to sit second on the table, six points away from league leaders Lambton Jaffas and will look to make it three on the trot when they travel to Adamstown Oval next weekend to face Adamstown Rosebud FC.

New Lambton is tenth on the table and will look to regroup to go again when they return home to Alder Park to host third-placed Charlestown Azzurri.

Charlestown Azzurri 3-0 Valentine FC

Charlestown sealed back-to-back wins after a strong 3-0 victory over Valentine FC on Sunday afternoon.

Jarryd Sutherland opened the scoring at Lisle Carr Oval in the 31st minute when he found the ball at his feet unmarked inside the penalty area and tapped the ball into the back of the net.

The Blues doubled their advantage two minutes later after Rene Ferguson was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Sutherland took the free kick which he curled into a sea of blue and orange shirts. But Ferguson rose the highest and headed the ball into the goal to take the score to 2-0.

Ty Cousins sealed the three points for Azzurri in the 68th minute after goalkeeper Brodie Volkeine was unable to secure the ball in a high cross. The ball spilled to Cousins, who chested it and struck it into the empty net.

The Blues remain in third position on the table, three points behind Broadmeadow Magic in second and will look to continue their momentum when they travel to Alder Park to face New Lambton FC next week.

Valentine has retained their position in fourth on the table but has slipped further away from the top three sides. Adam Hughes will hope his side can bounce back from their third consecutive loss when they return home to host Maitland FC.
