Broadmeadow Magic 5-2 Cooks Hill United

Broadmeadow Magic came from behind to secure a 5-2 victory over Cooks Hill United at Magic Park on Friday night.

The win was a crucial one for Magic’s men in their mission to hunt down league leaders Lambton Jaffas for top spot.

Cooks Hill opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Brock Beveridge hit the ball on the volley from a free kick past goalkeeper Lewis Alvarez.

Magic hit back in the 19th minute with a spectacular strike from Bailey Wells. A Cooks Hill defender blocked a cross from Jayden Stewardson, which sent the ball high into the sky. As the ball fell back down Wells struck it on the volley and the ball curled past the reach of goalkeeper Samuel Esquilant and into the back of the net.

Stewardson edged his side ahead in the 65th minute after they were awarded a penalty. Wells and Esquillant collided inside the penalty area as the two players sprinted to win the ball. The call went against the Cooks Hill keeper and Stewardson converted from the spot.

But the visitors levelled the score three minutes later with a superb hit from Beveridge. The attacker found himself with the ball at the right corner of the pitch before he wrongfooted his defender and curled the ball from outside the penalty area into the top left corner of the net.

Magic struck again to take the lead for the second time in the match in the 72nd minute thanks to substitute Sam Donnellan, who tapped the ball in from a cutback ball.

Another goal three minutes later from another wonder strike from Wells helped to set up the home side’s victory.

Riley Smith put the cherry on top for Broadmeadow with the 5th and final goal for the side to secure a crucial three points for their 2024 campaign.

The win sees Magic close the gap between them and Jaffas to four points and extend their gap from Charlestown Azzurri to five points.

Jim Cresnar and his side will look to continue their winning ways when they host Maitland FC on Tuesday night in their round eight rescheduled fixture before they face Alstonville FC in round six of the Australia Cup on Saturday.

Cooks Hill will be disappointed with the loss as they continue to sit ninth on the table with nine points. But they will hope to turn things around when they host Lake Macquarie City FC in their round eight catch-up match on Friday night.
