Match of the Round
Maitland FC 1-0 Broadmeadow Magic
Broadmeadow Magic head coach Jim Cesnar praised his side’s ability to “stand up” in key moments, as the defending champions pulled off one of the biggest wins of their season, prevailing 1-0 over a firing Maitland FC at Cooks Square Park on Saturday.
Both sides began with intent in a hard-fought midfield battle, with the Magpies building patiently down the flanks while the visitors remained well organised and looked to strike on the counter.
Magic's structure proved effective, with the visitors creating the better chances in the opening half through patient build-up play.
A Magic corner two minutes before half-time produced the best chance to break the deadlock, with the ball finding the back of the net before the goal was ruled out after a foul off the ball. The sides went into the break locked at 0-0.
With the contest taking on a tense edge after the break, it became a matter of who would seize the moment, and Broadmeadow did just that.
Just four minutes into the second half, striker Haris Zeb found the breakthrough. Driving towards the box in the 49th minute, Zeb unleashed a low strike from distance that skipped beyond goalkeeper Taylor Pate and into the bottom corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Maitland responded by lifting their attacking intensity, peppering the Magic goal, while the visitors continued to threaten on the counter. Magic came close to doubling their advantage in the 76th minute, only for Pate to produce a brilliant save.
The tempo lifted again in the closing stages as Maitland threw numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Their best opportunity arrived in the 88th minute, when Daniel McFarlane had two efforts from a corner denied by Will Ingram and then the woodwork.
Tempers finally boiled over in stoppage time, with Maitland’s Cameron Jessup shown a red card in a costly blow for the hosts.
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Maitland continued to press. Deep into the ninth minute of stoppage time, Luke Corcoran had one final chance to snatch an equaliser, but his effort sailed over the bar, sealing a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Magic.
Cresnar was proud of the fight shown with Broadmeadow now only needing three more points to take an unassailable lead and claim the 2026 premiership.
“It's a very, very important result for us,” Cresnar said.
“Very proud of their efforts, the commitment, the desire to win a game of football; that's what it came down to.
“The level of dedication to be able to go, ‘what do you need to change a game of football?’ That's probably where I was trying to get at the players [during the break], ‘who's going to stand up for this game?’
“[Now], it's just game by game. It's an important game [next week against Cooks Hill United].”
It proved a difficult end to a tough week for Maitland head coach Adam Hughes, his side also going down 2-1 in similarly heartbreaking fashion to Fremantle City in the Hahn Australia Cup on Wednesday.
But with his side set for the Men’s State Cup and several catch-up fixtures, Hughes knows there is plenty of time for his side to bounce back.
“I thought if we’d walked away with a draw there it would have probably been a fair result for the match itself today,” Hughes said.
“That's football. It was probably a similar type of feeling to Wednesday night as well, where we had our opportunities. We lose together as a group, we win together as a group.
“It was evident that the capacities are there. It's finding those moments, just being confident in their own abilities. That's what we'll work on. It's just a bit of mentality stuff within the group.
“Everything's there. The football's there.”
Magic will play Cooks Hill on Friday night in their round 19 catch-up match, while Maitland will prepare for the Men’s State Cup fixture against Weston Bears on Saturday.
Cooks Hill United 1-0 Lambton Jaffas
Cooks Hill United head coach Jamie Dunning said his focus remained on his side's performances rather than the finals permutations, despite Saturday's historic 1-0 victory over Lambton Jaffas at Fearnley Dawes Athletics Field.
Lambton started strongly, pinning Cooks Hill deep in their own half and asking plenty of early questions, registering six shots and earning three corners.
The hosts weathered the early pressure without conceding and gradually worked their way into the contest, creating a handful of opportunities late in the half, though neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval.
Cooks Hill emerged after the break with greater intensity and began to assert themselves in attack.
Their pressure paid off in the 55th minute when Liam Wilson's strong build-up play set up Stephen Hoyle, who produced a moment of individual brilliance to break the deadlock.
The goal opened the game up, with the Jaffas pushing forward in search of an equaliser while Cooks Hill looked to exploit the space and control territory.
Both sides created opportunities in an entertaining second half, with Lambton registering nine shots after the break and Cooks Hill responding with 10 of their own. Despite four minutes of stoppage time, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser as Cooks Hill held on for a crucial 1-0 victory.
It proved an historic occasion for the hosts, marking the first time in the club’s history that they had ever defeated the Jaffas.
The result sees Cooks Hill now the last side in the chasing pack with a realistic shot of making finals, briefly climbing above Edgeworth into fifth place before the Eagles prevailed on Sunday against Olympic.
But with Edgeworth slated for two catch-up games against Charlestown Azzurri and Belmont Swansea United, Dunning knows his side needs to keep winning, their match next week against Broadmeadow Magic even more critical.
“I think it's the first time the club [has] ever beat Jaffas. They've had a few draws, but mainly losses. That was pleasing to get our first ever win against them,” Dunning said.
“We're obviously outside chances [for finals], but we've just got to keep giving ourselves the best chance we possibly can.
“We've never got too far in front of ourselves, and I think that's really important. When you start picking up points, you don't look any further than the next game, and it's always been the next game.
“I don't really look at the league table and I haven't all season. But I'm sure in a couple of weeks' time, if it's close to it, I will be looking at the other sides.
“We can only control what we can control. We're going to try and win every single game. If you can get a result against Magic, any result, a draw, three points, that stands us in good stead for the next two weeks.”
Cooks Hill will have a round 19 catch-up game on Friday against Broadmeadow Magic, while the Jaffas will have a break during the Men’s State Cup weekend before facing Belmont Swansea United in the penultimate round of the regular season.
Valentine FC 1-0 Charlestown Azzurri
Valentine FC took a crucial step towards locking in their place for the 2027 NPL Men's NNSW season, edging Charlestown Azzurri 1-0 at Croudace Bay Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The match carried major significance for the Blues, who needed a victory to climb off the bottom of the table and escape the relegation zone. Both sides began evenly, moving the ball well and creating early opportunities.
Valentine gradually gained control of territory and looked the more threatening side late in the half, but Charlestown continued to build from deep, with neither side able to find a breakthrough before the interval.
With the sun setting over Lake Macquarie, the Phoenix weathered several early midfield battles after the restart and began to pose a greater threat as the match moved beyond the hour mark.
As the tempo lifted, a defensive lapse from Reece Papadimitiros proved costly in the 65th minute. The ball fell to midfielder Eli Hunt, who combined with advancing striker Kurtis White to create a two-on-one opportunity against Blues goalkeeper Samuel Esquilant.
It proved an easy finish for White, and despite some valiant efforts from the Blues to up the tempo, the hosts ensured Charlestown couldn’t build up significant pressure on goal, getting over the line after seven minutes of stoppage time.
The win marks Valentine’s sixth and first consecutive three-pointer of the season, climbing eight points clear of the relegation zone to sit equal with Lambton Jaffas.
For Charlestown, the loss could prove catastrophic, now needing to produce results against top five teams in their remaining three fixtures to have any hope of getting out of the automatic relegation position, the Kahibah FC win only adding to the hill the Blues have to climb.
Valentine will travel to face Adamstown Rosebud on Saturday in their round 19 catch-up game, while Charlestown will have a much-needed week off before they face Maitland FC in round 20, with matches against Edgeworth Eagles and Broadmeadow Magic to round off their season.
Edgeworth Eagles 2-0 Newcastle Olympic
Edgeworth Eagles have maintained their top five position on the table, producing a composed performance at home to defeat Newcastle Olympic 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Fresh off a 5-2 midweek win over Belmont Swansea United in their round 19 catch-up fixture, the visitors took their time settling into the contest. Having played their first match in more than three weeks, Edgeworth focused on regaining their structure and controlling territory early as they looked to apply pressure.
Their patience was rewarded in the 18th minute, when midfielder Aaron Niyonkuru benefitted from an excellent build-up, heading a Flynn Goodman cross into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
The goal sparked a response from Olympic, who created several opportunities in search of an equaliser. But the visitors were unable to find the finishing touch, heading into the break trailing.
The second half opened the game up, with both sides enjoying periods of attacking momentum. Olympic found some inroads on the transition but struggled to produce a clean finish when it mattered most.
After threatening on several occasions, Goodman sealed the result in the 74th minute. A quick transition from Jarrod McKechnie released the striker into space, and that was all the opportunity he needed, weaving past two defenders and goalkeeper George Stephens to secure the win.
The r result sees Edgeworth reclaim fifth place from Cooks Hill United, with their fourth consecutive victory moving them level on points with fourth-placed Belmont Swansea United. With two catch-up fixtures still to come, the side is well positioned to push for a top-two finish.
They will play BelSwans on Sunday in their round 18 catch-up game. While Olympic, who will likely need just one more win to secure their NPL NNSW position next year, will have a weekend off during the Men’s State Cup, returning to Darling Street Oval to host Valentine in round 21.
Kahibah FC 3-1 Belmont Swansea United
The final match of the weekend on Sunday saw a contender for one of the most important wins in Kahibah FC’s history, as the Rams stunned Belmont Swansea United 3-1 at Fred Wright Oval.
The visitors started with intent after their loss to Olympic, looking to pin the Rams in their own half and force a defensive error, but the Rams adapted well, their experienced heads in Robbie Turnbull proving especially valuable.
In the ninth minute, a Jackson Burston cross was misjudged by BelSwans inside their own box, allowing Billy Eick to pounce on the loose ball and produce a brilliant finish to give his side an early lead.
The opener lifted the home supporters as BelSwans continued to threaten going forward but struggled to find the target.
The Rams extended their lead in the 37th minute, as a launch from deep saw Eick return the favour to his striker, producing a brilliant lob over the BelSwans defensive line to set Burston up.
The 2-0 lead would last less than two minutes, however, as BelSwans finally found their breakthrough after threatening throughout the half. A corner fell kindly for defender Chris Fayers, whose strike found its way through a crowded box to give the visitors a lifeline heading into the break.
The match resumed in much the same fashion as the first half, with BelSwans looking to unleash their dangerous counterattack in search of an equaliser, while the Rams pushed to put the contest beyond doubt, their attack continuing to look threatening.
Ultimately, the Rams would restore their two-goal cushion in the 62nd minute. An Eick strike was well blocked by goalkeeper Nathan Archbold, but the rebound fell perfectly for striker Daniel Byrne, who made no mistake from close range.
Despite BelSwans’ best efforts, the score remained unchanged at full-time. The result provides a crucial boost for Kahibah, lifting them three points clear of last-placed Charlestown. But the Rams remain in the relegation play-off position due to an inferior goal difference compared with Adamstown Rosebud.
Kahibah will have the week off during Men’s State Cup weekend before travelling to face Broadmeadow Magic in round 21, while BelSwans will look to snap a two-game losing streak in their round 18 catch-up game with Edgeworth Eagles on Sunday.
Weston Bears v Adamstown Rosebud
This match was rescheduled due to Weston's Hahn Australia Cup round of 32 clash against Melbourne City at Hunter City Motor Group Stadium on Sunday, where the Bears fell to a 3-0 defeat.
The fixture will now be played on Wednesday 12 August 2026.
