Adamstown Rosebud 2-0 Cooks Hill United

Adamstown Rosebud coach Chris Moylan was pleased that his side continued their resurgence on Friday night when they defeated Cooks Hill United 2-0 at Adamstown Oval.

Adamstown only managed two wins in 22 matches in their 2024 campaign, but they have already surpassed that this season after bringing up their third victory in six games.

The two sides went into the break locked at 0-0 in the opening game of the round after chances were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes.

The Rosebud’s captain and leading goal-scorer Dino Fajkovic had come closest when he stormed into the box and dragged a shot just wide in the 32nd minute.

Fajkovic put the hosts ahead 10 minutes into the second stanza when he drove a free kick under the wall that was too powerful for the away side’s keeper Daniel Eisenhauer.

Nicolas Gismero made it 2-0 in the 65th minute with a cracking strike into the bottom-left corner to mark his first start of the season in style.

Not for the first time this year, that goal was created by a swift counterattack that started with a strong tackle from defender Michael Byrnes in the defensive third.

Cooks Hill worked hard to pull a goal back and give themselves a chance to earn a point but they were unable to as Adamstown prevailed 2-0.

Moylan was impressed with the way his men executed their game plan.

“We played well. We did exactly what we wanted to do,” Moylan said.

“There was plenty of energy and intensity and it was a good bounce back from the week before (a 4-0 loss against Edgeworth).

“The boys executed our game plan really well.”

Rosebud remains sixth on the table after Friday night’s win but has narrowed the gap between themselves and the top five from four points to one. They are back in action this Friday night when they meet league leaders Broadmeadow Magic away from home at Magic Park.

It is now back to the drawing board for Cooks Hill as Chris Zoricich’s men failed to fire for a second week in a row and only managed to create three shots on goal. They are seventh on the table and will travel to Alder Park in round seven to challenge New Lambton FC.

Broadmeadow Magic 2-1 Newcastle Olympic

Broadmeadow Magic extended their winning streak to five matches when they defeated Newcastle Olympic 2-1 in the red and blue derby at Magic Park on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts were eager to extend their stay at the top of the table and they got off to a dream start when James Cresnar opened the scoring in the second minute.

The Magic midfielder picked the pocked of Adam Zervas 10 metres inside his own half and played a pass to Ezra Palombini before charging up-field, got the ball back off his teammate and drove a shot from a tight angle through the legs of Olympic keeper Adam Pearce.

The score remained 1-0 at the half-time break after Broadmeadow’s keeper Lewis Alvarez made several saves to keep his side ahead, but Olympic finally converted one of their chances in the 51st minute when Jared Muller stormed onto a chipped Nathan Toby cross and drove a volleyed shot into the back of the net.

The visitors almost took the lead two minutes later but the score remained 1-1 after a curling Kale Bradbery strike from distance rebounded away off the post.

Olympic continued to create chances and looked likely to be the next to score, but they failed to convert.

Magic made them pay in the 72nd minute when Jack Simmons put the hosts back in front after being left unmarked in the box after a quick free kick that caught the opposition defence off guard.

Broadmeadow held Olympic out during the final 20 minutes to secure a 2-1 victory.

Magic temporarily went four points clear at the top of the table following the win before second-placed Edgeworth got up later in the afternoon to bring the gap back to one point.

Jim Cresnar’s men are at home again this Friday night when they host fellow round six winners Adamstown Rosebud.

Olympic are away for a fourth round in a row when they travel to Arthur Edden Oval on Saturday afternoon to challenge Lambton.

Valentine FC 1-7 Edgeworth Eagles

A rampaging Edgeworth Eagles continued their unbeaten start to the 2025 campaign when they demolished Valentine FC 7-1 at Croudace Bay Complex on Sunday evening.

The visitors went into the break with a 1-0 lead after midfielder Jaylen Rodwell had broken the deadlock in the 40th minute.

The floodgates then opened in the second stanza as the Eagles netted six more before the hosts found a late consolation goal.

The Edgeworth men doubled their lead just 75 seconds after play had restarted with an eye-catching free kick move straight off the training paddock that led to defender Xander Woweries scoring from just inches out.

Ryan Feutz set that goal up with a squared cross and the striker then scored himself less than two minutes later with a curling and dipping goal of the season contender from distance.

Rodwell made it 4-0 in the 52nd minute with his second goal of the game, which was a cracker strike from outside the penalty area.

A clinical finish from close range saw Joe Melmeth make it 5-0 just after the hour mark.

Feutz then produced some razzle-dazzle just outside the penalty area in the 77th minute as he beat several Valentine defenders before picking out the bottom-left corner to extend the lead to six.

Valentine’s day went from bad to worse three minutes later when Cale Graham was sent off after being booked for a second time, and Melmeth added a seventh for the Eagles with another clinical finish in injury time.

The hosts finally got on the scoresheet three minutes into injury time through Cooper Fitchett to make the final score 7-1.

Edgeworth’s fourth win of the campaign saw them remain in second place on the table, just a point behind fellow round six winners Broadmeadow.

The Eagles will travel away again this Sunday when they meet Maitland at Cooks Square Park.

Valentine dropped from eighth to 10th after their drubbing and will look to bounce back this Saturday night when they host Charlestown Azzurri.
