Northern NSW Football is delighted to announce the naming of the Joey Peters Medal to recognise the player of the match in the NPL Women’s NNSW first grade grand final.
The Joey Peters Medal will be awarded to the best player on the pitch in the NPL Women’s NNSW first grade grand final in honour of the Matildas centurion and NNSWF Women’s Premier League veteran.
Peters played 110 games for Australia during a 13-year career including trips to the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1999, 2003 and 2007. She made her debut against New Zealand in 1996 and scored 28 times for the Matildas.
In the NNSWF WPL, Peters played for Valentine FC, Merewether United and Mid Coast FC, bringing her talents and experience to the local league.
She was named the 2009 Australian Women’s Footballer of the Year and selected in Football Australia's Hall of Fame 2000s Team of the Decade. Peters was also inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions in 2023.
Peters said she was honoured to have the NPL Women’s NNSW first grade grand final Player of the Match award named after her.
“It is pretty special to be able to be recognised for my achievements,” Peters said.
“It means a lot that I can share this with my family.
“To be able to try and boost the local league was something that I really wanted to do as a way to give back.
“To see the competition transition into the NPL Women’s NNSW is great for the local game and it is fantastic to see so much young talent coming through the region.”
Peters will be at the NPL Women’s NNSW grand final on Sunday to present the medal to the inaugural winner.
Peters will choose the player of the match in the NPL Women’s NNSW first grade grand final along with NNSWF Technical Director Ryan Doidge.
“Joey was a pioneer of football in our region, shining on the national and international stage,” Northern NSW Football CEO Peter Haynes said.
“We are thrilled to have her name associated with such a prestigious award at one of the biggest days on NNSWF’s calendar each year.
"This is about us continuing to be equitable and recognise the significant contribution women have made and are making to the game. We have done this in other areas recently as well with the naming of the Emily van Egmond Medal for the NPL Women's NNSW Player of the Year as well as equal prize money and trophies for the NPL Men's and Women's NNSW competitions."
Premiers Newcastle Olympic face Charlestown Azzurri in the NPL Women’s NNSW first grade grand final at Darling Street Oval on Sunday.
Kick-off is at 5pm.
