Football is back and better than ever in 2025. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran like Coffs City United’s Jordan Maddalena or a beginner, there is a club and team for everyone.
Maddalena began playing football at an early age before quickly rising through the ranks to a leadership position in senior football.
“I started kicking a ball when I was four or five years old,” Maddalena said.
“I went through the Skills Acquisition Program from the ages of 11 to 14 which was really good. The skills that I learnt there when I was younger has really helped me and I have carried them into my senior football.
“I eventually joined Coffs City United FC in 2018 and was in the under-16s girls teams. I played junior football for about two years before I stepped up into the women’s team.
“After two or three years in the women’s team, I was appointed vice-captain and then later captain. I love it. I feel like being the eldest child. It is second nature to me to lead and look after others.”
The 22-year-old spent a large part of her playing career in defence but made the switch in position to the other end of the pitch in recent seasons.
"Currently I am a striker and also a winger. I came from a centre-back role,” Maddalena said.
“I have been a defender all the way into seniors and then we got a new coach who looked at me and told me I was an attacker. I have always been fast so the speed really helps.”
Maddalena said that football was a great way to prioritise fun, fitness and time away from commitments and believed that football had transformed her life on and off the pitch. She looked forward to another season with her team.
“The best thing about playing is the relationships and friendships that you make. I would feel lost without it and it feels like home,” Maddalena said.
“Our current team has been the same group of players for the past few years and is made up of a lot of young girls who are transitioning into senior football. We have grown a lot as the girls have gotten a bit older. I think this year we will be really dangerous.”
With registrations for the 2025 season now open, Maddalena encouraged everyone to sign up to play and hoped to continue her football career for many years to come.
“I would just say back yourself. You never know unless you give it a go and put the effort in,” Maddalena said.
“It doesn’t matter if you are not the most skilled person. Give it a try and you will likely really enjoy it.
“I want to keep playing as long as I can get fulfillment out of it.”
