Race for Promotion/Relegation: Kotara battle Uni for top spot, while Croudace Bay lead the charge

The 2025 Zone Football League season is in full swing with the return of promotion and relegation and the historic connection of the football pyramid to make it one of the most anticipated seasons in memory.

The Zone Football League, including the Zone League One, Zone League Two and Zone League three competitions, is administered by the Newcastle Football, Macquarie Football and Hunter Valley Football member zones.

NNSWF and the three member zones announced in that the men’s Hunter football pyramid would be connected from NPL Men’s NNSW and HIT106.9 Northern League One competitions down to Zone League One, Two and Three, with the return of promotion and relegation from 2024.

Zone Football League One

The race for promotion is heating up for Zone League One teams, with the 2025 premiers automatically promoted to the HIT106.9 Northern League One competition in 2026.

Kotara South FC sits at the top of the table one point clear of University of Newcastle FC in second position (12 points). Mayfield United SFC sit third but are locked on 10 points with fourth placed Newcastle Croatia FC and have Newcastle Suns hot on their trail with nine points. But with some teams having games in hand, the quest for the top spot is still open.

Hamilton Azzurri have slipped to the bottom of the table with zero points and trail Westlakes Wildcats and newly promoted Stockton Sharks by three points.

Zone Football League Two

Zone League Two’s competition has started fiercely, with multiple teams vying to be promoted into Zone League One at the end of the season.

Croudace Bay FC has made the strongest push for promotion, as they sit at the top of the table with 15 points.

North United Wolves, Bolwarra Lorn JSC, Cooks Hill United and Lambton Jaffas JFC are not far behind and will continue to fight for the top spot.

Mayfield United Junior SFC sits at the bottom of the table on zero points and is at risk of relegation, with South Maitland FC and Minmi only three points ahead.

Zone Football League Three

All 11 Zone League Three teams are pushing for the chance to finish at the top of the table and be promoted in 2026.

Greta Branxton FC is at the top of the table with 13 points after five rounds and is three points clear of Barnsley United FC in second. Kurri Kurri FC is not far behind on nine points with a three-point gap to Southern Lakes United FC, Merewether United FC and Bellbird FC, who are all on six points.

Fletcher FC find themselves at the foot of the table with one point, with Charlestown FC and Garden Suburb FC two points ahead.

NPL Men's NNSW

After nine rounds of the NPL Men’s competition, New Lambton FC, Valentine FC, Maitland FC and Belmont Swansea are most at risk of relegation. New Lambton has two points, while Valentine, Maitland and Belmont have eight points each.

The team that comes last in NPL will be relegated to HIT106.9 Northern League One in 2026, while the team that finishes 11th must survive the Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs to feature in the NPL next season.

HIT106.9 Northern League One

After six rounds of HIT106.9 Northern League One, Toronto Awaba FC have taken an early lead in the competition, five points clear at the top of the table and are favourites for the premiership and automatic promotion.

At this stage of the season, Kahibah FC, Singleton Strikers and Lake Macquarie City FC are in line to be a part of the promotion play-offs.

Wallsend FC, Thornton Redbacks and South Cardiff are most at risk of relegation. Wallsend and Thornton each have four points while South Cardiff has five points.

The team that finishes 11th in NPL Men’s NNSW will join the teams that finish second, third and fourth in HIT106.9 Northern League One in a promotion/relegation play-off series to determine the 12th team in NPL Men’s NNSW in 2026.

From 2025, the team that finishes 10th will be relegated to Zone Football League One.
