Everyone at Northern NSW Football was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former Newcastle Football CEO Russell Henry on Wednesday following a brave battle with illness.
Russell’s dedication to community football for more than 40 years has left an indelible mark on many lives.
His roles as a player, coach, committee member and administrator, especially at South Wallsend Junior Football Club, where he earned life membership, demonstrated his unwavering commitment to community football.
Russell’s leadership extended beyond the club level, with his service as a director of Newcastle Port Stephens Soccer Association and later as the CEO of Newcastle Football, a role he held for 16 years. His efforts in establishing the Zone Football League and numerous other achievements reflect his passion and vision for our game.
NNSWF recognised Russell’s remarkable contribution to community football and Newcastle Football community clubs last year when he became the recipient of the 2023 Bill Turner Award for Services to Football. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Russell’s wife, Maree, his children Adam, Mitchell and Ashleigh and his beloved grandchildren. May you find comfort in the many cherished memories and the enduring impact Russell had on our football community.
