Walking Football strengthens community ties at Tea Gardens SC

Tea Gardens SC has found an unexpected source of growth through Walking Football, with the program attracting new players, volunteers and community members since its launch in 2025.

Club stalwart Shayne Reynolds introduced Walking Football to Tea Gardens SC last year and the program has quickly become a valuable part of the club’s community focus.

The club now runs winter and twilight seasons with strong player participation driving the program’s return in 2026.

Reynolds, who served as the club’s original president more than 30 years ago, remains heavily involved with Tea Gardens SC. He mentors the current committee, helps run the gameday barbecue and continues to lead the Walking Football initiative for older members of the community.

He said the program had delivered significant benefits beyond the pitch.

“It’s been good to the club because it has introduced a whole new demographic to the club,” Reynolds said.

Walking Football has encouraged many senior participants to take on volunteer roles including refereeing, coaching, committee work and assisting with matchday operations.

One of those participants is George Cassin, who has been involved with Tea Gardens SC since 2000. Cassin joined the Walking Football program in 2025 and continues to support the club through coaching and training across MiniRoos, junior and senior teams.

Cassin said the program continued to grow each year as more players become involved with the club.

For Reynolds, the social connection created through Walking Football had become one of its greatest strengths.

“It’s got so many benefits. It’s got companionship, friendship, it’s exercise and it’s just really good fun,” Reynolds said.

The program has also helped reconnect experienced football people with the club. Tea Gardens SC has gained access to skilled coaches, club maintenance support and a more engaged community network through the involvement of Walking Football participants.

As participation continues to increase, the club has seen stronger links form between generations, with older members sharing their knowledge and experience with younger players and families.
