Lambton Jaffas FC 3-2 Cooks Hill
Five goals, two red cards and a late winner headlined the only game to go ahead in round 10 as Lambton Jaffas scored a 3-2 victory against Cooks Hill United.
Rain wreaked havoc across the weekend and washed five of the six games out but Arthur Edden Oval stood strong and gave fans one entertaining match to enjoy.
Lambton’s Riley Taylor and Cooks Hill’s Josh Benson threatened early but the score remained 0-0 on the half-hour mark as the two sides’ defences stood strong.
Taylor eventually broke the deadlock in the 37th minute after the winger was released out wide down the left by Jimmy Oates and left Cooks Hill defender Jye Bailey on the grass as he turned sharply back inside before curling a pinpoint strike into the bottom right corner.
Cooks Hill entered the half-time break trailing 1-0 but managed to level it up just five minutes into the second stanza when Kai Bradley stormed onto a Matt Berrigan cutback and buried a strike from close range.
The game came to life in the 65th minute when Lambton’s Matt Cahill and Cooks Hill’s Liam Wilson each scored cracking strikes from distance within a minute of one another as the score became 2-2, and it remained that way when the 80th minute ticked over.
It was the Jaffas that kicked back in front the third time in the match when Cooks Hill failed to clear an Oates cross and Cahill pounced to slot the loose ball into the back of the net in the 83rd minute and this time the visitors were unable to equalise as Lambton held on to win 3-2.
The two sides also finished the match with 10 men after Lambton’s Pat Bond and Cooks Hill’s Xavier Williams were red-carded late after tussling on the ground following a tackle.
The result saw the two sides switch places on the table as the Jaffas climbed from seventh to sixth. David Tanchevski’s men are now just one point outside the top five and they will be looking get themselves up into it when they take on Maitland FC at Cooks Square Park this Saturday.
Cooks Hill is yet to win back-to-back league matches this season and will go back to the drawing board this Saturday when they host Broadmeadow Magic at Fearnley Dawes Athletics Field.
