Referee Profile: Mike King

Whether you are a fresh face or a seasoned veteran like Mike King, it is easy to referee in season 2025.

King has been a referee in the Hunter region across community and Zone Football League competitions for Northern NSW Football and Newcastle Football for 18 years.

He fell into refereeing after putting his hand up when his club needed one and has not looked back since.

“I was still playing at the age of 40 and there were times where we didn’t have a referee and someone had to do it,” King said.

“I stuck the hand up. I didn’t enjoy it at first and then thought I would enjoy it more if I knew what I was doing. I wanted to be in football no matter what.

“I just love football. I was too slow and lacking in talent to do much as a player.

“This year will be season number 18 for me.

“I have been refereeing in the same competition for a long time and know all of the players. It is nice to see them each week.

“I started in the first 11 years refereeing in community football and then came across to Zone League in 2019.

“My only regret is not doing it years before.”

There are many reasons to become a referee as it is a way to earn extra money, build leadership and teamwork skills and give back to the game you love.

For King, it is a great way to stay connected with football while staying fit and active.

“One of the best parts about refereeing is that I get to see good quality football every single weekend up close,” King said.

“Especially among the Zone League referees, there is a sense of community.

“I will do the three games each week where I get to run around, keep fit and get paid for doing it.

“I think one of the biggest recruitment opportunities is the late 20s and early 30s players who love the game and are looking for an opportunity to stay involved.”

King said that refereeing has increased his knowledge of the game and encouraged current players to pick up the whistle for the 2025 season.

“I learnt more about the laws of the game than I did in 35 years of playing,” King said.

“I think we should be recruiting 20 to 30-year-old players who still want to stay involved in football.

“If you don’t like the standards of refereeing then, okay. Join us.”
