Season like no other in the Clarence

IT’S been a season like no other in recent memory for a number of Clarence teams.

The inclement weather and downpour seen earlier in the year meant a number of grounds were unavailable until recently, resulting in numerous fixtures having to be postponed.

But now a number of these fixtures are being played in catch up games across the Clarence Valley, as teams bank up games in what is starting to resemble a normal season after so many games were lost earlier in the year.

The rains that brought the floods in February and the subsequent three months of non-stop rain meant that most of the region’s fields were unplayable.

This included South Services Gunners Soccer Club’s home ground of Rushforth Park, which returned to action in June when it hosted under 15s and under 16s Friday night fixtures.

The Westlawn Tigers have also resumed hosting duties, with Barnier Park hosting its first games of the season last month.

Other Clarence clubs have accommodated those whose grounds have been out of action this season, slotting them in to time slots where available.

Ulmarra has also hosted junior matches this year, as South Services Gunners juniors (8s-11s) played their first games of the season in late May.

Clarence community seasons continue this weekend as teams try to book all important finals spots.

The Clarence Valley community seasons are set to finish on Friday, 16 September, and Saturday, 17 September.

The Clarence Valley community grand finals will be held on Friday, 21 October (15s and 16s), and on Saturday, 22 October (youth and senior) at the Yamba Sports Complex.
