Summer Football will return across the northern NSW region for 2024-25.
Summer Football provides players and clubs with the opportunity to continue to play their favourite sport during the spring and summer months.
Summer Football incorporates a revised format of the game with either a competitive or social playing environment.
Club Summer Football competitions can run for a maximum of 20 weeks, commencing no earlier than 1 October 2024 and concluding by 1 March 2025.
“Hosting a Summer Football program is one way progressive football clubs can provide more people with opportunities to play more football,” Northern NSW Football Club Support and Development Officer Brett Hodgekiss said.
“It’s a great way for clubs to keep current players engaged as well as attract other players from your area. The program will also bring revenue in for clubs during the off-season.”
Weston Junior FC will run another Summer Football program this year after their first program in 2023/24 was a huge success.
“We ended up having to run our program across two nights and turning people away because of so much interest,” Weston JFC president Samantha Tama said.
“We had under-8s all the way through to all age men’s, women’s and mixed competitions.
“We attracted a lot of people from surrounding areas.”
Tama said that there were countless benefits of the club hosting a Summer Football program that transcend beyond football.
“One of the biggest benefits is that it makes the transition into pre-season a lot easier and keeps players motivated,” Tama said.
“Summer Football helped us to retain players in winter and it made the winter football season a lot more community focused.
“Everyone is just having fun. We don’t run it for medals or trophies and everyone has a ball.
“We have mums and dads playing who have kids at the club and have never played before.
“The atmosphere is electric and constantly buzzing.
“I think every club should run a Summer Football program.”
