ZONE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Hunter Region has such a rich history of Club football stretching back as far as 1884.

Covering almost 33,000 square kilometres, across more than 10 Local Government Areas, football clubs are scattered across the region, all with a story to tell and a history to create.

From Minmi (1884), at the western edge of the now booming Western corridor, to Kurri Kurri (1904), in Mining country in the Hunter, Merewether Advance, (1894), in the City and Charlestown Juniors (1900), in Lake Macquarie, Club football has existed and thrived across varying competitions and numerous names representing 1st Division down to 6th Division.

Graded Interdistrict competitions have survived alongside the 2 Premier Divisions of local Northern NSW Football for decades, with promotion and relegation reintroduced in 2024 from top to bottom for the first time in more than 20 years.

Comprising 35 Clubs in 2025, across 5 Divisions, on top of the Premier Clubs and Community models, there is no other football code, no other sport, that has the breadth and reach of the beautiful game, the world’s game.

With the growing number of girls joining Clubs at record numbers and developing competitions at interdistrict level across the broader Hunter Region, plans are now in advance discussions to create a Women’s Zone Football League to sit between the NPLW Premier Competition and community models.

Pathways are created for young players to follow, allowing for all levels of development, vibrant diverse Clubs are encouraged and they grow off the back of their local communities and rivalries are either born or chapters are added.
